Complete KOBOLD Guide to Game Design
Publisher: Kobold Press
by Txabier A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/24/2015 23:02:07

A great product, full of many interesting ideas and specialized knowledge offered by many of the industry's top talents, whose proven track record alone makes it a worthwhile read.

Everything that will help any aspiring professionals to better present their ideas is there. Whether it is pitching them, building more coherent and cohesive systems or come up with a print-worthy and publication ready products all on their own, should they decide to do so, you will most certainly find it here.

Do mind, though: this goes beyond "simple" adventure design in a snap. While you most certainly can use it as a great source for (greatly) improving your regular gaming, all of the information contained herein is aimed at helping you plan, produce and streamline your material, from vague idea all the way up to finished product.

I, for one, am using many of its finer points as "pointers" that help me focus my novel-writing, and most of its "hardcore" design rotes as unavoidable landmarks in the thorough and all-encompassing revision of a major game line I am working on at the moment....

So yes, you can say I find this 252 ebook, and absolute must in any designer/writer's library, and one that is well worth the admission price even if you don't find it at a sale price (which I lucky enough to do).

To put it simply and in as few words as possible: if you want to have an audience that is constantly pleased with your offerings, you should get this book and learn it by heart.

THRILLING TALES: Omnibus Edition
Publisher: Adamant Entertainment

Quite simple: this is the very best Pulp-inspired RPg on the market today. The engine is modified d20, but fine-tuned to the stunts and technology of the time and style. With lots of add-ons, sure, but this one really has everything you need to start a sound and fun campaign full of two-fisted action and .38 special reasoning.

I heartily recommend it for anyone seriously into Pulp, as it is one of the best researched tomes you will ever find.

Dungeon Crawl Classics #3: The Mysterious Tower
Publisher: Goodman Games
by Txabier A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/28/2010 11:10:19

Probably my favorite module in the great and prestigious long-running line of supplements, Th Mysterious Tower is a great old school-styled adventure that I have run with many of my groups for greqat effect and hours of enjoyment. While it 's aimed at low-levels, it can be easily scalable for Joseph made a well thought-out series of plans a nd encounters that can be easily adapted to siut your specific player groups.

While it's easy tu run, it's by no means straightforward, and with careful scheming of the DM's part it can easily keep the players on their toes and thinking their way out of increasing trouble.

Finally, I must admist that 3e wasn't my cup of tea, but the best thing with every Goodman Games module is that it can easily be adaptyed to suit your group's playing style or the system you've chose. So, yes, it will work--and marvellously so--with Pathfinder and be very easy to transplant into any of the newer Rune Quest settings... or go real old-school and use your AD&D or AD&D "nd Edition rules with it, with minimal hassle.

All in all, a solid, easy to read and use module from Goodman Games. I heartily recommend it.

After the Bomb® RPG
Publisher: Palladium Books
by Txabier A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/23/2009 14:49:23

First of all: While not a "typical" OEC (all high-res, crispy detail and text), it's a very good electronic reworking of scanned pages so you do not need to worry about it being blurry or unreadable. It holds the magic of the original Palladium printed books, so... You need not worrying about quality if you want to print it out.

I had the original book, tied to the four turtles games and loved it. Then moved and lost it (along with a boxful of other books, but anyway...). So knwoing that it woudl be remade into a stand alone products thrilled me to no end... Yet, the stores here never got to order it, and exchange rates and shipping charges went high enough to justify not getting it.

Until it was released in PDF form. I am really glad Palladium decided to try out this way of putting out its material for more people to acquire it, as much of its catalogue can finally be bought again.

As far as the book goes, it's self-contained and uses the Palladium System which is quite tweakable and direct, so the learning curve is not a steep one or overly esoteric to people with no prior role playing experience.

There are plenty of choices for players to customize their characters and for the GM to determined the level of technology that's generally available for them to go wild with. But , let's stop pretending: it's really the setting the one that sells you this little book.

The amount of world info is amazing, awe-inspiring and diverse, all nicely interspersed with gaming info, so the reading never gets dull. That 's you learn to play the game and get information on why and how the world works this way.

So as far as post-apocalyptic settings go... this one has to be one of the classics and desreves a place in any rpg enthusiat's ebook collection.

All in all a nice buy at a nice price for 220 pages of true game content!

THRILLING TALES - Pulp Villains: NAZIS
Publisher: Adamant Entertainment
by Txabier A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/23/2009 14:12:39

While basic in terms of historical information, it's holds its own as useful and game-specific tidbits to spice up your pulp campaigns.

It does well to point out that the "nazis being typical pulp villians" is a modern misconception, for they appeared as such near the end of the pulp era. Still, gives plenty of room for you to create a detailed campaign where your players have a go against these opponents in the pre and early war timeframes.

Used in conjunction with Zeppelin Adventures, you can have lots of hours of fun in a pre-WWII setting where Europe is in the brink of chaos, spies are everywhere and there's nothing a determined pilor/hero can't do to save his paramour, his reputation and the world, all at the same time.

The crunchy bits are the typical high-standard you can expect from Adamant Enetertainment and conforming well to the d20 usual fare. Still, there enough information in there to translate it to any system without having a nightmare pf a time doing so.

This is a nice addition to any pulp enthusiast's rpg collection. I recommend it heartily.

[RuneQuest] Strike Force 7
Publisher: Super Genius Games
by Txabier A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/22/2009 15:35:03

Well, as far as "fake" G.I. Joe goes, this is a great sourcebook with well-developed informations, althougth the extreme right wing stance, make it quite unpallatable for me in some parts. Still, you can't say it isn't true to its source and the "reaganomics" that sapwned it, although the dalliances with "bushian" attitudes towards "those making it easier for SKORPION to strike at us" (that is all those who oppose a rather shady government as pictured here, too) do take a lot away from the enjoyment, no matter how fictional.

But that's just differences in politics, and should it be put aside, this a is great source for a modern military (or paramilitary, if you are so inclined) campaign with all the trappings of a nice G.I. Joe comic or even one of the decent saturday morning cartoon plots, barring the bad animation, with all the necessary materials to make it run smoothly using the Rune Quest engine.

My only complain is that it should have a lot more artwork, given that the subject material is ripe for great character snapshots for their dossiers, and the tech intel on the team's and teh enemy's rides and toys.

I was almost sure I was going to find fake ID cards somewhere, and their absence was a bit of a downer.

Still, it 's 78 pages of quit nice info, great intel and lots of ideas to have great on-the.spot gaming sessions or well-thought out and developed campaigns.

All in all, a nice product.

LIKED: The well-rounded information provided.

DISLKED: The lack of artwork.

SATISFACTION: Quite satisfied.

Hunter: The Walking Dead

The scans are quite obscured in some parts, but not to the point or making anything other than the chapters titles unreadable. The information is perfect for the gamers who want to put some haunts and revenants into their hunts, but want them to more than just zombies to hack, shot and/or slap silly.

Great source material for antagonists, but it's even better for intriguing and disturbing allies.

It's free, so download it, read it, use it and have fun!

I gave 3 stars only because the scans could have been a lot better, one'd think. Other than that , it's a solid 4 stars for the quality of the information presented.

Highly recommended to any comicbook enthusiast that likes graphic storytelling.

Fading Suns Players Companion
Publisher: Ulisses Spiele
by Txabier A. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/11/2009 02:02:36

Well, Fading Suns is one of the best Space Opera settings out there, and this is a really useful tool for all the players wanting to find out more about this universe and wanting to make the most out of the experience.

The first section of the book offer the various points of views of the participants in the Universe, from Houses to Serfs, humans an Vorox, which is a great tool to get into the "mind" of each and use them towards creating a more defined in game persona... Nice way to keep creating a well-rounded character.

The second section deal with the tow groups that thrive in this universe: the Questing Knights and the Church Knights. All the esssentials are there, along with a few remarkable individuals. For those wondering, this is a very cruch-lite section.

The third chapter is all about what many enthusiasts call the "main powerplayers": the Religious Orders. History and structure for three such groups are covered in a concise way, and one that is crunchier than the one mentioned above, as this is where the main rites and powers, as well as new skills are presented.

The fourth section deals with guilds. And it's eight of them. Plenty of career oportunities for the players' characters and some very interesting ones... such as the Guild of Vagabonds.

Chapter five deals with the quite necessary and ever-present military. Great information about Orders of Battle, groups and even sects!, with their structure, elements and crunchy details.

6 is for Aliens. If you are into this game, and love roleplaying challanges, you are going to love the Shantor. Still great for anyone who likes the "typical atypical", the Gannok or the Hironem offer interesting opportunities in and of themselves. Finally, I believe that many will be charmed by the diversity of the Etyri--for the first time I found an Avian species that I really wanted to use more than just occasionally on my games. Then there's the Ascorbites, and the fantastic Oro'ym, races you will seeing a lot given the potential they have for GMs and players a lot.

Seven men came then, of these the seven all had change in them.

Mutants, mutations and mayhem. very good, crunchy section.

Section eight is all about rules. Damage, martial artes, firearms, fencing, traits, knacks, skills, psychic paths, the moolah, the chrome, the hardware, the rides... all you need to detail a character is here.

This rounds up the 211 pages of goodness you get from this book. A veritable source of great ideas, inspiration and game opportunities, this is one download you just know you don't want to miss. especially if you have the same luck I had and get it on sale (or as was my case, for free as part of an effort to promote the game system. Really, I was among the lucky and, while late, it's due: Thank you, very, very much, guys! You made a fan for life with this increadible game and this great book!)

P.S.: The splash pages by Bill Bridges are fantastic. Full of character, dramatic enough and certainly illustrative of the citizens of the Known Worlds' ways of life. I truly believe these should be all compiled into a portfolio, or better yet, made into miniatures.

MARS: The Roleplaying Game of Planetary Romance (d20 version)
Publisher: Adamant Entertainment
by Francisco J. B. C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/07/2009 19:42:29

I got this for the GM DAY sale... A complete steal for 240+ pages of well-know, well-loved material from various sources on one of the most enthralling settings and subgenres to ever appear on written form.

MARS works as very good d20 setting, as the system is fine-tuned to fit the overall atmosphere and feel of the subject matter, and even if you--like me--don't like/use the d20 system that much, the information presented here in a cohesive, entertaining and concise form, will let your imagination roam free and fuel your gaming sessions, and make for a great role playing experience.

MARS is a self-contained game. Every single thing you need to run a game is right here, for you to work with it. So yes, many of the skills and feats are here, again, but localized--where needed-- to the world you are about to enter. That means you don't need additional books to play or refer to while creating characters or running the game.

Then if you, like me, just can't refrain from adding a few thing to it, as it's d20 you can easily port your evil Illithids here to add to the mix of opponents the players' heroes will face over the course of their adventures in this beautiful, dying world setting.

Do yourselves a favour: Buy it. Especially if it is avialable at a sale price.

Adamant Entertainment has yet to dissapoint me with one of their releases, and quite frankly MARS is one of the best they've put out.

LIKED: The presentation, the quantity and quality of the information and it's adaptation to the d20 system.

DISLIKED: The relatively few illustrations. For such a grandiose setting and the sheer amount of source material, this could have had a few more of them pics!

QUALITY: Very, very good.

VALUE: A veritable steal taking into account the quality/price ratio!

SATISFACTION: Extremely satisfied.

FarScape Roleplaying Game

Date Added: 03/05/2009 13:07:26

A great buy due to the GM Day (horray for us, guys!), this is a nice d20 (DnD 3.0 players handbook required, mind you) take on the well-loved if short-lived series. The only problem I see with it is that it's a scan of the actual book, so that means it is a bit on the heavy side (95 or so Mb), and that the text is not that clear. There's also the issue about the layout using an unconventional two colum format that gets a bit hard to get used to, or for some other it might get a wee bit hard to read after a while.

All in all, the spirit of the series is captured and there's no need to buy anything to flesh out your campaign as all the relevant information is in there, presented in concise, organized and useful manner.

It would definitely be a five-star product if only the quality of the file could be improved, but if you had any interest in the series or like Space-Opera settings, this is a really good buy and almost as steal at the sales price.

LIKED: The quality of the informations.

DISLIKED: The overall quality of the scans. To a lesser degree, the unconventional page layout.

OVERALL: Satisfied with the product.

Tome of Horrors Revised
Publisher: Necromancer
by Javier B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/21/2007 17:39:12

Just for the sake of nostalgia, this is one book you need if you want many of the old favorites back in you 3.5 DnD game.

The layout is perfect making the most of the space and giving priority to the best and most challenging creatures. The book itself is massive and full of information for any GM worth his salt and who wants to give his player something different during a game session.

This book is one of the reasons why the advent of the electronic book format is a blessing in this age of revisions, updates and simply just too much books being put out by great many publishers.

I cannot praise it enough. It's a real steal for the price and those who dare open the Tome, will not be sorry about letting its Horror run wild.

Do yourself a favor: get it and put it to good use.

Liked: Everything, some of the artwork is really, really good an all of it is evocative.

Disliked: What's not to like?

Quality: Superb.

Value: Great price/usefulness ratio.
