Four Against the Great Old Ones

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The clock is ticking!

Forty days from now, a dark cult will congregate somewhere in the United States to summon a cosmic entity of infinite horror! The only hope for the world is a group of four intrepid investigators who will stop at nothing to find the necessary clues, identify the cult, and stop the great ritual before it is too late!

Four against the Great Old Ones is a game of Lovecraftian dread and horror set in the 1930s. It is an old-school pen-and-paper game that can be enjoyed in solitaire, cooperatively, or as an RPG-lite.

It is a standalone game based on the Four against Darkness system, modified to include Insanity, Helpers, 8 new main characters, a unique clue system, 6 possible final encounters (each a full mini-game), and more.

Narrative-driven and true to its sources, Four against the Great Old Ones will provide you with a deep immersion in Lovecraft's world. The game is designed to be challenging, and will require determination, bravery, skill, and favorable astral alignments to win.

Do you dare to pursue this dangerous investigation?

Do you dare to face the Great Old Ones?

Written by Marco Arnaudo, with illustrations by Andrea Sfiligoi and Many others

Is this title watermarked? The description doesn't say it is, but most of the other 4AD suppliments are apparently DRM-ed with watermarks, which is the only reason why I have not bought them so far. :(

Wanted to add a note, there are issues with the text only version. Here are all the page numbers:
28, 29, 31, 33, 34, 36, 41, 42, 45, 46, 47, 49, 54, 55, 60, 61, 63. Still able to just print those from the non-printer saver version, but would be good for future users to fix them :)

Yes, those still remain (as mentioned below, too). And the e-book version also has a few, starting with the credits on page 2, where the frame and the text in white are misaligned. (To be fair, the designer must be having one of the hardest times of his life, obviously leaving his projects kind of unimportant and pretty much secondary right now.)

Finally an update, thank you! But still no option for searching in the text... :( The text-only version would do the trick, but it looks like even this updated version comes with corrupted and/or missing parts at the bottom of some pages (page 29, 31, 45, 46, 47, 55, 60, etc.). Decreasing the font size could fix it, I reckon. However, an actual full version with bookmarks or hyperlinks and searchable text would be most appreciated!
Can't wait for the upcoming expansion(s)! (I hope those will have such handy features, too.)

The game is still awesome and all, but after a couple of plays, we have encountered a number of errors, many of which have been listed and discussed on BGG and other platforms, and apparently reported to the designer(s) / publisher(s) as well. It has been only about 4 months since its release, so I suppose a revision of the printed version might be a little early to expect (a compiled errata would still come in handy, though), but this digital version would deserve a correction, anyway. Thanks in advance!

Yep, right today! However, apparently only the original PDF file. The text-based one seems to be unmodified, unfortunately...

Are there any plans to have the main font of the pdf fixed in an update? Currently there are visual glitches wherever parts of a given character overlap (e.g. in "t" where the horizontal bar crosses the vertical base) which looks really awkward. I know, it's non-euclidean, but it also hurts legibility. ;) I'd assume the body font itself is flawed and the direction of the character paths need to be corrected so the the "even--odd rule" could be correctly applied for calculating which parts of the shape should be filled.

I agree. That font is bad as it is. And it just doesn’t fit to the theme, anyway. But the worst thing is, no device can recognize it as text, and since there are no bookmarks or hyperlinks either (as noted in one of the reviews), you have to scroll around all the time. Now, I could live with that alright, but with a text-based game on 80+ pages, searchable text would much appreciated, at least. Yes, I know there is a plain text version, but that one appears to have some parts broken and/or missing (which might be simply a result of an unrevised conversion, of course). This has been already reported, but the issue seems to remain…
If and when there will be a revised edition, with fixed errors and typos as well, I really hope it will come with a better font and searchable text (although bookmarks and hyperlinks would come in handy, no doubt).

@Andrea S — Do you ever plan to do a printed version of Four Against the Great Old Ones? The game is a blast but playing it with a book in hand would be even more immersive! And I know a bunch of gamers I can't introduce the game to as I know they won't play if it's only a pdf on screen. Again: excellent game! :)

LOVING the game so far. Getting my tail kicked. I just came across the Scroll of T'yog for the first time and can not find an entry in the book. Is it not in there or am I having a senior moment :P Thanks for a great game. Can't wait to see the super hero v villains one by the way!

I am working on a superhero version, but it will be a single superhero vs. many. Supers are much more complex than fantasy or horror archetypes and character creation/power lists simply take too much space.

As a totally blind user, I'm a little disappointed to find that the PDF appears to be a scanned image, and is thus inaccessible without OCR, which is unreliable and sometimes leads to very confusing output. Is it possible to put up a text/searchable version of the game rules?

it is not a scanned image, it is a PDF generated with a layout program; however, part of the game uses graphic symbols (squares that you tick off with a checkmark as you play) and movement on a point-to-point map so if you are blind a text version will not be enough to play, I'm afraid.

if I create a text version, will the tables confuse your output? I guess you are using text-to-speech software to read the book?

Typically Lovecraftian that it's the Free Actions section that is obscured. Why give the investigators a break?

So those who already bought the PDF file will be able to download any updated versions free of charge?

(Also, to avoid confusion, I think it would be a good idea to give version numbers to each revision/update like v1.1, v1.2, etc.)

Selectable text would be a neat feature to have.
And I can only second the idea of adding version numbers to the corrected files.
A changelog might be much to expect, but as someone planning to translate the narrative parts for his regular playing group, I know I would really appreciate that as well! (It would make it much easier to keep track of changes and modifications.)
Thank you!

Oh, and just a note right off: the name of Arkham is shown (erroneously) as "Arhkham" on the map.

I am adding an Arial font, text only version. The problem with the text being non selectable is created by the font. It has non standard kerning and layout software sees this as "image". I wish I knew when I designed the book!

Thank you! It really comes in handy, you see.

I just noticed something in this text-only version, though. The end of the Table of Contents seems to be missing.

Also, now that "Arkham" is corrected on the maps, the colour map has another typo: "The Blackwoods" (it's alright on the original map). The map itself looks lovely, by the way!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
