Selected Option:

The Gardens of Ynn is a point-crawl adventure set in an ever-shifting extradimensional garden. Each expodition generates its route as it explores, resulting in new vistas being unlocked with every visit. Included within:

  • Systems for generating locations within the garden, including hothouses, memorial gardens, chess lawns, the Mask Gallery, hypnotic gardens, fleshy gardens and of course the Splicing Vats.
  • 50 monsters tailored to the Gardens, including myconid composters, rose-maidens, rust-bumblebees, floral spiders, bonsai turtles and the enigatic Sidhe.
  • Details for The Idea Of Thorns and other dream-viruses.
  • Tables for generating treasure, Ynnian mutations, and various other useful details.
  • A unique class of Ynnian Changelings, human survivors adapted to the garden.

It's a big garden full of whimsy and delight and surreal perils.

Hello! I picked this up after seeing several recommendations, and it does not disappoint! As a test I ran a 6th-level PC from one of my ongoing campaigns through solo, and they emerged (1) fabulous wealthy and (2) forever changed by their visit to the garden - a complete success for what I'll be using it for.

Just to confirm, the procedure for generating new areas and rolling events is as follows:

(1) Roll 1d20+Depth on Locations and Details
(2) No event occurs in the first turn - therefore no encounters, therefore all locations start devoid of creatures unless the location or details key say otherwise
(3) Each turn after the first roll 1d12 or 1d20 on the Events table depending on PC actions.

So if a party spend absolutely no time looking around and always Goes Deeper, they can get as deep as they wish before any encounters occur? (As long as the location itself does not delay them like eg the Woods taking time to get through)

And does that 'no Events...See more

Same question here, this is my interpretation: if I’m on a new level and I want to get back no events occour but if I want to go deeper I spend a turn to search for a pathway so an event will occour.

That's how it appears to work with the Stygian Library, which has the same structure.

Honestly, letting players get themselves into a lot of trouble by plunging in recklessly is very on-theme for both "dungeons."

Ok so after some research I realize I'm attempting to use a system other than the intended and other than a D&D variant. I'm going to see if I can make this jive with a savage worlds/Deadlands setting. I'll get back with you guys.

Hey there Edward! I've also had my eyes on this book, and Savage Worlds is my system of choice too! In fact I'm not too familiar with AD&D / OSR. Would love to know how it worked out with your Savage Worlds / Deadlands game, and how much tweaking you had to do to make it "jive".
I'm hoping it worked well, because I've been really close to picking up the Stygian Library a few times as well too. :)

Question for the group. I'm running a Deadlands campaign, Horror on Headstone Hill. And there is a place for a wilderness. It has a lot of magick in it. The trees move around causing people to become lost and trapped. I ordered this book and I'm waiting on it. (fyi always get the pdf)
Would it be possible to add this garden to my storyline as a side quest?

Hi to all! Purchased today and I'm reading the rules! :) Quick question: when I'm running blindly and throw a d4-1 if the total is 0 I will remain on the same level different location and if total is 3 I roll a d6-1... Am I right?

I was fortunate enough to get to play an AD&D game that was placed in this setting by a very skillful DM. I have to say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. Obviously he put his own spin/magic into play, but I really enjoyed the basic setting that was presented to us along with his twists: the Sidhe's king was playing with powers that he shouldn't have and brought in the evil that took over the garden (the idea of thorns?). Our party is now working with his daughter to try to defeat this doom that has taken this magical place over. After we played I HAD to get a copy of this, but I PROMISE that I won't read it until the campaign is done. LOL! From what little I've seen, I strong recommend this, if for no other reason, than because of the fantastic and magical setting.

The contents evoke a scary amount of deja vu. Half of my dreams end up in this place.

Do we know if this is intended to use gold=xp rules? I've run across a few that assume silver, so I'm just checking.

The author says to use whatever system you want as long as it's a sort of D&D variant.

i bought this and planned to expose 11 year olds to a different kind of plot (enough with the goblins and orcs and such). rolled a few and took notes, contrived a plot with a bit of existentialism (since the first spot was the shadow theatre - the garden was created by a mistrious entity known as "the player"). played the minutes before the session some early GONG and cathedral's forest of equilibrium. it was amazing. there was a sweet spot after an hour that they didnt quite understood what to do with the knowledge they gained so far from the cliche generic plots they used to play and suddenly they adapted. took the content and enriched it with me basically doing very little as it got a rhythm of its own. cheers!

I'm really enjoying reading this. It's great. :) Just one question: How are we pronouncing "Ynn"? It'll be awful loss of face if I'm discussing this at a garden party one day and someone brings out the chalk ... ;)

I've had a chance to use the Gardens in one of my campaigns and am really loving it! I'd like to add my voice to Shane L in requesting either linking or even just a table of contents to the PDF. It would make on-the-fly generation a bit snappier. Thanks for a great setting!

A suggestion for if/when you have the time and energy: it would be *super* handy if the PDF was linked, eg. you could go to the tables you roll on, and click on the entry and it would jump you to the description.

A couple of people have mentioned layout issues with the pdf. Drop me an email (dyingstylishlyrpgs at gmail dot com ) if you purchased an early version and inadvertently were my proofreader, and I'll send you an updated version.
Proofreading seems to consistantly be my achilles heel. Alas I am poor and bad at it.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
