The Alchemist Shop

Zhang Gue the Elder operates this cluttered shop.  Tall over-stuffed shelves wrap the interior of the building.  The myriad of goods stacked one on top of the other threaten to spill over into the isles.  Large tables in the center of the room are likewise covered in rare and exotic ingredients and spices.  A small parlor in the back of the shop is where Zhang Gue sleeps and prepares some of his secret formulae.  There is also a tiny outhouse in the back for the times when nature calls.

Plumes of smoke billow out of the chimney at this smithy, and the metal clang of hammer on anvil echoes down the street. Hanging in the archway above the work area is suspended a battered old shield with the emblem of the if the blacksmith working away on his metal wares wasn't hint enough to let you know this is a smithy!

A covered open air workshop is dominated by a huge blazing furnace and a stout metal anvil. Gunnar Olafsson operates this smithy and produces quality arms and armor for the city guard and wealthy patrons. There is a box room with a heavy lock holding the doors shut where Gunnar keeps raw materials. His bedchamber has a separate parlor with a sturdy rocking chair where Gunnar enjoys relaxing after a long day of work.

The Khan al-Koh-i-Noor Caravansary sits prominently on the outskirts of town. The rectangular building has a series of rooms that wrap around a central courtyard. Large wooden doors swing out to allow pack animals and carts into the interior courtyard where they can be unloaded, watered and fed. The rooms of the Inn provide private chambers for wealthy merchants and the stables are stocked with enough hay to make soft beds in the courtyard for the attending servants. In the evening, the main doors are locked and guard posted at the entry to ensure the safety of the goods inside.

Curio Shop

Rich red lettering on a field of lucent black spells out Bubulak's Curio Shop. This interesting little emporium is just what every adventurer needs when they arrive in a new town. Gerion Bubulak has goods to sell as well as money to buy all those idols and jeweled daggers you just looted from the hidden frog temple!

Gerion Bubulak operates a thriving curio business. His small emporium has a large bay window that faces the street and houses a colorful display of his finest and oddest wares. The innocent looking sheep combined with the halberd wielding foot soldiers guarding the steps leave little doubt that this place means business. Fish Market

A stone relief marks the main column supporting the roof over the open air fish market. The relief shows two entwined fish with their heads facing each other. The true meaning of this sign is lost to antiquity; however, the clamor of the fishmongers leaves no doubt as to the actual purpose of the fish market!

Along the waterway, near the center of the city is the Fish Market. Each morning the covered pavilion is crowded with throngs of local citizens haggling with sun baked fishmongers over the day's catch. Common fish and eels are plentiful and depending on the time of year, all manner of exotic and strange mussels and crustaceans can also be found. Each of the dozen stalls is rented by an independent fishmonger and each caters to a special clientele.

The sign on the front door shows a pair of tattooed hands with jeweled bracelets and rings, the scent of exotic incense wafts through a high window inviting you inside...

The exterior of this multi-faceted building is painted a dark blue that matches the sky at dusk. Due to the dark color it is difficult to make out the detailing of the exterior, but closer inspection reveals small reliefs carved into the stone depicting the constellations in the sky above. Small Manor House

The emblem of three greyhounds chasing each other in a circle has been the crest of the Della Scala family for as long as anyone can remember. A larger than life fresco decorates an expansive panel above the main door of the Spicemonger's Guildhall.  The colorful artwork depicts a trio of open hands; each hand holds four small orbs.  The hands represent the three powerful families that dominate the guild and the colors of the orbs give a hint signifying which of the three families each hand represents.

Hanging above this raucous tavern's front door from a rusty chain is an old pock-marked iron sculpture. Upside down in the repose of slumber, there are still small areas that show the original bright blue paint of this handsome old leather-winged bat.

This small tavern features a spacious dining area with several tables and a private booth for discreet meetings. Verpa's Shrine

The faithful devotees of the fertility goddess Verpa pack this small temple on her feast days and during birthing celebrations.  A stone relief of the goddess reclining amidst a bountiful harvest and tended to by myriad young animals and children adorns the area above the front entry portico.  

This modest shrine is built out of alternating bands of white and green stone giving it a very unique appearance.  The central portion of the building is a large circle capped with a delicate dome pierced with many small slots that allow shafts of light inside to illuminate the interior during the day and create a spectacularly illuminated effect on the exterior of the dome at night.  There is a covered portico for the devout to congregate outside while being prot...

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
