What Happens after the Apocalypse?

Your ancestors survived thanks to luck, preparation or pure grit. Now it’s time to leave their shelters and start rebuilding the world. But the wasteland has other inhabitants: families with different philosophies and abilities, secretive factions with their own agendas, and bizarre monsters stalking the ruins. As generations pass and your family evolves to suit this new world, what stories will you tell?

In this roleplaying game you’ll build your own unique post-apocalyptic landscape, home to scattered families of survivors. Take control of a family, play the brave heroes that define them, and guide them through the grand sweep of history.

Key features:

  • From grand strategy to desperate struggle. Shift freely between commanding the movements of spies and armies and fighting monsters in a ruined wasteland, using the fast and dramatic rules of the Powered by the Apocalypse engine.
  • A game of histories. Write the saga of your family over generations and draw on your ancestor’s powers, even as you face the unexpected consequences of their actions.
  • Endless variety. 11 family types and 13 character types create hundreds of possibilities, each with its own meaning for the story you’re telling.
  • Hit the ground running. Start playing today with the included quickstart, complete with five pairs of families and characters, story prompts and a sunless world filled with hungry spectres.

Out of curiosity, is there some sort of handout character/family sheets that would work alright just as PDFs? There's a printer friendly version that i've seen floating around (my understanding is that its free) but I don't know if there's a version that would be better as a digital sheet.

Print on Demand option? Now that the physical book is nearly impossible to find now, maybe this would be a good idea.

I want to compare 1st edition with second edition. Where can I find first edition?

Can't review the game here since I got it from differen sources, but this is in my top 3 PbtA scale just by reading it. If a 3rd ed will ever come out (or even some form of revamped hack), I would only streamline the move selection a bit and grant some One2One support? Otherwise, this is inane design. Kudos!

This may be an odd question, but if you had more people than a regular group would this game (or its various hacks) allow for some players to only run one type of playbook or the other? If I had some players more interested in worldbuilding and others that cared less about it, could I stretch the playbooks out to allow for a little more collaboration among more people? Or does that break this series of games?

There's rules support for multiple players being part of the same family - it's certainly possible for someone to be in a 'leadership' role and control the family at the zoomed-out level, and the other players mainly focus on the zoomed-in character level.

Are there any printer friendly versions of the handout sheets? I love how they look, but they'd murder my printer

Just bought the game and I'm excited to take it to my game group! In the starting section, i noticed a reference to something called the "Homeland Sheet" but I can't find it anywhere in the core books or in the handouts. Is it just a blank paper to create a map on?

Yeah, it's just the map you draw for your group. I tend to start with a blank piece of paper, though you can get good results finding a city you like the look of in http://maps.stamen.com/watercolor and printing that out. If you want a sheet with things to bear in mind in world creation, the Titanomachy quickstart has a pretty good one: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/217102/Titanomachy-Legacy-2nd-Edition-Quickstart

Is there going to be a resource listing the basic moves? Flipping through the book for them is a bit annoying

You should be able to download a second file "Legacy_2e_Handout_Sheets_Web.pdf" with the Basic Move sheets. See pages 74 to 77.

Is there any information on when? I'd rather wait a few days if I can get it in print instead, but if we are talking months I'm definitely biting into the sour apple and buy the PDF now. Sadly I had no idea about this game until 10 minutes ago or I would have definitely pledged. Setting seems promising and the player involvement through their houses seems like a fascinating idea.

The basic concept is the same but the book is entirely rewritten. Mechanics have been refined, expanded, and expansion material has been compiled. The presentation and art are entirely new and improved.

Thanks! I purchased the POD version of the first edition, and although the setting and player-facing moves were stellar, I was extremely disappointed with the lack of GM-facing content. Every expansion that's come out since then has looked great: more player-facing stuff to explore. However, none of the items I saw seemed to address the fundamental lack of content for the GM to organize play.

In the original Apocalypse World, there's upwards of 50 pages dedicated specifically to the GM, not to mention all the examples of moves, harm, etc, which is useful for the GM. In the 1st edition of Legacy (which is less than half as long in total), there's less than 30, and a lot of that is padded with examples and art. I understand not wanting to reinvent the wheel, but I couldn't shake the feeling that I hadn't been given a complete set of tools to run a game.

So if the material has been refined, reworked, and expanded, does that mean more attention/material has been devoted to the GM's side of...See more

Zach,
It has now 3 Chapters exclusively for the GM: Running the Game, Hacking the Game and Guide to the Wasteland, with 31 pages of advice and resources. Also, you have now a quickstart scenario, with 18 pages of all you need to start a chronicle right away and with plenty of support material.
Hope it helps!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
