An Orc Too Far beta test
Publisher: Nordic Weasel Games

Simple and fun rules for Fantasy battles, with a handful of miniatures on a small playing space (about 60 miniatures and a 60x60cm board with some terrain features are enough). Units are just 6 figures for infantry, 1 figure for characters, heroes and generals, 3 figures for mounted; works well with 28mm single based miniatures, and with multibased figures (1 base = 1 figure in the rules) but on a larger table, I think. Includes rules for war engines, monsters, personalities, unit special traits, and interesting features like unit formations, reactions and combined attacks. There are not rules for back / side attacks (that is a bit strange in my opinion) but these can easily worked out, same for Magic that in the rules are just a shooting ability. IGOUGO turn sequence, good solo playability, due to simplicity and random movement distance, good for campaign games, could even be used for historical (dark age / medieval). I wish that the beta version will become a full version one day. PS I just would have liked a quick reference sheet, even if the rules are so simple.

Useful addition to the rules, but only 2 pages long. I reccommend anyway to get it for the Magic and the other simple characters. Above all, get the Custom Armies supplement that has much more contents and allows you to make your own units for the game.

Chronicles of Blood - Solo War Game

Played a couple of games so far, this game is fantastic! Rules look like a simplified version of the (already simple) Kings of War fantasy rules, using polyhedral dice instead of "buckets of D6", and work (you got them in 5 minutes). Some mechanics do not seem "right" at first sight, but they must be seen in a solo wargame perspective. The enemy AI is also very simple and logical, regiments move towards the nearest enemy, unless they can apply a special rule (like Archery). In case of doubt I use common sense or roll a die. This and the random enemy deployment reflects well the idea of an evil, aggressive horde. I have still to try the Heroes of the Battlefield and I point out that there is another pdf, called Custom Armies, with point values and special rules for making your own units. On a side note, you can use whatever scale of miniatures and basing (I play with 6mm miniatures on a 60x60cm board, halving all distances) or paper counters.

Battleblade

The fantasy version of Laserblade sci-fi skirmish rules is nice but in my opinion, close combat and above all, ranged combat, are too deadly. This is good for a sci-fi skirmish set, where characters usually run for cover and close combat is relatively rare, but in a fantasy game, bows etc should be less deadly and hand to hand should be a bit more detailed. Anyway if you want a set of very simple rules, maybe for a campaign with multiple games linked, it can be the ideal set of rules. Some special abilities could probably used in the Laserblade rules too, and the Magic rules are a good add-on to the system. I give only 3 stars because I really think that the way combat is resolved could be improved.

Laserblade - First Edition

A little gem! Simple but fun D10 sci-fi skirmish rules for 5-10 miniatures each side, with character generation that allows you to play with every miniature in your collection, in every scale (I use 28mm with 4" range). Also easy to customize with house rules; adding characters features, weapons etc. with some adds-on I think they could work for light-hearted WW1-WW2, Pirates etc. Vehicle rules are missing but they can also be made up easily.
