Campaign 1: Secrets of the Ancients
Publisher: Mongoose
by Jim C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 06/12/2010 20:06:29
With this freebie, I think Mongoose has come up with a really nice adventure format, combining the best of the old (a vast and detailed backdrop worked by many hands), the best of the '80s and '90s (lyrical writing and keen social speculation) and the best of the new (streamlined mechanics and practical aids to play). Editing and PDF production are clean and attractive. Could use more art and better-looking maps.

World data, as advertised, for a classic sector of space with some useful political summaries. Otherwise, pretty dry reading.

The story's as horrifically inspiring as you could ask for. I didn't think much of the drawing, though.

An impressive toolkit to put together a tightly integrated set of circumstances, based on detailed personalities but different each time, for players to investigate. Characters, worlds and customs in the background to the killing are all interesting beyond the obvious.

Well-realised planetary setting, with more complexities to the titular nomads and their dangerous prey than I had expected and a fun political mini-game.

Everytown - Getting the Goods

A pretty good extended challenge centering on other skills than physical combat, though it doesn't lack for physical danger and there's human opposition, too. It might take a bit of thought to justify the mystery hung around the central facts of the scenario.

There's not a lot to this - two small encounters (unmapped), some roleplaying, ally/opposition stats and four pregenerated characters, connecting the campaign background, town description, map and more substantial adventures presented in other products. The trade table, I suppose, is a useful idea. Really it doesn't stand on its own and will only show value as part of an investment in this game line.

Queen Of Crows
Publisher: FR Press
by Jim C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 05/04/2010 23:16:41
As described, this is an interesting format: a short story, together with a lot more information which, between the "Letter to the Reader" and early draft, provides a much stronger and more detailed context to the entity of the title. The story's worth a read in a general YA-fantasy sort of style. On a gaming site, I should mention that no game stats are included, but the extras easily provide the kind and quality of information a GM would need to derive stats for any chosen game system - so it's almost like a systemless game supplement in that regard.

Tripwire
Publisher: Mongoose
by Jim C. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/25/2010 04:24:34
This is an extended adventure (as you'd hope for the usual asking price) taking players to many or all of the worlds in one subsector, at the risk of, as the author puts it, a rather abrupt end early in the piece with the question "What does this have to do with us?" Some rough editing and the PDF is not bookmarked. Still, a qualified 4 stars, since with a little quick thinking to get past the logical soft spots, it presents plenty of good and varied material.

A good-looking format that should give a very clear idea of the layout of each place if printed at a decent size. Includes one or more interesting and useful adventure hooks / random events for most entries.

A couple of the images are blurred. Usage of space in some designs might raise doubts from knowledgeable players.

The Boarding House at Arkham Street
Publisher: Three Fourteen Games
by Jim C. [Verified Purchaser]

This is a creepy little scenario, written for (though it certainly doesn't require) a casual sort of pace over several sessions, with a copy of one of this publisher's maps as another reviewer mentioned. Although officially systemless, the suggested rules are most compatible with BRP (classic CoC). I don't know if I would go with the Alien reference, myself, but as the text makes clear, it's easily interchanged with something different.
