Investigator Weapons, volume 1
Publisher: Sixtystone Press
by Mysterious B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/26/2012 19:47:42

Newcomer press manned by old hands brings us a wonderful supplement on weapons of the Classic Cthulhu era - which means that it is excellent for any BRP game set in the 1920s/1930s. But, make no mistake this is not a mere Sears Roback catalogue of different firearms and explosives. There are all sorts of useful tidbits such as what penalties could be imposed for shooting in the dark or what might happen in a desert. All round, excellent supplement. Also included are bonus sheets allowing the Keeper to afix these to his/her screen without searching through. Completing the supplement is excellent index. Most amusing is the gun ads from different countries adding an extra degree of realism that Cthulhu supplements have been missing lately.

Keep up the excellent work Sixtystone Press and cannot wait to see future supplements.

21 Plots: Planetside
Publisher: Independence Games
by Mysterious B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 03/16/2012 09:15:00

In this short supplement Gypsy Knight Games goes again to producing excellent adventure hooks that are resolutely grounded in a stout Traveller feeling. The format is the consistent with previous 21 Plots, a small basic setup for the scenario then the Referee can choose one of the outcomes or roll 1D6 and wholly freeform it or put together a comprehensive “one shot” replete with maps, stats and whatnot. What makes these adventure seeds so Traveller is that they grounded in a down-to-earth and unclean future where people’s jobs may be in space, but, they still remain jobs – everyday smoes who have a possibility at becoming local heroes.

Ancient Trails, Witness to History

This is another exhilarating chapter in the Ancient Trails campaign arc for Terra Sol Games and expresses some of the best Traveller writing that I have seen in a long time. The truth of the matter is the fact this is free and can be used in a One-Two Shot makes it perfect for the aspiring Referee or seasoned one needing a quick adventure. Only rudimentary fluency with the Terra Sol (sub) sector is needed to playing this game thus making this the perfect generic Traveller adventure that can be plunked into any Traveller Universe. It is big on description i.e. role playing opportunities rather than roll playing that makes it also highly desirable even if you do not play Traveller but are looking for an excellent SF RPG.

Subsector Sourcebook 2: Franklin
Publisher: Independence Games

Another fine collection of worlds that puts another puzzle piece in place for this Alternative Traveller Universe. Filled lots of adventure hooks and interesting locales guaranteed to inspire any Referee when the brain rot sets in...and they need to come up with a ready made subsector for adventure. Once again, excellent art (with one exception noted below) dominates the work as does clear and entertaining writing. The book is significantly bigger than the previous one but still gives lots of excellent coverage of the numerous worlds in question - no real duds just familiar tropes gently spoofed or retreaded upon. However, if there is one criticism is the repeated use of the stock art for some of the worlds especially that of Saturn whose orbital tilt, colouration and prominent ring system is obvious that is Saturn - no matter what they call it. I would suggest putting it through different colour filters and changing the orbital tilt to make it less recognizable when the final print version appears. Otherwise, can hardly wait for the print.

21 Plots
Publisher: Independence Games
by Mysterious B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 01/09/2012 18:15:38

This early version shows a clear love of the game - unlike 1001 Patrons this book was written with the love of old Classic Traveller in mind - even though, it is not set in the Classic Imperium - there are no excesses each adventure hook is nicely balanced and provides an interesting segway for adventure that treats the players and referee as actors in a much larger drama just merely hinted at. The plots are believable and enjoyable. Cannot wait to see more from this company.

21 Plots Too

An excellent cover and excellent plot hooks that build upon the earlier book of adventure seeds (21 Plots) like its predecessor volume, it shows the authors really get Traveller and have no qualms about the love of the game. Very few plots are extravagant or unbelievable, even nicer is that these plot hooks are hooked up with worlds with the Cascadia subsector (although a Referee can easily determine how do a setup without buying all those worlds or subsector book - just (s)he will have do more legwork). Excellent art round it all out.

This is nice book outlining all the Quick Worlds till the date of publication from a company that truly has broken the mold of generic worlds found in most Science Fiction tropes. True there are some worlds that are farcical and others that are deadly serious - both have their place in this subsector sourcebook. This is one key to a larger puzzle that Gypsy Knight Games is slowly unveiling as part of their ATU. It has excellent production values and certainly worth the price - if there be any Referee would needs a subsector filled with interesting and interconnected worlds.

Six Guns Rescue Organizations
Publisher: Terra-Sol Games LLC
by Mysterious B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 12/06/2011 08:57:40

Traveller has long suffered from many gaps with Referees having to make do and create their own workarounds. One of those gaps is what is the future's equivalent of the Coast Guard. Part of you, might think the Scouts whereas, others, say Navy and still others COACC. But, as everything does revolve essentially around a profit, why not the business of saving lives?

In steps Terra-Sol Games with an excellent Six Guns Supplement that highlights different rescue organizations of the Twilight Sector (although, these can easily be adapted to any Traveller milieux). Some gear is thrown in for good measure. And, the Chargen for a typical rescue organization.

Lastly, TSG was good enough to throw in some details of their FTL system. While this is specific to their variant, still gives some thoughts for Referees who might be toying with leaving the OTU or at least expanding experimental technologies available to the OTU.

Netherell

Date Added: 10/13/2011 13:15:37

An excellent product that expands and builds upon the Twilight Sector by adding Fantasy as unexplained tech (psionics) to the equation. This supplement does a great job in plausibly adding more careers (rooted in Fantasy tropes) and depth the what is already shaping up to be the best Alternative Traveller Universe. The art is absolutely phenomenal and Mongoose (whose rules engine this game uses) should take heed, as Terra Sol Games (TSG) is now raising the bar for Traveller art and hire these guys. Furthermore, it takes Traveller where it has only lightly treaded before...realms of transhumanism and also cutting edge SF especially, if you love the angle of fantastical explanations rooted in science. If you liked TSG other Twilight Sector offerings - you are bound to love this one.

Six Guns Gauss Weapons
Publisher: Terra-Sol Games LLC
by Mysterious B. [Verified Purchaser]
Date Added: 04/11/2011 14:32:14

A gauss weapon uses electro-magnetic forces to throw a tiny needle shaped projectile at very high velocities into the target. This is not 26 pages of illustrations of different weapons and small statistical blocks – these are full-fledged descriptions of different classes of gauss weapons and their accompanying ammunition rounds. Complementing the illustrations is a chatty commentary that breaks some of the technical details into more enjoyable reading. This supplement would lend a hand in helping a player and referee flush out some of the particulars. Nevertheless, there is a kicker (and speaking as a Referee, a very nice one), not all of the equipment herein is necessarily “enhanced” than the non-specific versions. Without a doubt, a number of items have noteworthy negative aspects or are customized to a particular objective and poor for other applications. On the other hand, what they all have in common they are more appealing than the basic rulebook version.
