100 Books to Find on a Wizard's Bookshelf

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Books can be useful and they can be valuable, and wizards and mages in particular can have valuable books related to magic on their shelves. Not every such book in a wizard's possession will be of truly outstanding value, though; the majority will be lesser books of lesser value, and this supplement has 100 books on subjects of interest to such types to flesh out their bookshelves. Whether or not any book contains information that is useful or valuable is up to the GameMaster. In a fantasy setting, even a book of lesser importance on the subject of magic will still have value, with a suggested price of 2d6 gp per book. They do not have to be books either, as these could also be found as scrolls, or perhaps clay or stone tablets. In both cases the value would be reduced and in the latter case the tablets would be much harder to transport, and much heavier.

This PDF supports Adobe layers and the page backgrounds and images can be disabled to make printing easier.

Here are some sample results:

  • Musings on the Origins of Magical Energies by Farran the Grey (A work that considers spells, such as evocation-based, that generate more energy than was put into them, and where said energy might originate)
  • Not the Shape Born In: The Magic of Polymorphing by Wen Chel (Looks at magic that can be used to polymorph the caster into different forms, or to alter part of their current form; oddly, doesn't consider using such magic on others)
  • On Summoning by Erdan the Planewalker (The book looks at conjuring creatures from elsewhere for aid and knowledge)
  • On the Evolution of Spellcraft by Rattak Varn (Essentially a book on the known history of spell use and how methods have changed over time)
  • Penmanship for Wizards by Thel Larrax (Ste-by-step lessons for improving the reader's writing skills, and descriptions as to how this can benefit them when it comes to writing scrolls and spellbooks)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
