Fate Accessibility Toolkit
by Katriel P. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/03/2019 17:20:54

It seems like every week (at least) I see, in various systems and forums, someone going "a player wants to play a Deaf character, but wouldn't they then have difficulty communicating to the party/ wouldn't they then be immune to silence spells etc" or wanting to play blind characters but "then how would they notice enemies" or discussing a player who wants a character with mutism, etc... and almost always, these conversations are from people who have no knowledge of how these conditions actually can go, leading to not only system modeling questions (or the dreaded "but it'd be unrealistic" in a game that might have dragons in it...) , but also ignorance of how people with these conditions go about their lives. We play too, we live too, and disability is not an off/on switch.

I work in accessibility and AM disabled. And I have been waiting for this book since Evil Hat announced it, and the people who worked on this have disabilities of their own. This is not only an amazing resource to make characters and help people who don't have a clue about disabilities try to understand that process, but also to be inclusive and respectful of people who do have disabilities at the same time - who want to see ourselves represented also.

Thank you, Evil Hat. And thank you to everyone who worked on this book.

Dresden Files Accelerated
by Adrian S. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 08/03/2019 09:14:15

This is a magnificent piece of work, reminiscent of a dying art in RPG core books. By that, I mean a slightly smaller-than-usual book (in dimensions), coming in at 256 pages, and containing absolutely everything you need to run the game in one place. Add in some Fate dice, and you have the makings of a long-term campaign for very little outlay. Production values are high, the artwork is uniformly good (players of the Dresden Files co-op card game will recognise many pieces) and the writing style is highly engaging.

Having no experience with the Fate system before this, I am led to believe the 'Accelerated' moniker points to a streamlined version of the rules, specifically designed to lower the learning curve for the game. This certainly works for me, but don't let the 'lowering the learning curve' description fool you. The system is elegant and easy to learn (and run) but the flexibility becomes apparent after you play a few sessions; and then possibilities start emerging and an appreciation for the design really stares out from the pages.

Character creation is very easy and straighforward, yet allows for high levels of customisation. For example, you could create two Wizards, but with the various packages and intepretations left up to the players, they can be wildly different, and completely playable. Characters can be drawn from Wizards, Fae, Vampires, Werewolves, Knights, and regular folk who have become entangled with the supernatural. The perks for each type of character mean that everyone has a chance to shine; a Reporter will be able to contribute as much as a Werewolf, just in different ways in different scenes - and there's very little overlap.

The main points are to do with the party's familiarity with the novels. Firstly, as noted by other reviews, this book assumes you are completely up-to-date on the novels (as of this review, you should have read 'Skin Game' before diving into the RPG to avoid spoilers). This is a major bonus in some ways, but a drawback in others. Secondly, there is a certain level of lore required to completely immerse yourself in the setting, so the GM at least should be familiar with the novels and the setting. In our group, one of the players and myself are Dresden fans, the other two players have never read any of Jim Butcher's work (for shame). The players unfamiliar with the setting picked it up well (we drew a lot of references to World of Darkness, with which they are familiar), but the player with setting knowledge was able to take a greater advantage of opportunities in the game. This sounds like common sense, but it's worth noting nonetheless, in case you are considering the purchase.

Overall, this is a highly flexible game that encourages the GM and players to work together on the story, supported by a great rules set, with all the tools (except for the Fate dice) required to play the game in one volume. As a fan of co-operative play in general, and Dresden in particular, I've purchased a physical copy to complement the digital, and will be running this for some time to come.

In a hobby where playing a D/deaf character generally got you 3 extra points to offset your "negative trait", this reframing of disability is refreshing and empowering to people who want to bring their whole selves to the table.

All in all, good job. I commend the effort.

Two recurring themes in the toolkit are how to be inclusive of players with disabilities, and how to portray disabilities in the game with respect and verisimilitude instead of caricatures or ignorance.

The book is much stronger on portrayal than on inclusion, probably because it is, after all, an RPG toolkit. It's easier to suggest game mechanics than it is cover the broad topics of accessibility and inclusiveness.

The material on portrayal is generally pretty good. The aspects and stunts ring true (at least for the disabilities where I have any famiilarity) and let the character do cool or interesting things without lapsing into super-hearing-because-you're-blind stuff. While some might claim that representing disabilities with game mechanics trivializes the disabilities, I disagree. Trivialization would be in the attitude of the players. On the contrary, seeing "someone like me" represented in the game can be quite gratifying to those whose experiences are perpetually ignored or misrepresented in game settings. Or it could be the last thing they want to see; listen to your audience and be flexible.

The material on inclusiveness and accommodation was good as far as it went, but I was hoping for more. The appendix on "Resources" is thin - blink and you'd miss it. Frankly, the half page of Resources looks like a 5-minute afterthought. I was hoping for more material along the lines of "Here are the tools we've found useful" for accommodating various disabilities at the table, or online. You don't have to get down to specific product endorsements. Another area where I wanted to see more was about breaks. Some disabilities force people to take breaks during play, so I'd be interested in tips on various ways to handle breaks (short of "everyone just stops playing for as long as it takes").

The appendix on ASL signs for Fate terms is best suited for someone who already has some facility with ASL but who wants to establish some signs for specialized terms. For my part, I'd sign some of them differently, so I'm curious whether these are tried-and-true signs from on-going gaming groups, or something someone made up for this toolkit. In any case, paragraph-long descriptions of signs are hard to follow even if you have some ASL skills. Someone who has no knowledge of ASL probably isn't going to get these signs right. A page of videos demonstrating these signs would be more helpful than paragraphs of description.

I have my own disabilities to deal with. In fact, I had a flare-up while writing this review. As a result, it took me almost three hours to write these few paragraphs. (That's another thing about disabilities. In some cases, they can vary by the minute, hour, day, or year, sometimes with warning, sometimes without.)

Creator Reply:
Thanks for the review! Those critiques look fair. We are hoping to include illustrations of the signs in the ASL appendix (if we put this book into print eventually, videos wouldn't print so good) once the art budget is achieved (we'll need to land close to Platinum for that).

Fate Adversary Toolkit
by Jim B. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/27/2019 06:55:25

This does a great job of breaking down different sorts of adversaries, including conventional NPCs as well as hazards, obstacles, countdowns, and so on. It also offers advice on how to put zones to good use. It's presented clearly and usefully.

Obviously, the focus is on adversaries, but I also use it for building allied or neutral NPCs -- adversaries of the PCs' adversaries.

You can get the basic mechanics and discussions from the excellent fate-srd site for free. What does the book add? Examples and artwork. The material you can find at fate-srd is only about 30% of what the book contains. The other 70% consists of 10 "spreads" (scenarios) that offer worked examples in the form of settings in ten different genres.

The spreads are clearly presented and each one hangs together nicely. The mix of genres is good. Even if you don't anticipate running one genre or another, you could still pick ideas out of the example spreads. You could probably reskin any of them for your setting of choice.

Each spread gives you about 8 pages of a scenario with some backstory. It presents a series of adversaries, using the toolkit's mechanisms, and discusses how they relate to each other and to the world. It tells you how you might incorporate the PCs into the scenario. Each spread has notes on how to use it for anything from a one-shot adventure to an on-going campaign. The spreads also offer notes on reskinning. There are no maps.

The artwork is good, but if the only added benefit to buying the book was the art, I'd pass. Seeing a drawing of Captain Pulaski, for example, gives me a visual, but I can get just as much out of the book without it. For me, the value of the book is seeing the adversary toolkit applied in practice in the form of ten adventure settings. (And you're helping to support the work by paying a few bucks.)

The book is all Fate Core. I run Fate Accelerated, but there's still value here. Much of the material is usable for FAE as it is. Where the toolkit discusses the Fate Core skills a Threat might have, for example, you can adapt that advice for constructing the character's high concept or other aspects. If you use one of the example scenarios, you'll need to convert the characters from Core to Accelerated. The Fate Accelerated/Core Conversion Guide can prove helpful there.

I admit that I have only made a cursory flip through of the book, but it's not often that I can say there is something new and unique in the RPG world and this is it.

This is a product that was desperately needed, and by having members of the impacted communities writing the sections just adds more to it.

This is a book that every game designer should have. Full stop. Perhaps every game can't utilize everything in it...but it should be in your awareness.

Now, I'd just like to see a similar book on other diversity issues like race, sexual orientation, and gender.

Fate Core System
by Björn L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/08/2019 13:39:41

The following review was originally published in Mephisto 66 and translated from German (find original German review below).

Fate Core System

The Fate Core System is a universal role-playing system - and a quite unusual one. According to Fate, the focus is on the characters, which many role-playing systems would claim for themselves. But here, the players have a more considerable influence on the overall storyline of a Fate game than for other role-playing systems.

But let's start at the beginning: The central element of Fate is the so-called fate points. Fate points can be used by players to repeat dice rolls and to improve the result. To receive them, players must accept their own character's weaknesses or act as the character concept dictates (which may not always suit the player at the moment).

This approach quickly leads to Fate's next central concept, the aspects. Aspects are descriptive attributes that can be applied to anything: characters, places, situations, or even an entire game world. For example, the aspect of a character could be: "Nobody stops me." On the one hand, such an aspect means that the player can improve his dice rolls by spending Fate Points when it comes to not being stopped. However, the descriptive formulation also allows this aspect to be used differently, i.e., when the gamemaster demands that the character cannot be stopped in a situation - even if it might be wiser in this situation not to charge onward. In this way, the aspects are quite central character elements, which can be adapted to a certain extent in the later course of the game. Fate even goes so far that players can influence the game world by choosing an aspect. For example, in a fantasy world, if a player chooses the aspect of being a "Mage of the Black Circle," that means that this circle must become part of the game world.

At the beginning of character creation, there are two central aspects, the high concept, and the trouble. The high concept describes what the character is. The trouble is a problem, a difficulty, or a dark side. While the trouble seems to be a weakness, it is often an excellent way to generate fate points. Besides, each character gets three more aspects that are developed by interaction with the other players. The first common adventures and encounters of the characters are described, and character traits and the relationships between the characters are developed.

There are actual game statistics in the form of skills (Fate does not use attributes). The distribution of the skills is very simple and follows the so-called pyramid. Each character gets one great, two good, three fair, and four average skills that give him a bonus of +1 to +4. Fate uses four fate dice for every roll: six-sided dice with three symbols of plus, minus, and blank. By adding these values, the result ranges from -4 to +4. Depending on the roll, either a fixed difficulty or an opponent's roll must be exceeded. Skills can be used to overcome obstacles, create advantages, attack, or defend. Of course, not every skill is suitable for each of these test types. The tests become more dynamic when aspects are used in the situations to get advantages and bonuses on the rolls (accepting disadvantages of aspects again brings fate points).

Even though the basic system is comparatively simple, the book takes a lot of time to explain the subtleties and the somewhat unusual concept. Damage is also dealt with in an unusual way. If a character takes damage, he can either check off stress boxes, of which he has very few, or he can take consequences, which again are aspects affecting the character negatively. If neither is possible anymore, then he is put out of action. Thus the combat system, which also applies to verbal conflicts, is kept very simple. The use of game statistics for weapons and equipment is an optional rule that also remains abstract. As with other tests, this is more about a descriptive approach than a detailed record of the game world in numbers.

This idea is refined with stunts and extras. Stunts are specialties for using skills to perform unusual actions. In the beginning, the player can choose a limited number of stunts. The term extra is used for all the unique things a character can possess. Possible extras include magic or superpowers, but also special equipment or vehicles. In the example for magic, the extras depict basic magical traditions, whose aspects tell you what you can do with them. However, there are no long and detailed spell lists.

The core set of rules provides the universal game system and some examples, but no ready-to-play game world. Fate is a good system to create your own game world. The rule mechanisms are abstract enough that not every detail has to be determined technically. Even if the use of the aspects seems unusual at first, this descriptive approach can allow for a quick start. Basically, this approach fits well with characters from books or films, namely that specific basic characteristics define them, and they behave consistently within these definitions - even if it is to their disadvantage.

A good part of the book is also devoted to game master topics and not only deals with Fate's specialties but also gives general tips on how to build storylines or put together entire campaigns.

Fate is an interesting role-playing system, but certainly not for everyone. Players who value complex rule mechanisms with many game statistics won't have much fun with the abstract system. In fact, game statistics often almost fall behind the aspects. Based on an aspect, a character can be a feared swordsman, but that doesn't say much about his skill value in combat. In fact, the aspect is even more important than the game statistic. If you interpret it correctly, it can also mean that the character is not a good fighter, but still has a certain reputation because of his aspect.

The small-format rules book is well presented, even though the drawings are black and white. Fate takes a lot of time to introduce the reader to the different facets of the game. Personally, however, a short summary would have helped me at some points to get an overview instead of getting to know all parts of the game in detail. But especially with the good and entertaining examples, it is not difficult to learn Fate.

What is also missing from the book is a scenario or a game world that introduces some of the game concepts and gives the game master a concrete approach for his first test of the game. Without the drive and the ideas to develop your own game world (or to adapt an existing game world) an essential element for starting into the game is missing.

When I started reading Fate, I was a bit skeptical at the beginning, because many concepts of role-playing games are very different from other role-playing games. But if you look at the whole system, you can see that Fate's ideas and rules are well built on each other and entirely consistent. This certainly doesn't make Fate suitable for every player, but players who do not want their characters to be reduced to numerical values and who are interested in telling stories get an excellent approach to role-playing with these aspects.

If you compare the Fate Core System with Fate Accelerated, then Fate Core System seems to me to be the more balanced system. If you're unsure whether Fate is for you in general, Fate Accelerated will give you a very quick start. Nevertheless, the Fate Core System seems more interesting, while Fate Accelerated seems primarily suited for spontaneous one-shot rounds.

(Deutsche Version)

Fate Core System

The Secrets of Cats • A World of Adventure for Fate Core
by Björn L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/08/2019 13:39:02

The following review was originally published in Mephisto 68 and translated from German (find original German review below).

The Secrets of Cats

In The Secrets of Cats, Cats have magical abilities and are the secret protectors of humanity. Therefore, they see humans as their burdens. The magic of the cats is based on the power of the names and allows them to use defensive abilities with their warding magic, to exercise control with their naming magic, to change themselves with their shaping magic and to find secret knowledge with their seeking magic. With these powers and their innate abilities, the cats face the threats for their territories and fight a secret battle against dark powers.

The Secrets of Cats is a Fate role-playing game in which players take on the role of cats. Although they can fall back on magical abilities, they also have a difficult starting position - because they are "just cats." In addition to the necessary rule adaptations and rules for magic, the book also introduces a setting, a town called Silverford, including introductory adventures.

The Secret of Cats is a well developed and multifaceted role-playing game. If you can get used to the basic idea of playing a cat (or one of the other animal species, if you like and use the expansion book The Secrets of Cats: Animals & Threats), you will get an unusual, but well refined and quite exciting game quite different from the classic game worlds.

(Deutsche Version)

Fate Accelerated Edition • A Fate Core Build
by Björn L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 07/07/2019 14:22:20

The following review was originally published in Mephisto 66 and translated from German (find original German review below).

Fate Accelerated Edition

Fate Accelerated Edition (FAE) is the little brother of Fate Core - like some kind of light version. The thin, small-format book contains a condensed and simplified version of the Fate system, providing the basic concepts and rules. The book explains the character creation with ideas like concept and dilemma as well as other aspects. The dice rolling mechanisms, different actions, and the rules for stress and consequences are explained. Instead of skills, Fate Accelerated uses approaches: six character traits from careful to flashy to sneaky, which serve as game stats and which can be enhanced with stunts. A few pages on subjects for the game master and four sample characters round off the book.

Fate Accelerated offers a very condensed set of rules, which convey the basic principles of Fate and especially the aspects compactly. The simplified rules are - at least as far as the game statistics are concerned - only partially compatible with Fate Core. This approach makes Fate Accelerated especially suitable for trying out or for fast, spontaneous rounds. All others should use Fate Core directly.

If you compare Fate Core with Fate Accelerated, then Fate Core seems to me to be the more balanced system. If you are unsure whether Fate is something for you in general, Fate Accelerated will give you a flying start. Nevertheless, the Fate Core looks more comprehensive, while Fate Accelerated is primarily suitable for spontaneous RPG evenings and one-shot stories.

Turbo Fate

Fate System Toolkit

The title Fate System Toolkit describes the book quite well: The compact book is a toolbox that has everything you need to finetune the system's various concepts and mechanics. Thus, the book is dedicated to the aspects, skills, and stunts for which it presents various alternative rules. After that, it goes even further and introduces significant changes and other rule modifications such as chases. A large part of the book is made up of the rules for magic. These are presented using three different examples, which function as an inspiration for how to design such rules. Additional rules for Kung Fu, Cyberware or mass fights are also presented. Further rules cover even more specific factors such as very large monsters or psychic powers.

As an addition to the Fate Core rules, the Fate System Toolkit is a very useful expansion, above all for game masters, who want to adapt the system to their personal needs. Of course, you won't need all the suggested rules, but the examples are well structured so that you can learn how to customize Fate yourself. The magic rules alone, with their three completely different approaches, are very inspirational and offer enough material that you almost want to build a game world or at least a campaign on them. Fate game masters, who don't want to limit themselves to prefabricated game worlds, but see Fate as their personal construction kit, get the perfect tools and manual with the Fate Systems Toolkit - and they should not miss this book!

Fate Handbuch

Masters of Umdaar • A World of Adventure for Fate Core
by Björn L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/17/2019 15:28:06

The following review was originally published in Mephisto 66 and translated from German (find original German review below).

Masters of Umdaar

Long in the past, the demiurges created great miracles and changed evolution to produce countless creatures. After the demiurges have surprisingly disappeared, the masters have risen as cruel rulers to take these powers together with the rest of the remaining technology. But the archaeonauts travel the world in search of lost technology to repel the masters. Cyborgs, chimeras, robots, hybrids, and other strange creatures are the characters that players can lead in their battle against the masters.

Masters of Umdaar is a world for FAE that offers a colorful mix of fantasy and technology. The player characters are mutants whose appearance is decided by rolling the dice and which cover a broad spectrum from plants to energy beings. In terms of rules, however, this means above all which methods (the central game statistic in FAE) are the most powerful of the character. Correspondingly, the stunts also contain bizarre powers. A new rules mechanism introduced in Masters of Umdaar is the Cliffhanger when players have to free themselves from an extreme danger within a short time. A coherent but straightforward system is offered to implement this new kind of threat. The book concludes with a few adventures and story ideas. Even though the mix of fantasy and science fiction and the theme of the game - the search for past technology - almost sounds a bit like Numenera, Masters of Umdaar is much more colorful and comic-like. If you're looking for a wild roleplaying system that is characterized by action and in which pretty much anything is possible, you'll get a quick and straightforward rule system to start with.

Masters of Umdaar

Eagle Eyes • A World of Adventure for Fate Core

The following review was originally published in Mephisto 66 for the German edition of the book and translated from German (find original German review below).

Eagle Eyes

Eagle Eyes is a game world for Fate, located in ancient Rome. The players take on the role of the so-called eagles - fictitious agents of a secret Senate organization. Their task is to complete covert missions for the Senate and thus protect the Roman Republic from conspiracies. Eagle Eyes uses the rules of FAE as the rule basis. The small-format book, which in the PDF version is also easy to read on a small tablet, first provides an insight into the world of ancient Rome. The book follows the principle of satis, which means that only the necessary information is provided, without trying to give a complete, historical overview of Rome or Roman culture. The setting is presented comprehensively, without getting lost in historical details. While Rome forms the background, the genre is noir - like the dark detective stories of the 50s. The world of Eagle Eyes is a world of conspiracies, corruption, and surprising twists.

The proposition that the players are agents of a fictitious organization is quite successful, and the approaches for characters are also manifold. A central rule element is a system to combat conspiracies. This makes it easy to see how far the players have come with their investigations.

Eagle Eyes is a simple and successful setting: the basic idea is coherent, and the implementation is convincing. The approach of not overtaxing the player with information on background facts, but creating a more straightforward and more understandable game world at the expense of historical accuracy, convinced me. Eagle Eyes is an excellent choice for gamers looking for an agent thriller against a pseudo-historical background - both for one-shots and campaigns.

(Deutsche Version)

Eagle Eyes

Nest • A World of Adventure for Fate Core
by Björn L. [Verified Purchaser] Date Added: 06/17/2019 15:04:34

The following review was originally published in Mephisto 66 for the German edition of the book and translated from German (find original German review below).

Nest

Nest is an adventure world for FATE Core and abducts players into a fairytale realm. This place - a kind of dream world - was visited by the player characters when they were children, but now as adults, the world Nest calls them back once more, so that they can save the kingdoms of Nest from a dangerous enemy.

The small-format book first introduces the world of Nest and above all the different kingdoms, namely Epoch, Bungledyne, and Conundrum. Epoch is a medieval land full of adventures, Bungledyne a steampunk world and Conundrum a fairytale realm full of riddles. These kingdoms, however, are threatened by an enemy that players must understand and fight in the campaign that makes up half the book.

As new rules, talismans - a kind of magical items - are introduced. Otherwise, the game will fall back on the basic rules. The book focuses on the background of the game world, which is presented comprehensively and above all with several different options for the game master.

Nest is a fairytale-like fantasy world, which also has a dark threat to offer, but lives more by the charm of the strange and its inhabitants. For players who are looking for a fairytale setting for FATE Core including a whole campaign (which can fill some evenings), here is a background book with a fascinating fairytale setting.

(Deutsche Version)

Nest
