Mother of Monsters GM's Guide

Incredibly in-depth fleshing out of the world the author created. A must have for the DM who runs the Mother of Monsters campaign.

Stone Mother's Assault
by Mark A. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/20/2022 09:33:56

Highly recommended! This adventure has a good storyline and is set up in a nice big sandbox. They have to help a king find out who is betraying him, while uncovering a much larger plot along the way. There are classic monsters to fight, as well as some that were newly created just for this world. It is very well illustrated throughout, which is a nice plus.

Dungeon Archetypes (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/29/2022 01:11:03

An unusual collection of subclasses for D&D 5th Edition:

  • Close Quarters Fighter: Just like it sounds. This fills an interesting tactical niche, but the mechanics feel a little too focused on specific bonuses for 5E.
  • Oath of Discovery: A paladin dedicated to knowledge. A novel concept with some pretty solid abilities, and probably the best design in the product.
  • Under Stalker Ranger: Similar to the official Gloom Stalker, but less satisfying, mainly because (like the Close Quarters Fighter) it's too focused on finicky bonuses.
  • College of the Passage: A bard with the magical equivalent of drones at their disposal. A very odd design, especially for a bard; it feels a lot like someone's homebrew material.
  • Labyrinth Divine Domain: Basically a cleric optimized for dungeon exploration - the mechanics tie together but the theme is shaky. It also has a feature that has the same name as a ranger feature (Natural Explorer) but operates differently, which is asking for confusion.
  • Circle of Worked Stone: A sort of earth elemental druid with a grab-bag of themed abilities (including a copy of the dwarf's stonecunning feature). "Worked Stone" doesn't make one think of druids, however...
  • Oozemancer Bloodline: Another strange option, a sorcerer that can conjure a fungus that gives them the ability to summon oozes. It's distinctive, but probably too specialized for most campaigns.

These subclasses definitely aren't for everyone, and most of the designs could stand improvement, but there's no question that they stand out from the crowd!

Legendary Oracles
by Bryan M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/24/2022 08:22:31

This is a really great supplement - one of the best in the series. The oracle is a great class, but it tends to not get very many options other than new mysteries. This book changes that. Unlike a lot of Legendary's class books, there's no rewrite of the oracle class here, only a lot of new options for the oracle class. There are a handful of new mysteries here, but there is so much more. It starts with alternate class features, then adds new curses, burdens (a type of alternate curse), folklore mysteries (an alternate kind of mystery that comes with a pre-determined curse), a ton of archetypes for oracles as well as for a few other classes (including prestige classes), new spells, new mythic options, new character traits, an alternate racial trait for duskwalkers, new magic items... whew! Best of all, this new content is really solid, flavorful, and allows you to play an oracle in a lot of new ways.

tl;dr - A ton of options; pick this up to add some variety to your oracles.

Beasts of Legend: Fairy Tale Creatures (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 10/22/2022 05:17:00

A third-party collection of monsters for D&D 5th Edition, featuring a mix of new creatures as well as "legendary" versions of established D&D creatures. Each monster has a detailed writeup, with most having very substantive lore. The artwork is also top-notch. Highlight creatures include the bogeyman, frumious bandersnatch, and jabberwock.

Despite being a 5E product, it's not hard to tell that this was converted from Pathfinder; besides denser designs than most 5E creatures, there are other tells in rules and terminology. Mind, that wouldn't be a deal-breaker, but there's also a sloppiness at times that makes it obvious the production was rushed... including references to missing material (such as variant jabberwocks) and rules blatantly copied from other stat blocks (complete with the other monster's name!). The legendary versions of existing creatures are also disappointing, since the lore focuses on the default creature instead of the legendary version... which means most compete with official D&D versions, and a few awkwardly tell us about a creature with no stats in the book (such as leprechauns or snarks).

All in all, this is still a usable and good-looking product with some neat designs... but it could have been much better with more effort put in outside the conversion to 5E. (Originally posted on Goodreads)

The Baleful Coven (5E)
by Timothy B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 10/17/2022 08:23:41

Originally posted here: https://theotherside.timsbrannan.com/2022/10/100-days-of-halloween-baleful-coven-5e.html

Unlike the others I have reviewed so far this month I do not have a spot for this one figured out. So maybe something will come to me while I type.

The Baleful Coven (5E)

Print and PDF. 24 pages. Color cover and interior art.

For five to seven characters of 6th to 7th level.

It is described as bringing standard fantasy characters into contact with threats of the "Far East." Which is cool, to be honest. Not sure if it will fit into my game just yet, but I like the promise of it so far. It does have one of my favorite archetypes, the white-haired witch, and there is a coven made up of a hag and two warlocks.

I am going to pause here to note that this was originally a Pathfinder adventure. I bought the PDF of it a while back but I now notice it is gone from both DriveThru's and Paizo's websites. I mention this because I feel some of the fingerprints of Pathfinder, and in particular how they handled witches and hags, can be seen in the 5e version here. For example, while a warlock here, Masami Onishi is very much a "White Haired Witch" from Pathfinder. This is not a complaint mind you. Save in only I wish the Pathfinder version was still available. Granted it was released 10 years ago.

The bulk of the adventure takes place on the demi-plane of The Dream of Vengeful Reckoning. Ok, I do rather like that too. The adventure then becomes a search for how to leave this demi-plane. Naturally defeating this coven of "witches" is one of the ways to do it.

The adventure is actually rather well put together and I can see it being run over a long afternoon-evening or a could of smaller sessions. This is exactly what it was designed for. There are memorable NPCs which is the real hook for me.

So yeah a fun adventure with some great ideas.

Use with my War of the Witch Queens

There is a solid idea here, but not the one I think Legendary Games wants me to hook into. I mentioned the NPCs were memorable, and they are interesting, but you know what would be better? If I took three witches from three different adventures the characters had "defeated" and used them. I have seen enough movies this month where witches come back to some form of life to get vengeance on those who killed them. Set them up into a demi-plane, or for my purposes, a Liminal Plane, where the dead witches can get their vengeance on the still-living PCs.

This is for 6th to 7th level so it would need to be part of an earlier adventure. My top choices right now are Trilena (Rahasia), Llorona (The Witch of the Tarriswoods), Kyleth (Saga of the Witch Queen), and Morfa (The Witch Queen of Cair Urnahc). I just need to pick three. Though Morfa and Trilena have both come back from the dead once already. I do admit that Kyleth on the top of the list to replace Masami Onishi. While I know a couple are supposed to be hags I feel that is a hold-over from the Pathfinder adventure where only witches with hags can make covens. Also no need for me to add more winter witches, my cup is over flowing with them!

But what good is killing a villain if you can't bring them back from the dead to terrorize your players? I mean characters. Yeah. Characters.

Legendary Rangers
by Jeremy W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 09/17/2022 10:44:31

The Ranger finally becomes cool:

Favored Enemy is replaced by Quarry, letting the class choose a single individual in as little as a Move Action (or Free Action, if interacting with them for at least 10 minutes), removing the need to predict how common a type of enemy will be in the game.

Wildspeak give the Ranger a continuous ability to speak with animals, and the type of creatures it works against increases with level to the point at which they can talk to rocks.

Woodland Stride becomes Relentless Stride to let the Ranger Climb and Swim faster, and eventually run along the water's surface or a wall.

Covert Nature allows you to disguise your scent (as well as other things).

Stillsense lets you detect people by air vibrations.

Thilo G. is right about one thing, though: this class has a lot of stuff, perhaps too much of it at early levels. I actually like that: I never gave the Ranger any attention before this product, and would drop the class without it. But there are better products out there if you're not interested in the type of power fantasy the previously-mentioned class features can provide.

Legendary Villains: Wicked Witches
by Timothy B. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 09/12/2022 17:24:12

Originally posted here: https://theotherside.timsbrannan.com/2022/09/100-days-of-halloween-legendary.html

PDF. 36 pages. 1 title page, 1 table of contents, 1 page OGL. Color cover and interior art.

I went into this expecting some NPCs, and I got that, but this is also more here.

There are three new archetypes presented here, the consort of fiends, the curio collector, and the shadow sister.

All are presented as being evil, which is great fun really. I do love an evil witch. All of these are quite fun too, but it is the consort of fiends and shadow sister that have the most of my attention.

Each archetype has appropriate powers to call on. The Consort of Fiends for example has powers and fluff thatmake it feel like a 5e Warlock. The Shadow Sister works with any of the various Shadow prestige classes we have had since the early 3e days.

Speaking of which there is also a prestige class offered here, the Hag Matron, which makes the connection between witches and hags stronger. The witch in question actually transforms into a hag as she gets stronger. This reminds me a bit of the old Van Richten's Guide to Witches from the AD&D 2nd Ed Ravenloft days. This would certainly fit in well with that. Also different sorts of hags have different powers.

We also get a bunch of Patron Oaths, which are different ways at looking at the patrons.

There are new witch hexes, new magic items, and a lot of "lesser" familiars.

All in all a very fine addition to the trove of witch related material available for Pathfinder. The focus on evil witchcraft is a great bonus here.

Boricubos: The Lost Isles (5E)
by Andres R. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/31/2022 21:52:17

This is an excellent supplement if you're looking for a Caribbean/Taíno based setting.

It's quite clear that this was a labor of love from the authors. The amount of research, respect, and dedication poured into these pages is very impressive.

In this supplement, you get:

  • 7 new races, with 3 subraces on 6 of them
  • 3 new subclasses for the 12 base classes (artificer isn't part of the 5e SRD)
  • 1 new class (shaman) with 7 subclasses
  • An archipelago location and its corresponding history and pantheon
  • Several new monsters
  • 3 adventures

All the races are interesting and provide options for players to role-play in. They tie in with both the world created in Boricubos as well as the real life parallels it's based on.

From the subclasses, I don't have much experience, but reading through the monk and paladin ones, they're impressive. The Way of the Balance is the damage dealing option, while the Way of the Peace balances neatly keeping the peace while in combat. The Oath of Exorcism and the Oath of Wyrmslayer have a lot of potential. The only one I thought was weaker was the Oath of Zeal, as it requires a lot of interaction with the faith of others, particularly enemies.

The Shaman is a Wisdom-based half caster that focuses on protecting nature via temporary Animist Spirit Pacts (changeable after a long rest) and more permanent Boons and Spirit Guardian (chosen at level 3). They prepare a subset of spells like the Cleric, once after a long rest. The pacts a Shaman can enter are all quite useful, and can give a lot of flexibility to tackle encounters (if the player prepare properly). Boons have some gems, but nothing stands out as bad. The Spirit Guardians have a distinctive personality. Even the weaker one (I think it's the Lore Guardian) has a lot of potential.

I've only deeply read one of the adventures. They use a lot of the framework created in this supplement to give them life. I might start with Prophet of Perdition.

If you are a GM, do not skip the GM's guide. Trust me, it provides a lot of needed insight into the proposed story hooks.

I would have like if it included a printable player's primer. This would make it easier to bring everyone up to speed on the supplement available options. I'll probably write something for when I run it.

A very minor complaint I have is the lack of backgrounds for the characters. But this is easily fixable by using Custom Backgrounds so it doesn't detract from the gameplay.

My biggest complaint is that it doesn't provide guidance on integrating it to a larger world. There's a sample village that provides an example on how a GM might do it, so that can be used as a basis.

TLDR: If you have an interest in a pre-Columbian Caribbean setting for D&D 5e or Pathfinder, this is an excellent supplement. The ancestries and subclasses provided are catchy and interesting, and the new class provides a very flexible approach to the game. When I get a group for this, I hope we can have lots of fun.

Thank you to all that worked on this project.

Legendary Occultists

I normally find most of the "Legendary" books rather fun and well written, however, as David C. pointed out this tome has many flaws, which prevent the book from being as great as it could have been. Therefore, with a saddened heart, I have to rate this as being "1" star. :(

Legendary Occultists
by David C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/05/2022 19:34:55

When I purchased this, I expected the usual level of polish Legendary Games puts into their Legendary Class Line. Until now, I have never been disappointed to see what Legendary will do to spice up a 1st party class. This book is the first time I have ever been disappointed to buy one of their products. The revamped Legendary Occultist class is an undercooked mess with a host of talent-like class features that all amount to narrow +1 or +2 bonuses to things, sometimes not even connected to the at times nonsensical prerequisites (Luck Bonuses to Attack rolls and damage rolls, purchased separately, with Enchantment Wizard as the prerequisite spell list for an example). Some of these bonuses don't even stack with common equipment (A +2 Armor Bonus while not wearing armor does not stack with Mage Armor, and a +1 Resistance Bonus to saves is most certainly not worth a feat-equivalent talent slot. Both are matched by 4k GP Items the class can easily gain via their Antiques class feature for crying out loud). Other bonuses are just poaching class features from other classes wholesale. The class feels like part of it was made by someone with a great concept in their head, and the remainder was made by someone who just rushed out a bunch of content to fill a space quota.

The 1P Occultist material, primarily Element School Implements, would almost be better, but the balance level is wildly off from element to element (Earth gives DR 1/Adamantine per focus point invested. Fire? 0.5 Fire Resistance.). Some elemental implements don't even provide usable benefits until mid-levels. And to top it all off, the book's most powerful bit of content isn't even for the Occultist, Legendary or otherwise.

I think this could have been great with a couple more editorial passes, maybe the Legendary Occultist could actually be what the authors clearly want: A math-lite collector of old relics of power. The 1P Occulltist Material likewise could be excellent if it was properly balanced (and usable from the beginning, looking at Wood School).

The simple fact that I can see the potential for something fun in this makes it all the more frustrating. One Star as it is.

Legendary Shamans: Second Edition (PF2)
by Alexai Z. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/25/2022 21:52:27

The book feels like it should have had a once-over by an editor. The colors and boxes of the traits ("uncommon," "shaman," etc.) are rough and don't follow established convention, the wind spirit mentions elementals with the "wind" trait (air trait?), there are unicode boxes in the lower-left of every page. This feels incomplete and of low quality, regardless of how well it's balanced.

Gothic Grimoires: The Necrotic Verses 5E
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/18/2022 00:35:08

This reads like what it is: a conversion of a Pathfinder product to D&D 5th Edition. The titular Necrotic Verses have a neat enough backstory (blatantly inspired by H.P. Lovecraft's "The Music of Erich Zann"), followed by mechanics allowing bards to learn new spells and "masterpieces" from the work. The masterpieces are music-themed abilities that permanently replace a bard's feats or spell slots; each has a very detailed description with evocative imagery, but also complicated mechanics much more suited to Pathfinder than 5E. (Also, some Pathfinder terminology managed to sneak through.) This product might suit 5E DMs or players who enjoy more complex rules than usual, but I suspect most would find this too cumbersome to use.

Ultimate Commander (5E)
by James B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 03/05/2022 00:20:22

The core concept of this third-party D&D 5th Edition book is neat - a class called the General that can command a "squad" of soldiers, much like other classes have animal companions and the like. The squad is represented in an abstract way, and levels with the General. They also include a variant called the Hordelord, which has a horde of zombies instead of living soldiers.

The problem is the execution of this concept - very wordy, and very complicated. There are just way too many options for the General and for the squad (including 13 subclasses!), and it's a slog to read through. (The Hordelord has far fewer options, but is still complicated at its core.) It's not very surprising to realize that this was a conversion of a Pathfinder product; the mechanics feel much more at home in that sort of game than they do in the leaner approach taken in 5E.

I imagine there are 5E players who would love these rules, but for most, I suspect this would be just too much. Shame, as the core idea is pretty cool. (Originally posted on Goodreads)
