Monsterhearts 2

ADD TO WISHLIST >

By the time they hit adolescence, most people have gotten over their fear of the dark. They spend their midnight hour on gushy phone calls, diary ramblings, and wet dreams. They fall asleep peacefully, assured that the shadows hold no monsters.

But the shadows do hold monsters. You know because you’re one of them. Wickedness dwells within your heart, hunger courses through your veins. High school weighs on you and teen drama puts you on edge, but you have power. What do you do next?

Monsterhearts 2 lets you and your friends create stories about sexy monsters, teenage angst, personal horror, and secret love triangles. When you play, you explore the terror and confusion of having a body that is changing without your permission.

This game is powered by the Apocalypse World engine. It draws inspiration from Twilight, Buffy, Ginger Snaps, The Vampire Diaries, and The Craft.

Monsterhearts is a fantastic game to play but on top of that it’s my very favorite text in RPGs. The book is crystal clear, inspiring for play, and a real pleasure to read.
-John Harper, author of Blades in the Dark

The PDF is 175 pages, offered in both single pages and spreads. Printouts for the game can be found here.

I noticed that The Ghost's flavor text in the Reference Sheet available here and on the BuriedWithoutCeremony site have an error that makes the two F's and the immediately following I in "difficult" seem invisible (i.e. it's rendered as "di cult") when viewed in a PDF viewer, though they're still there, and able to be copied; I've tested in Adobe Acrobat and Firefox's PDF viewer, and both show the same thing.

It's not a huge issue, but it does look off, and it would likely be an issue when printing out the sheet.

What is the minimum age limit of players/dm-s for this game?

I've played v1 of the game as a player and I must say that it got pretty raunchy, but that may have to do more with the players than anything else.

There are sex moves as an integral part of the game. Urban Shadows is similar material, but no sex moves.

watched the CR oneshot and I adore this game, but just so I don't buy this, and then have to go back and something else like twenty minutes later, do I need to buy an apocalypse world book for this, or does this stand alone? I mostly play 5e, or little one page games like radical spin.

No other book is needed. The games rolls are pretty simple, thus if you want to do a game like they played, you'll only will have to buy this game.

Monsterhearts, as any other PbtA, is a standalone game that doesn't need any knowledge of Apocalypse World to be played. The Apocalypse World Engine represents only the formal structure of the game's rules and that structure, which is based on the moves' uses and the use of the playbooks (that in Monsterhearts are called Skins.), is explained in the book. In fact, each game based on the Apocalypse World Engine is a standalone game because although the formal structure is the same, it changes in its characterization. Buying the book means you have accesses to the full set of rules you need. On the author's site, you can also find some additional skins you can use for free that aren't in the book

Thanks for the prompt and very detailed answer. Ill have to consider. Any new material I might have bought for my old Monsterhearts game are now defunct, I assume? Or are they easily transferable?

Jeff, I'm currently considering The Angel. It has some mechanical issues, and I'm not satisfied with its array of moves. But I think the premise & flavour text of The Angel are really promising. It may be released in the future!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
