Don’t run.

Please. I know what I look like. I know you saw me,
with my stitches and punctures and wires.

I know you felt the Fire.

It’s not my fault.

It’s what I have instead of a soul.

It’s how I know I’m alive.

Don’t run! I don’t want to hurt you.

I’m not trying to hurt anyone.

I know it looks like I should.

I know you’re afraid — but so am I!

Don’t run! No, don’t scream! Please… I don’t want to run, either.

You are a pilgrim now, one of the Created. You rose to life from dead flesh or inert matter, under the ministrations of one of your own, or a mad scientist, or perhaps just the power of the Divine Fire. You wander the world, sometimes alone, sometimes in the blessed company of your own kind, driven by memories of events and facts you never knew, all in the service of one Great Work…

…to be human.

Humans don’t make it easy, though. The Divine Fire that animates you burns too bright, blinds people, and scorches the land if you linger too long. It masks your disfigurements and makes you appear human, but that mask slips and people see your hideous, true form. The Pilgrimage is a long, difficult road, but it is yours, and you know, somehow, that the salvation of the New Dawn waits at the end.

This book contains:

  • The complete guide to playing a Promethean in the Chronicles of Darkness
  • Reimagined Lineages and Refinements, and a redesigned system for Transmutations
  • A more detailed approached to the Pilgrimage that presents players with more control over their characters’ path
  • New challenges on the road to humanity, including deranged, greedy alchemists

Note on the Print Editions: Standard Color uses a thinner paper stock than Premium Color, basically the same paper as the Black & White books. This usually means the colors are less vivid, but it also means the price drops a bit per page in the production process. Examples of pages: Premium Color vs. Standard Color.

I really liked the 1st edition book and am VERY interested in this. And I don't mind some typos or gender-stuff either. Is there any other problem with this PDF? Any significant changes from 1st edition?

The "gender neutral pronouns" that some folks are complaining occur in probably 4 paragraphs, so saying that they're "throughout the book" is more than a little disingenuous.

That said: Do note that this an advance PDF. We're collecting typos and other mistakes as people find them and post them to a thread on the OPP forums, at which point they'll be corrected, the PDF will be revised, and at that point it'll be available in print.

As for changes from the 1st edition, there are a few. Extempore and Unfleshed are included as core Lineages, we added a Refinement, and put a lot more attention into the Pilgrimage and how it works in play.

I haven't had any readability problems, nor have I counted the gender-neutral pronouns. But I do find them to be highly annoying. Genderless characters are better as "they" or a neutral usage of "he". Zhe, zir, zhey, whatever, is tacky, antagonistic virtue signalling at its worst.

Great book otherwise though, and I'm glad to have it in my collection.

Off wont fully load. Dozens of pages with just spinning loading symbol. Awful use of gender neutral pronouns making it nearly unreadable. Between the two issues its a total fail.

Its worth noting that the loading error mentioned above was fixed by OPP via an update. The new version of the file works fine. Also, the gender neutral pronouns are used throughout the write up for one of the ten refinements characters may follow. Other than that, from what I can see, they're scattered throughout 4 paragraphs in the first 80 pages of text. I have to say, if you find it nearly unreadable because of that then the problem is on you, not the book.

"if you find it nearly unreadable because of that then the problem is on you, not the book."

Yeah, no. Sorry. I don't think anyone is saying the entire book is unreadable, but the paragraphs that contain those gender neutral pronouns? Yeah, unreadable as hell. A lot of people are having difficulty reading them. It's jarring, tacky, and highly unnecessary. If you find them easy to read, then great! You're the champion. Congrats.

Worth noting that gender is a social construct, not a biological fact like sex is. Promethean is all about the struggle to understand, assimilate, and eventually embody the social AND biological norms of humanity... That notion of 'humanity' taken as a whole covers a LOT of possible permutations. Five or six instances of 'gender neutral' pronouns in a 300+ page book sounds a TAD high for describing that part of the 6+ billions human population, but just.

The gender neutral pronouns found throughout the book make it an EXTREMELY difficult read. Not saying it's bad, nor am I saying everyone will likely feel the same. But for me, it's a problem.

"Throughout the book?" Like, you mean on four different pages, maybe?

No. 6. Right, Matt? And yes, the 6 pages that they're on make said pages an extremely difficult read. Sorry you disagree. The book is lovely, and the art is fantastic, but I'm not a fan of the "ze, zir," etc. being used. I prefer "they" as others have expressed. No biggie. They're your books. Make them how you'd like.

Are Onyx Path really starting to use Tumblerina pronouns? I had my suspicions that they were trying to appeal to that crowd a little too much, lately.

You must be one of those people who still take 1950's pseudoscience as universal laws. "Tumblerina". LOL. Mad about how the word isn't what you thought it was?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
