Forbidden Kingdoms: Modern is a slimmer version of the full FK book. This one uses the D20 Modern rules to cover the heavy lifting and leaves the rest of the book to focus on what is just Forbidden Kingdoms. The Pulp Era is not one I spend a lot of time playing in, but it certainly tailor made for adventures. You have many of the advantages of a modern society and still have large areas of land that mysterious, unknown and ready for imagination. Forbidden Kingdoms (any version) is actually one of my more favorite Pulp era games. It is also the game that helped me see the value of D20 Modern. The background information covers the end of the Victorian age till WWII and has a great overview of history. Not perfect of course, but perfect for a game. If you like the Pulp era or any of the books that came out then, then this is a great game to have. I am using it for the history sections and the adventure hooks alone.

Only the classes are converted to d20 Modern. To run this, you'll probably want the original version too; still, ... a cheaper alternative to d20 Past or Thrilling Tales.

Love this setting! Offers three campaign models for play, PLUS is now in the D20 Modern rules! Like chocolate and peanut butter. I wasn't crazy about this product originally being in the 3.0 rules, but I loved the setting. Now if there were only a conversion for the fantastic sequel for FK, "Paris-the Spectral City".....

The D20 Modern rules just work better for anything not in a fantasy setting. You can play any pulp character in this setting. There is enough background in the three campaign models to go anywhere, do anything, and get that feeling of awe and wonder that the pulp era (about from the Wild West era to the Depression) evoked.

LIKED: see above

DISLIKED: nothing to really complain about.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Very Satisfied
Do not buy this product by itself. It is only 104 pages long and it is just a piece of the Master codex that is offered in the bundle. I fell for it thinking it was something New or different because it says MODERN on the cover. It is just the first few chapters of the babbage edition.

LIKED: it was not too big of a loss of money

DISLIKED: It is not stand alone and is only a small piece of the puzzle. I don't know why it was listed as a separate item.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Disappointed
Creator Reply:
The two books aren't supposed to be used together. Please look over the character classes and you'll notice that they're for use with the d20 Modern rules, instead of the stand-alone version of the "normal" version of FK.

Well, if you bought the Babbage edition here and know your way around the D20 Modern rules, this may not be the best purchase. I bought the non-d20 version and had read it through before this became available; I'd have to say this saves some time on conversion and adaption and is a good purchase only if you fall into the catagory mentioned in the opening sentence.

LIKED: Well written conversion of the previous rules.

DISLIKED: Redundant if you already have the previous edition and know d20 Modern well enough to do the work yourself.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
Translates the 8 Basic Classes from Forbidden Kingdoms into Advanced Classes for the d20 Modern rules.

LIKED: Class features were explained better, and presented in a more streamlined fashion.

DISLIKED: In addition to a translation of the Psychic to the d20 Modern rules set, it would also have been nice to see conversions of the Prestige Classes. Some class abilities are still not explained.

QUALITY: Very Good

VALUE: Satisfied
This is a nice trans;ation of the setting to d20 Modern.

LIKED: Glad to see it in d20 Modern, even though most of my players would be happier with the old product. It isnt necessary to own the original, if you want to get into FK. They provide the history from the original.

DISLIKED: They could have done an equipment list. They also could have given the Mental Mystic as an advanced class.

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
