Cardstock Miniature Set #1 - Elven/Fairies
by David W. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/17/2013 09:13:08

This set offers some beautifully drawn elf/faeries and it offers the easy to use layers that we are used to seeing with Lord Zsezse's releases.

Lots of color options and 10 different poses to choose from. The downside is all ten figures share the same options (as far as color and layers). If you wanted a uniform look (in case of an army or clan), then this is actually a great option. If you wanted to make each figure unique (as far as hair, clothing and "ball" options), then you will have to print out a whole page of each figure.

The options create an almost limitless array of options, so if you can't find the color combination you are looking for here, then you don't need it.

A great set of miniatures!

Ground set #15 - Astral Plane
by Chris H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 06/14/2013 14:24:06

Like all LZW Ground Sets, Astral Plane offers a substantial collection of 6x6 tiles in various configurations, with a “pavement” texture sitting atop a background texture. In this case, the background looks like outer space, and the pavement looks like bumpy green cobblestones. Many tiles are punctuated with ripples or vortexes of purple energy. The whole effect is sufficiently odd to befit an exotic setting like an astral plane, and the artwork beautifully complements LZW’s Battlemap: The Plane of Havoc. However, the Astral Plane tiles are 6x6 and the Plane of Havoc tiles are 7x10 with well-defined outside borders, so they don’t really fit together that well as a practical matter.

Battlemap - The Plane of Havoc
by Chris H. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 06/14/2013 14:22:39

This latest in LZW’s series of battlemaps with a connected storyline brings characters into an otherworldly realm “paved” with something that looks like green cobblestones. The artwork is beautifully executed, but perhaps a little too tightly tied into LZW’s ongoing story. The map is long and thin, with unfortunate bottlenecks at a few points, making it a little bit “railroady.” The really significant negative, though, is the depiction of Abaddon chained at the end of the “room.” Having him pictured on the map ties him down, either making him more of a terrain feature than a creature or forcing players and DMs to ignore the printed representation if Abaddon gets loose. Also, although the artwork here blends beautifully with the artwork in LZW’s Ground Set #15 - Astral Plane, the Astral Plane tiles are 6x6 and the Plane of Havoc tiles are 7x10 with well-defined outside borders, so they don’t really fit together that well as a practical matter.

Ground set #15 - Astral Plane
by Ralph Y. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/01/2013 12:08:45

Really loving this tile set. The square-tile geomorph approach works well in the context of building floating islands of matter floating in the void. Lord Zsezse really created a comprehensive set of tiles here -- more than fifty, compared to the twenty or so in a typical tile set. Lord Zsezse products are generally .pdfs designed to be printed out and used on cardstock, either as maps or as paper models. The Ground Set line, though, works brilliantly with virtual tabletops like Maptool once you convert the .pdfs to .gifs and crop the excess whitespace out. I would urge Zsezse to offer .gif or .png format tiles prerendered for these purposes, but even without its worth the extra work to convert it on your own for tabletop use.

Also worth noting that the Astral Plane/Limbo/Otherdimensional nature of this tileset is useful for an incredibly wide range of genres of gaming, in a way that dungeon geomorphs aren't.

Battlemap - Way to Cthulhu - FREE
by Alastair M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/30/2013 07:10:19

A glorious piece of subterranean dungeon artwork rendered in Battlemap vertical plan for tabletop use, and in isometric view with cutaway walls and archways to make you wish there was also a 3D model of the whole. The PDF Battlemap lets you toggle on or off a one-inch square grid, the only map-layer option in this product, but as almost all the floor is already conveniently flagged with one-inch square stones, that affects only a couple of small areas in the largest central chamber of the three provided. An excellently timeless temple to culminate any horror adventure in. Or perhaps finding it would be just the start...

Ancient Worlds - Column Circle
by Alastair M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/30/2013 07:08:42

This kit builds into a damaged ring of five, fluted-look stone columns supporting stone-slab lintels, somewhat after the fashion of a small round ancient Roman temple. However, the columns and their bases are pentagonal, not circular, and the lintel-ring is angled too, not rounded, which nicely hints at some alternative civilization instead. The model fits together well, and comes with three different colour schemes using PDF layers, in common with the other Lord Zsezse "Ancient Worlds" products. Unlike some of those though, the options for customization beyond such colour and landscape changes are a little more limited. If you wanted a structure with a complete lintel-ring, for instance, you'd need to print several repeat pages and do a degree of recutting to create a proper fit, as the basic kit doesn't provide a full set of lintel-slabs. Even so, in its "natural state", a pleasing complement to the "Ancient Worlds" line.

Ancient Worlds - Megalith Circle
by Alastair M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/23/2013 09:19:16

An easy-to-build 3D stone circle on a six-inch square base, all items with layer options in the PDF file, so you can toggle between three different 2D landscape textures and model stone colours, and even add a squared one-inch grid to the base if required. But there's also a curious circular symbol scribed on each stone, and thanks to a series of additional layers, these can be made to glow blue, green or red. These colour options are worth exploring fully, because I found they're not quite the same as each other, and by activating more than one symbol-colour layer together, you can actually achieve a further range of subtly different colours and effects. Plus of course, you could use them as individual standing stones rather than "just" in a ring. An excellent addition to the Lord Zsezse Ancient Worlds range.

Ancient Worlds
by Alastair M. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 05/16/2013 06:38:51

Temple, mausoleum, alien UFO garage, concealed entrance to a missile silo - the 3D centrepiece of this set could be any of those things, or far more, while its PDF layer options mean you could have three near-identical structures waiting for your adventurers in completely different parts of the world, each with a slightly different surface colouring and design. And each with an architecture that's not quite like the ancient buildings from any of those places. If that's not enough to worry them, maybe the monolithic door-slab, with its skull and curvilinear design will help!

Construction is straightforward, and the final models robust (I used 200 gsm/110 lb card for mine), though as always with card and paper kits, attention and care is needed in places. The designers have thoughtfully continued the surface colouring beyond the folds and edges so minor mistakes don't show as much, and the usual edging with a felt pen will hide any white fold lines once the glue has set. My one small gripe would be the dashed black "fold here" markings are sometimes a little too obvious on the finished objects. Oh, and you might want to think about adding some weight to the inside of the door-slab before gluing it up, as it's free-standing if you want to leave it able to open, so is prone to on-table breezes. No such problem with the slide-off roof though.

The complete set includes four PDF pages of detailed 2D surface mats, layered to match the kits, again beautifully designed, and with an optional square grid that can be toggled on or off before printing. Each of the full mat sets is available without a grid as a single 200 dpi poster-sized JPEG image additionally.

Having placed your main structure in its tabletop landscape, you can then add from a selection of eight different columns and two arch-tops, all available in each of the three matching formats, to increase the hinted-at size of the original complex, providing cover and concealment as well. The columns have separate bases and tops, adding to the potential for variation, and come in three fully intact and upright forms (though one has nailed-on metal patches over some damaged areas), all of which will support the arches, three angled and partly buried/sunken ones, and two broken styles, one with a rounded-off top that looks tricky to build on the printed sheet, but which largely slides together on its own once scored and cut.

Customization is very practical. Simple changes, such as placing the door-slab inside the building rather than outside as shown on the photos (to really irritate your party, why not add two, one outside, one in!), or using one or more pieces printed out using a different layer colouring, need little effort. However, there are plenty of other ideas to explore. For example, one of the two alternative building bases has a 2D printed staircase leading down in the middle of the floor. This could be easily cut out and recessed below floor level (assuming you use thick card or foamboard to mount the base upon), with a new stone "trapdoor" covering the hole cut out from the other building base. As a temple, an idol of your choice could be added inside, but why not use that round-topped broken column instead? Some of its surface markings could look like an eye, and ancient temples from the real-world Classical Mediterranean civilizations actually used stones as idols in places, some perhaps originally meteorites. Plus with other matching colour scheme models available in the Lord Zsezse Ancient Worlds range, such options expand still further.

However, make the most of this kit too, and don't think it's "just" that temple building!

Dark Crypts - Chambers #2
by Megan R. [Featured Reviewer] Date Added: 02/24/2013 10:03:10

Whether or not you use miniatures, here are some beautiful crypts to put in front of your players as their characters explore the horrors you have prepared for them.

Good command of PDF technology has been utilised to make these chambers versatile. By selecting the layer(s) as appropriate, you can fine-tune the appearance of each room: bare chamber, room with furniture and fittings, or room with furniture and fittings with some torches lit. Then you can also use the buttons provided to make limited changes such as passages opening into the room or even if doors are open or closed.

There are seven different basic chambers, but you can make them look different by accessing the various features. There are one-page tactical maps, multi-page scale battleplans (1 inch representing 5 feet) and vast sheets for each complete chamber - these work with various virtual table-top systems if playing online, or can make unusual posters if you have access to a large-scale printer (or go to a copyshop).

A very good way of letting your players see what you mean...

Without a doubt, this is my favorite game-table model. It has a playable interior for every floor (3) and has multiple texture/geometry options. And I recently released cutfiles so that building it takes hours less time.

Battlemap - Temple of Abaddon
by Steven S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 11/04/2012 18:06:52

Yet another gorgeous map from LZW. This is the latest in the Under the Castle series and picks up right where Prison in the Deep left off -- with a mysterious set of huge doors flanked by rune-encrusted columns. The only quirk with this map is that the final 'room' is a three-level vertical chamber, which is presented as three side-by-side rooms. After reading the description carefully and looking closely at the map, you can see how the three relate to each other in three-dimensional space. While initially confusing and possibly a mental roadblock for players, this layout makes for the easiest gameplay and I can't think of a better way to lay out the map.

As usual, the map includes full-size poster views, one-room-per-page views, and isometric visual aides -- which are great for displaying on a monitor when the players are in a particular area of the map to give perspective. Also included are the typical room-by-room descriptions and overall map scenario which are very helpful in understanding the map and a great source of inspiration for encounters.
