This adventure has some cool ideas, but man are there significant design problems. Uses exhaustion as a punishing mechanic and in ways that do not make sense - definitely not fun. I would quibble with some of challenge ratings of monsters, but that's easily remedied. The maps are cool, but if you print the maps out in black and white some of the doors are hard to see.

Having said all of that, I do not regret paying $3 for it. I needed a jungle temple for third tier PCs and it works for that purpose.

Just read it over carefully and be prepared to adjust traps and other bottlenecks significantly.

I ran this at MageCon last summer and ran it again recently. When I read it I was not sure about it - parts seem convoluted and poorly organized. However, in play it has gone quite well and even created a couple of memorablle encounters. It is a longer module, which was great for my sessions (2 convention slots). I would rate it a 5, but the work involved getting it ready did extend a bit beyond my normal prep for a module. Even so, I would recommend it. It ran exactly eight hours both times I ran it. Cheers (pogre)

This file is a complete mystery to me. The roof printed beautifully. The ground floor printed beautifully. The first floor was a mess. I have made numerous adjustments to the first layer printing, added supports, and tried lots of different settings. I just cannot get a decent print of the first floor. Sadly, although there are parts of this model that are well done, in the end, I cannot recommend this file.

Naturally, with an epic level adventure you (the DM) are going to have to customize this a bit. However, the core ideas of the module are great. We need a lot more epic level adventures and I applaud the author for taking this on. The set-up makes sense and the villain is memorable.

Very straight forward mini-delve, which is exactly what is promised. Great sidequest for a campaign or location to drop into your sandbox.

Ran this last night and my players really enjoyed it. I would not recommend it for groups that are going to fight through an encounter no matter what. There are elements of the adventure where retreat is the best option.

BareBones Fantasy Role Playing Game

This is a great buy. The game is very well designed and is a very complete system despite its brevity. Even though it is called barebones, that does not mean more work for the DM/GM. Everything you need to run a complete campaign is right in this little book.

I am running a Pathfinder campaign Rise of the Runelords while waiting for D&Dnext. That was the plan at least, but honestly, I think BBF will be our next game. Next might never be next...

I have been a fan of Blackdyrge (Blackdirge) for a long time. I waited with anticipation the release of this novel. The novel is a polishing of Blackdyrge's fine story hour on ENWorld. It's obvious the story has gone through a couple of edits and is much smoother than the original. The story is full of fascinating abyssal politics and action. I read it straight through upon purchase and I cannot wait for the next two sequels. <br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: Great writing - fun action - a story you cannot stop reading!<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: No Grummok!<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Excellent<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Satisfied<br>

Dungeon Crawl Classics #6: Temple of the Dragon Cult

Hey pogre here. Sad to say, but this is my least favorite of the DCCs I have purchased. The whole premise of following a wounded dragon back to its lair works until you discover there is a druid that is one of its minions - why isn't the dragon healed? Add that to the fact the PCs will be probably be in a rush to kill the dragon and there are SIGNIFICANT, high CR encounters blocking the way. I would be shocked if most parties do not require resting at least a couple of times in the adventure. I'm no Cooper, but their are also numerous errors in the monsters stats. I almost always only post playtest reviews, but this one is not getting playtested.<br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: There are a couple of cool encounters worth lifting - cannot justify the whole price of the module though. Does save it from a one-star rating though. <br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: See above - the premise does not work. Stat errors. <br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Disappointing<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Disappointed<br>

Dungeon Crawl Classics #17: Legacy of the Savage Kings

Make sure you have a northern area in your campaign world where a bog or swamp makes sense to fit this adventure in.<br><br> <b>LIKED</b>: The history is complete enough to provide motivations for most of the NPCs, but generic enough to fit into any standard fantasy world. The encounters are not amazingly imaginative but still a lot of fun.<br><br><b>DISLIKED</b>: Solid, but a few holes will need to be filled in by the DM. This is really no problem for DMs accustomed to fitting published modules into their campaigns. There are a couple of unique magic items each DM will have to weigh whether it will imbalance an individual campaign or not.<br><br><b>QUALITY</b>: Very Good<br><br><b>VALUE</b>: Very Satisfied<br>

Buy the Numbers
Publisher: S.T. Cooley Publishing
by Keith P. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 07/05/2004 00:00:00

This is very much a 1st impressions review, as I have not used the rules in play yet.

The idea behind "Buy the Numbers" is something that has intrigued me for a few years as a former Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay addict. I even toyed with making an incremental system based on blocks of 500 XP. Spencer Cooley has taken this idea and written a very solid product - far better than anything I could hash out.

Cooley rightly points out that the system could be abused by hardcore min/maxing players, but I think the new freedom it provides and incremental awards are worth it. I am a undecided if I will use it as a player option in my campaign, but I definitely will use it as a DM. For me, the system allows me to do something I have wanted to for a long time - kick PRCs right out the door. This is the DM tool I have been wanting.

I do not use a lot of sources outside of the core rules, but Cooley gives some excellent examples of how to integrate them. In fact, Appendix A is full of examples of how to create new "classes" or "careers" as I would call them using the rules.

The only thing that seems a bit clunky is the spellcasting stuff. I will be anxious to see how it works in game play, and I will try to remember to post my impressions over at ENWorld after I do.

This is an excellent value for $5.00 and if you are on the fence - I would say buy it. You will not be disappointed.

pogre
