A fun read - if you happen to like Torg... The narrative has its inconsistencies (as formerly smart major characters are depicted as utter cretins - but hey ! it's the Gaunt Man's point of view !) As far as Torg novels go, this one is probably one of the worst - and Torg Novels are not very good literature. Yet, it's got a solid game interest for Torg gamemasters. Besides, it depicts the early start of a villain we all love to hate. Information you'll find nowhere else.

Besides, come on, it's Torg, it's fun !

LIKED: Honestly it gave me tons of new ideas and directions for my own Torg campaign. If you want to extrapolate on the nature of Darkness Devices, it's as good a start as any. To the best of my knowledge, this is the only book that depicts the relationship between a High Lord and its Darkness Device.

DISLIKED: As I stated, the story has its inconsistencies : Uthorion is depicted as a complete fool, and honestly the scheming talents of Ayroa and the Gaunt Man are so poor that it would make Dr. Mobius laugh. Besides, all of a sudden, Kantovia is not Kurst's cosm name anymore but a name the Gaunt Man chose... Why is that ? Makes no sense, has little plot interest, is slightly overdone... Besides it contradicts the say Kurst was pictured in the initial trilogy... A fault in continuity ! (How much of a comics book fan am I ?)So nothing that bothered me this much...

QUALITY: Acceptable

VALUE: Satisfied
very good Torg novel. A little bit out of the range of the others (mysterious cairo, strange tales from the nile or so) as it deals with things prior to the possibility wars. Still very good.
