Dicey Tales
by Jonathan [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/08/2023 00:33:59

Fantastic new addition to the Barbarians of Lemuria family. Can be used to run treasure-seeking pulp adventure ala Indiana Jones/The Mummy/Tomb Raider/Nathan Drake/Allan Quatermain/Clive Cussler and other pulp adventure as well, such as 1930s/1940s gangster era to noir, etc.

Just a beautiful and lite yet robust set of rules. Fast-paced action and cinematic gameplay are inherent in this system.

We wanted to try something different from the usual fantasy game and one of my players wanted to do something, “Pulpy.” We gave “Dicey Tales” a shot and everyone had a blast. The rules perfectly fit the style of the genre and keep everything streamlined, fast and furious. Super fun. Give it a shot. You won't be disappointed.

I love pulp. Read tons of these old pulp stories such as Doc Savage, the Shadow and the Avenger. Also read a good deal of neo-pulp. So not surprisingly I love pulp RPGs. If there is a pulp TTRPG, there is a good chance I have purchased it.

Dicey Tales is a light and easy pulp RPG. Found it very easy to get a handle on the rules and quickly get into the game. Would recommend to anyone looking for a simple but good game system to run pulp adventures.

Dicey Tales is a fantastic rules-light pulp rpg. The Dicey Tales rules cover everything you need - weapons & firearms, vehicles and chase rules, a great selection of NPCs and creatures (both normal and legendary), and mysterious powers – to help you create whatever pulp adventures you love. The book is well laid out and edited; it has fantastic illustrations throughout which set the tone perfectly. There is even a great introductory adventure to start you off.

I buy a lot of pulp RPG's. A LOT!

Between careers and boons and flaws I can pretty much make up any pulp character I can think of. So far I have made your typical pulp adventurer, noirish private investigator, wild western gunslinger, a gentleman theif, and a low-level hero.

The system is simple yet elegant. I am not familiar with Barbarians of Lemuria, so I didnt know anything about this system before hand (after reading Dicey Tales, Ill definitely check it out), but its easy enough to understand and start playing.

The game has everything you could want to run a pulp game. Great character creation rules, an exciting and simple system for tasks and combat, a chapter on vehicle chases and even has a sample zppelin! Every pulp game needs a zeppelin. The book continues with rules for dangers you may come across when adventuring. Several pages of NPC's, enemies and creatures so you don't have to roll up your own when your in a hurry. Personally I can't wait for my players to fight a giant crab! Status for supernatural creatures are in the book too; Werecreatures, undead, vampires, etc.

Want some powers in your pulp game like The Shadow? This book's got you covered with a whole capter on powers and a little write up on creating your own.

The book ends with a fairly lengthy adventure.

If you love pulp you can't go wrong with Dicey Tales. I highly recommend it.

Legends of Steel - Barbarians of Lemuria Edition
by David D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/10/2018 17:22:10

Contains the complete BOL core rules, a custom setting, an expanded bestiary, 2 introductory adventures and a selection of pregens.

The rules are simple, elegant and beautiful. 5/5 for the rules.

The setting 'Erisia' is more detailed than the 'Lemuria' of the core BOL rulebook, but still lacking in details for actual play. It's a broad sketch rather than a complete picture. This leaves GMs freedom to make the setting their own however. 3/5 for the setting

If you already have the BOL ruleset I, personally don't think the setting is strong enough to warrant a purchase, but I have no regrets from my purchase either. It's certainly not 'Bad' it just could be better.

Interior art is black and white and of average quality.

Legends of Steel - Barbarians of Lemuria Edition
by Chris B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/21/2015 18:48:47

I rather like this book, it's clean, it's professional and it's got all the stuff the Legends of Steel had but coupled with a personally (which means subjective taste) believed to be better game system for Sword and Sorcery. There is enough detail about the various 'nations' and cities in the setting's world of Erisa, but more than enough wiggle room for players to expand as needed or wanted. There are the same sample adventures that the other Legends of Steel products have, but they've been nicely converted for the Barbarians of Lemuria system.

However it's not perfect. There are some specific issues I take with concerning the character options. Some of the two point advantages are a little too unbalanced, and apparently bare handed fighting gives you a bonus, but there's no specialist bonus for those who want be an expert in a class of weapons (like a Sword or Axe Master.)

There's also the matter of the weapon chart having a single flaw of not combining clubs and staff together, because frankly, they're pretty interchangeable in the base system.

On the other hand, the art is sparse and serviceable but with no real piece popping out and grabbing the viewer. It's functional, so at least those that don't like art in their books could find it easier to ignore.

That said, most of the issues are incredibly minor and I'd still recommend this book if you like the BoL system especially if you want a mostly premade setting to work with that's closer to the old Savage Sword of Conan magazines of the 70's.

Legends of Steel - Barbarians of Lemuria Edition
by Michael H. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/11/2013 01:29:42

With all the great background of the Savage Worlds edition that I already have, but ported into the wonderful Barbarians of Lemuria rules. I was very eager to learn more of these rules, but had to forebear till I could find them in a product that did not have pictures I found objectionable. While I fully understand that such is commonplace in the Swords and Sorcery genre, I still cannot accept it into my home. I was absolutely delighted to get this book.

The BoL rules are light and look faster and easier than those of my old flame, Savage Worlds. I look forward to testing this assumption. A simple 2d6 mechanic drives everything, so there is no wondering which dice to use or anything like that.

Characters are simple but elegant with a dozen or so important things to note on the character sheet, which it seems should be pyrographed into rabbit skins in old nordic runes or something to keep up with the amazing setting.

There is still the great discussion of the genre, and the world presented with its gazeteer will work to one degree or another anywhere along the spectrum.

In short, pick it up if you want a great setting for the S&S genre and concise fast rules.

Dicey Tales #2
by Andrew G. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 12/02/2012 03:26:30

Whilst Dicey Tales #1 was excellent as a source book for the pulp genre, Dicey Tales #2 moves into a slightly different, and in my opinion, possibly better area.

It is now, in essence, a proper "fanzine" for the BoL system - albeit with superb production values!

It still has at its core the beating pulp heart of DT#1; and builds on the pulp source material with an excellent bestiary (which is, obviously, useable with any genre), new Boons & Flaws, and a cool adventure (Nazis! mystery! ghost Vikings!). The addition of a Lemurian and a further Legends of Steel adventure just makes it perfect for those of us who enjoy a range of genres.

DT#2 is, I believe, a love letter to the BoL system - get it, feel the love!

Dicey Tales #1
by JERRY M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/21/2012 17:36:14

OK, this one took me a little by surprise.

Evil DM took an already great system (BoL) and adds another genre (Pulp Adventure) to the list of playable games! Nice, concise rules, some nice boons and flaws that capture the feel of everything from Indiana Jones and Amelia Peabody to the Shadow and the Phantom...

The adventures are also fun and well-written. I might even adapt them both to be good BoL roleplaying adventures. (Easy enough to replace San Francisco Museum with some city-state building...)

All in all, funa nd well worth it.

Another great BoL product from Evil DM

And it not only fleshes out the Pulp Era, but the core BoL as well.

You get some great new rules (some of the Boons and Flaws will be modded for my own homebrew BoL adventures) and not one, not two, but 3 adventures: one each for BoL, Pulp, and Legends of Steel.

One of the best things about Evil DMs adventures, is that they are adaptable. Even the Pulp Adventure could, (with a little tweaking of the main badguys) be used as a fun BoL exploratory adventure.

All in all, well worth the $$$ and the time. A great resource for fans of any of the BoX games.

Legends of Steel - Barbarians of Lemuria Edition
by Jonathan D. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 02/10/2012 16:44:50

If you already own "Barbarians of Lemura - Legendary Edition", there's not a lot of reasons to the buy this product. I was disappointed with the lack of new content. The book rehashes the BoL rules. Many of the Careers/Boons/Flaws overlap. And the Armor/Weapon lists are almost identical. The one draw to this book is the bestiary. It offers stats for mythological beasts with familiar names (as opposed to the creatures in the BoL book). There's very little art in the book. In conclusion, there's some good ideas but not enough to warrant a 15 dollar price tag.

Legends of Steel: ZeFRS Edition
by Patrick C. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/03/2011 10:58:42

One of the best RPG systems around, slick mechanisms and very broad character creation system. It works very well with detailed and speedy resolution. And one of the best settings around (I already had it for Savage Worlds). Very evocative and full of flavour.

A real killer combination. The Evil DM is slowly producing little gems one fter another.
