Shadows of a Dying Sun - Core Rulebook

Explore a baroque world, far past its prime, built upon the bones of history long forgotten.

Shadows of a Dying Sun (or SoaDS) is a rpg rules toolkit, written by Alan Bahr. It’s explicitly designed for running dying earth genre fantasy, in modern frameworks influenced by narrative games, as well as classic adventure games.

SoaDS is written with the following philosophies in mind:

  • Death. Death is an ever-present threat for the adventurer, and as adventurers walk the Heron’s Path, they draw every closer to their inevitable demise. But approaching death can be freeing, and as such, you gain access to powerful new abilities and rules.
  • Resource-management. As many rules as possible are resources that are in the characters’ control. This allows them to be aware of where various situations and conditions are, as well as make as fully an informed choice as they can.
  • Guidelines, not absolutes. The rules in this book are designed to get you 90% of the way there. The last 10% happens at your table and makes your game truly unique. Expect to have to make rulings, not reference rules, and use the existing ideas in this book to leverage the new items you create.
  • Weird, extravagant, dying cultures and civilizations. The cities and nations that still remain in the Shadow of the Dying Sun are the last remnants of baroque and ornate worlds. The world around you should feel alien and different.

The toolkit in this game is deliberately incomplete, designed to provoke you to define the setting and world of the Dying Sun as you play through it.

This game includes solo play rules, a brief bestiary, character creation, and more.

Okay, there's something weird on the starting equipment page. It has an armor table. But Armor is a key item, so you can't have more than one key item, except Light Armor and Lockpicks. So, that would suggest you only role on it if you get Armor. But there's a result for no armor, which it explicitly tells you to ignore when you get armor, so that suggests you always roll on it. But then everyone would potentially have two key items. How does that work? The best guess I saw was that it was a case where you get to pick which one if you get armor and another key item, but that feels weird, too.

EDIT: Also, less important, on random gear, there was some disagreement on whether to go off of the game text, which says once for each column, or table design, which has it as another 1d20 by 1dx roll.

Hi it says on Pg 12 "Throughout this book we present maps and +locations that might be interesting to you. However, we’ve deliberately made the map inaccurate and contradictory with itself. This represents the surreal, unreliable and frankly flawed knowledge of the world of Shadows of a Dying Sun."

There are no maps in the book am I missing something?

Oh! Shoot, that is legacy text that shoulda been removed. A map will be forthcoming eventually, though it'll be a separate download rather than part of the print book.

Hi Eric!

A discount went out before we went live with POD. If you didn't get it, it's likely you aren't subscribed to allow us to send you emails through DTRPG. We can get you one, if you'd like though! If you email shipping at gallantknightgames dot com, we'll take care of you ASAP.

Can't wait to see this in POD. Looks like a really recent March 29th revision fixed everything, and it is just about ready to go!

Bloody Blade ability for Butcheritter copies part of carver brutal ability and has wrong damage value as well as referencing carver.

What does the illuminated orB of the grand design actually do?

Thanks! (and for the previous one below).

As for the Orb, it's just six boxes you can check that have no other penalties or drawbacks (think of it as six free armor in a sense).

Page 21, last sentence before Occupations heading. Looks to be missing a word. Don’t forget to add any bonuses you ( got/received ) from your name or titles.

The preview is....lacking.

Could we get some of the "meat" of the product in the preview?

This looks very interesting. I've only given it a cursory glance but I've noticed the aforementioned "d5" mention on p 19 (shouldn't it be d6 ??), as well as several mentions of a "Strength" attribute (I guess the right name is "Might"). I was also wondering if "Mind" (or, let's get crazy, "Wisdom") wouldn't be a better term than "Intellect" for an all-purpose mental attribute (since its definition obviously goes beyond what the term "intellect" usually covers). Just my 2 cents. So far, I really love the whole "baroque weirdness" vibe, which is indeed reminiscent of the works of Vance and Wolfe.

Hi! Thanks for the feedback. Yes, the two references to Strength on page 19 should be might. We'll address that!

Glad you're liking it.

Hi there. Question: per p.19, if you create your own name you roll a d5 to see what type of name it is. Is that a typo, or an indication that if you create your own name, it is automatically not a noble one? Thanks.

It's a typo! It'll be changed to a d6.

Genre-wise, this looks right in my wheelhouse. That said, I'm curious to know a little more about the system. I assume too that an updated version of the PDF will be available once you complete your edits.

Hi!

Absolutely, a PDF will be out when we're done with the final edits and the POD has been proofed. Northern Lights Foundry (the developer) has released the ruleset as the MAIL Guidebook, which you can find on their website.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
