Pulp Template (D20 Modern)

Pulp Character Templates is support for the D20 Modern line by Louis J Porter Jr Design, author unnoted. It is a five-page product (four after OGL) with a clean layout, though there is considerable white space on the final page of the product. The only art is the full color piece that makes up half the front page and seems to have little to do with the themes of the product.

Three templates are provided, one spiritual (Reincarnated Warrior) and two physical heritages (Hollow Earther and True Atlantian). The spiritual template can be applied through an appropriate ?awakening?, visiting an ancient battle field or such. The heritage feats can simply be ?discovered? as needed by the story. All have a level adjustment of one or two.

? Reincarnated Warrior, though it can be used (with some modification) for other characters who remember their ?past lives? it is designed for the Eternal Warrior who is fated to fight. A solid concept and set of abilities. Except that it gives a limited number of weapon proficiencies and then on the next line says that the warrior ?knows how to use every weapon ever designed to kill men,? very odd. ? Hollow Earther, from the secret lands inside the Earth. These brave savages are masters of nature but not of technology, viewing anything from the surface world with suspicion. This works well for natives, but what of those raised on the surface who discover their true heritage? Do they suddenly become distrustful and inept with technology (as applying this template would imply)? ? True Atlantian, from the sunken city, able to breathe water and survive in the chill depths of the sea. A solid job of writing a classic concept.

The templates of the ?product of secret Nazi eugenics experiments, while the worst villains in the campaigns might be tainted with the blood of serpentine monsters or Lovecraftian abominations from beyond space and time? promised in the product description, however, are not included here.

Pulp Templates is a good idea, hampered by poor execution. It is usable but not easily and it is not what was implied by the product description.

QUALITY: Disappointing

VALUE: Disappointed
