Quite possibly the most succinct combat options primer, and downright pretty to boot.

Grazilaxx's Guide to Ancestry
Publisher: Dungeon Masters Guild
by David B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 08/26/2021 16:11:54

I like Grazilaxx's Guide better than the "Customizing Your Origin" section in Tasha's Cauldron of Everything, which was essentially "swap around your stat bonuses and proficiencies until you like them" as that didn't address the underlying problem. Dwarves have access to a greater array of traits than a human ever will.

I like Grazilaxx's Guide better than Ancestry & Culture by Arcanist Press, because that simply allowed you to mix & match cultural traits and inborn talents. Ancestry & Culture sort-of addressed the issue by allowing you to swap cultural traits, so you could have an Elf raised by Orcs and gain some of their training. However an elf will still have access to a greater array of traits than a human ever will.

I like Grazilaxx's Guide better than Ancestry Awakened by Pirate Gonzalez Games. Ancestry Awakened took the ideas in Grazilaxx's Guide and shot it into high orbit. In my opinion they went a little too far, giving options for animated armor and gelatinous goo people.

I like Grazilaxx's Guide because it "levels the playing field" at character generation for 5e. True, it leads to some odd ducks: "Why would you want to play an Aarakocra without flight?" (As a DM, my response would be "Are you actually insisting on playing an Aarakocra in the first place? Really?") But it puts all ancestries on fairly equal footing, and that's important for me.

Wow, thank you for this amazing review... those are some pretty quality products to be compared to. I'm glad the balance of all the ancestries was a key point for you, as that was one thing that was important to me while designing the product. Thanks for using our products and for taking the time to tell us what you loved.

Expanded Wealth
Publisher: Pinnacle Entertainment
by David B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/11/2019 23:07:58

This is a quite good article at expanding the simplified Wealth rules presented in SWADE, still making it "light" enough for the Fast! Furious! Fun! philosophy of Savage Worlds. I really like the concept of "savings" too, as it gives players something to "bank" for a big-ticket item later.

My only gripe - this is a minor one - is tying dollar amounts to a game statistic, especially in modern settings. In Fantasy or SciFi settings, the economy and the purchasing power of a Gold Coin or Intergalactic Credit is largely in the GM's hands, so that's not much of an issue. But $100 in 1891 buys you a lot more than $100 in 1991, and in turn $100 will get you even less today. But that's something any modern-era game suffers from.

Thank you for the glowing review! I thought a lot about how to implement the Penalty Table, and I settled on the two most common Starting Funds ($500 or $1,000), but I tried to draw a clear relationship between Starting Funds and penalties so in games with different levels of starting funds players can reasonably extrapolate an appropriate table. If you’re playing in a certain Weird West setting and want to use Wealth, for example, I’d suggest drastically lowering the tiers for penalties (maybe a –0 roll for purchases up to $25, –1 up to $50, etc.), as well as adjusting the Core Rules suggestion for how much you can purchase without a roll—maybe 50¢ or $1 x the character’s Wealth Die, rather than the usual $10 x Wealth. Just like anything to do with game economy, tweak prices for whatever you feel is appropriate for your game world! Hope that helps with your nitpick, and happy gaming! :)

Trailer Park Shark Attack!
Publisher: Dog House Rules
by David B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 11/13/2018 23:03:11

I got this on a dare. No, seriously, a buddy of mine told me to drop everything, as Trailer Park Shark Attack! (TPSA!) was on the Deal of the Day.

I was surprised to find a well-polished homage to B-movie shark films, from Jaws to Sharknado to The Meg. Not only does the author present multiple main plotlines as to just why sharks of every variety are attacking this flooded trailer park, but they also include multiple side plots you can churn the waters with. And they provide extensive map tiles and paper miniatures for the sharks.

My only complaint - if you can call it a complaint - is while they provided minis for the sharks, the trailer park residents didn't get paper minis. Where am I to find two dozen paper minis of various rednecks? I'll figure it out, I'll probably just use stills from Ozark and/or The Trailer Park Boys. But still...

Hellfrost Map Sheets
Publisher: Triple Ace Games
by David B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/09/2018 22:12:46

Hoooooooly mackerel this map is huge. Like Skyrim-level, enormously, massively, mind-bogglingly huge.

Unlike most Savage Worlds settings, where the authors flesh out a "lite" framework which constitutes about 40 pages or so, and a plot point campaign & some savage tales, Triple Ace Games instead dived deep to create a super-rich setting that I dare say rivals the greats like Tolkien or GRRM. And where else but in Savage Worlds can you support 8 distinct magicial styles? (And that's if you don't seperately count each cleric for the two dozen gods in the pantheon. Well, maybe you can support 8 magic styles elegantly with FATE but I like SW's crunch-lite rules more.)

Where was I? Oh yes: this map. This beautifully illustrated, high-resolution, 45-page-plus-a-legend map. Clearly this was a labour of love, and does it ever show. Print it (or get it shipped to you), mount it on your wall, and prepare to marvel at the esquisite details of every trade route, mountain pass, forgotten ruin or flyspeck villiage. Every feature on the map is simply begging to attach the weight of history - either of your own devising, or that in the Atlas of the Frozen North & the Gazetteer.

This clearly is a monument, and it's oh-so very pretty.

Strap on a pair of boots, say a prayer to Freo the Voyager, and get yourself lost. May you find glory in the Fimbulvinter.

WINTERHAWK: Wizard's Tower
Publisher: Fat Dragon Games
by A customer [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/02/2016 21:24:33

I'm a big fan of "show, don't tell" when it comes to my tabletop games, and Fat Dragon has quickly become my go-to for their amazing paper models, and this one is the best I've made so far. I print it on my home printer on heavy weight cardstock for pennies per page, and then cut, score, fold, glue, cut, score, fold, glue... for about eight hours. (I make sure I kiss my partner and my stepson goodbye before I enter the Third Dimension.)

Every story in this five story tower is designed to fit snugly on top of the other, and can be removed for miniatures play. Before you print, you can make changes to the final design using PDF layers: Do you want orange windows, or red? Do you want a stone floor, or are you partial to a blue marble checkerboard pattern? The final result is sturdy and impressive.

My only complant? The publisher directs you to glue on the inside flaps of itty bitty boxes, which is pain in the butt, though a minor one.

Awesome work.

Apocalypse Prevention, Inc. - Savage Worlds Edition
Publisher: Third Eye Games
by David B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 10/10/2015 09:02:15

A clever pastiche of Angel, Blade, HP Lovecraft, and above all else, Men In Black, it's eldritch horror done with tongue in cheek. Demons walk among us but you can't notice the weird fish-man demon if he's wearing a trenchcoat and a floppy hat. Occult shops sell real actual items of power, to those in the know. Back alley doctors install cybernetic parts on human and demon alike. And regulating all of them is a shadowy mega-corporation and its agents in black suits, responsible for stopping a dozen apocalypses so far.

The book is largely black text on white, with a few comic art pieces here and there - definetly printer-friendly.

While the concept is wonderful, and the chapters on cybernetics and magic are really good, but the last couple of chapters, describing API's operations, it tends to drag a bit. There's no adventure generator, custom Savage Tales, or sample antagonists to give GMs a boost when it comes to prep time. This is a conversion from their own in-house game system to Savage Worlds, and there's a few places where the editor failed to notice a mechanic from the previous system slipped through (what's a Passion Roll?).

Stellar product otherwise. Glad I picked it up during Savage September!
