TSRPG (Travel-Sized RPG)

ADD TO WISHLIST >

TSRPG (Travel-Sized RPG) is a rules-light storytelling game designed for a storyteller and one or more players that can easily be played anywhere, from the airport waiting area you are stuck in, to the overnight in some hotel where there is nothing to do (and also, of course, in your own home). All the basic rules for TSRPG fit on one page; no dice are needed; characters have just two stats, Physical and Mental; and any bookkeeping that might be required can be done on a cocktail napkin with a pen borrowed from a waiter. Action is resolved through Challenges, and the consequences of these — whether good or bad — determine the flow of a shared narrative. We have also included a version of the rules that can easily be printed out, folded up into a convenient little booklet, and tucked into your carryon so that you will have it when you need it!

TSRPG includes:

 Basic Rules that fit on just one page;

 Five pages of Optional Rules (covering equipment, NPCs, character advancement, and more);

 A sample mini-scenario, "Into the Shadows of Nyx," and four pre-generated characters, allowing both players and storytellers to jump right into the game;

 Examples of game play;

 A printer-friendly version of the Basic Rules that can be folded up into a convenient little booklet; and,

 Original illustrations by artists Bob Greyvenstein and Amanda Kahl.

  A ZIP file of resources for both storytellers and players that includes blank character sheets; character sheets, tokens, and avatars for the pre-generated characters; and the map, illustration of a monster, and tokens for the monsters that appear in the sample adventure, all of which can be especially helpful when running games online.

TSRPG is fully supported with sourcebooks that include "Arms, Armor & More," "Wands, Wagons, Whips & More," and "OS-TSRPG," along with eight compelling scenarios, "A Long Way to the Top," "A Midsummer Night's Scheme," "On the Plane of Magma," "A Violet Shade of Death," "A Rose for Erato," "Into the Terrorium," "Whiskey in the Jar," and "Temple of the Banished Suns," all of which include pregenerated characters and the basic rules for the game, allowing them to function as quick-starts for it. We have also had TSRPG translated into a number of other languages, including German (along with two adventures, „Eine Rose für Erato“ and „Auf der Ebene des Magmas“), Spanish (along with four adventures, "Una Rosa Para Erato," "Un Tono Violeta de Muerte," ""¡El Plan de Una Noche de Verano"," and "En el Plano de Magma" and the "Armas, Armaduras y Más" supplement), and Ukrainian

TSRPG can also be easily used with any existing adventures, and all a storyteller needs to do is use the narrative text from the scenario and, whenever there is a rule from the other game, substitute an appropriate Challenge instead.

I've just gone through the pdf twice and I don't see a license regarding the rules.

Presuming standard copyright applies, I can't publish my own adventures for this game and I can't reuse the game text (but I can reuse the game algorithms) in a published digital game.

Clarification would be much appreciated.

We are currently assessing the best way to proceed with licensing for "TSRPG"! Once we have got that sorted out we will reply here and otherwise get out the word about it.

In the meantime, feel free to reach out to us directly using the email address that appears on page 2 of this publication and to let us know what you have in mind, as we do not necessarily need a license to work with people directly on some things.

Just a quick question for what would be the 'standard' way of handling guesses near the edges. When there's a number from 1-10, the player has a range of +/- 2 and guesses a 2, for example.

What of those is the 'standard':
- Okay, you guess a 1, so you wasted part of your range. You succeed on 1-3.
- Since you didn't took your full range, it'll be automatically expanded towards the middle. You succeed on 1-5.
- Since you go down to -1, those two spots below 1 roll over to the other side. You succeed on 1-3 and 9-10.`
- You have to take a number between 3 and 8!

To me the third makes most sense, because the others have different drawbacks, but it's possible the most complicated. What is the default way for handling this?

Thanks, Philipp, that's a good question! The storyteller has a lot of leeway for handling situations like this and could choose any of the possibilities you describe, but our preferred option would be the third one (i.e., to allow the guess to wrap around to the other side of the number range). That's a little bit more complicated than some of the other options, but it is also the only way for a player to cover both ends of the number range!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
