Trail of Cthulhu: The Black Drop

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Black Drop is a one-shot adventure for Trail of Cthulhu written by Jason Morningstar, the award-winning designer of the Shab-al-Hiri Roach and Fiasco.

Something slowly gathers strength beneath the frozen basalt of the remote Kerguelen archipelago - a monstrous thing once worshipped and then betrayed, a terrible god from the antediluvian past. It’s time has come again, and mysterious forces gather. Will the Investigators usher in its rebirth - or put an end to it forever? Although it could swing toward the Pulp end of things, there’s plenty of windswept nihilism and reliably cosmic horror for any Purist. Adjusted by the Keeper to taste, it will work well for either style.

It features pregenerated characters and extentsive handouts.

Dan Harms reviews The Black Drop

Overall, the Black Drop is a fantastic scenario and one of the strongest scenarios in the Trail line – which, in turn, makes it one of the strongest Cthulhoid RPG scenarios published in recent times. As always, it’s worth getting even if you play Call of Cthulhu instead of Trail, so you can adapt it or take ideas for your own game.

I would love to give this product five stars. It has all the elements you would want from a great Trail scenario. Unfortunately, it really needed a good editor. It is not just typos, although there are plenty. The poor editing results in a lack of cla [...]

Holy cow! This is a beatiful piece of work. Centered around a real place with a slew of real-world informational bits, this bleak but inspired scenario is incredibly well-written. The kernel of the story is fairly simple, but the attention to detail, [...]

Cabable of working well in both purist or pulp modes (or a combination of both) this adventure is set in the remote Kerguelen archipelago (far south in the Indian ocean), which is just about to be abandoned. Oddly, just as the settlers depart, a German [...]

The Black Drop was the first of Jason Morningstar's Trail of Cthulhu adventures. It's available as a 40-page PDF or in the Out of Time compilation of adventures. In either format, it consists of a three-column, gray-scale layout with some nice artwork [...]

This adventure in my mind is worth 5 easily. Its an innovatiove horror story with a clever twist and very lovecraftian feel to it. If you buy it and feel the same way I do, please review it here. Note I try to rate products on a scale of 1-5 so that 2 [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
