The titular lair in this product consists of an “audience chamber” connected to a warren of tunnels. One cavern holds signs of the dragon’s hoard, in the form of a scattering of gold coins. Otherwise, decorations are pretty sparse. The amount of lava on the map puts me in mind of a red dragon, but the product doesn’t include any key, descriptions, or suggestions.

Sometimes I don't need a module, all I need is a good map. "The Dragon's Lair" is a good map. My kids love to play with minis and while I can scribble on graph paper, a good scale map for minis is more than I want to do. This product, plus some printer ink and little imagination became "The Lair of the Stinky Dragon" for my kids one rainy afternoon.

Give yourself some time to print, cut and put this together, but in the end it is worth it. I love the cutaway view of the dungeon to know what is where in three dimensions, after all the mins are.

I'll be honest here. I grabbed this one over all the others because it had lava in it.

As with the other maps of this series, the Dragon’s Lair comes with full color high res maps, 1” = 5’ scale maps for miniature use in both full color and printer friendly black and white, and Maptool files and objects for those who use virtual table top technologies.

The maps are clearly meant to house either a red dragon or other type who loves the heat of magma and does not mind the toxic fumes that normally arise from such. The map is gorgeous like all of Jonathan Robert’s other maps I have seen to date.

What I particularly like about this set is the cross-section view showing the relative height of the caverns. Sometimes this sort of thing gets forgotten in adventure game products. I am sure I am not the only one whose players ask the question, how high is the cavern, tunnel, room? If that information is not made available in the adventure or supplement the GM has to make that up on the fly sometimes. Here though what won’t happen, the cross-section is artfully done and even shows how the magma stream fills the lava lake in the main cavern, which is a very nice addition.

Also, the most essential pile of dragon’s gold is supplied. Is it a false patch to attract the unwary? I sure hope it is. But that is definitely up to the individual GM to decide. I rate this 5 of 5 stars for yet another excellent and useful map by Jonathan Roberts and the folks at Rite Publishing.

I must say that I found the map to be quite interesting. It has a good layout, a choice of color or grayscale, and the maps are highly detailed. There are two factors which detract from the product as a whole. The first one is minor. I would have greatly appreciated a single page map of the entire location with rooms number. A page where you could fill in the room descriptions would make a wonderful addition. What caused me to mark the product down to an average rating is the watermarking. This appears on every page right on top of every map tile. Because the maps go right to the edge, there is no room to go anywhere but on the map. This ruins the appearance of the map, which for me detracts from its usefulness. If the water mark were off the edge of the tiles it would make this a much more useful product. Overall, I can give this a 3 out of 5 rating. Nice product, but needs a little work.

I wanted to thank Stephen Miller for taking the time to post a review of this product. Unfortunatlly we have no control over where the watermark is placed on the product,, as the watermark is applied by One Book Shelf system automatically. I will point out we do include a single page of the map as an image and as 2 pdf pages in both color and greyscale, but due to the fact that we don't dictate to our customers how they will use this map we did not impose room numbers on them. The art is really good, as always with M.Roberts and it's a usefull tactical map. Just looking at it, ideas for encounters pop up like crazy. I was interested mostly by the MapTool version of the Map (see http://www.rptools.net) wich is great with moveable (and reusable) objects, lighting and vision blocking layer. I will definitively use it, though I would have liked a big red bad** dragon token to live in this lair ;) But I can easily find this one elsewhere. Finally, it's so not* expensive and spares some much time preparing a map like this one (wich would have been ten times uglier), I feel like stealing the author ;) (just kidding, don't sell the next one at 50 bucks because of this message !)
