VILLAINS AND VIGILANTESTM is back!

In 1979, JEFF DEE and JACK HERMAN created the original VILLAINS AND VIGILANTESTM, the game that brought classic comic book style superheroes into the world of role-playing games. It inspired thousands of crossover fans between comics and gaming, and spawned dozens of imitations.

VILLAINS AND VIGILANTESTM is legendary among role-playing games for its random super-powered character generation system, its accessible, open and fast-paced rules, and the awesome Mighty ProtectorsTM Multiverse campaign setting created by Jeff Dee and Jack Herman.

This latest version of the game- dubbed version 2.1- revives the 1982 version with a few corrections and rules additions. It also features brand new illustrations from co-creator Jeff Dee. Villains and VigilantesTM is a trademark of Scott Bizar, used with permission.

I played this game a lot back in the 80's. It's still one of my favorite rules systems. It really captured the flavor of the comics in that your character can be defeated but it's difficult to kill them. Just like a comic book hero. D&D was quite a bit more lethal. It was rough spending an entire afternoon creating a great character with back story only to have them killed off because of a bad die roll in D&D. The only thing we tweaked in the rules with this system was the HTH combat to hit chance. We used these rules for all kinds of scenarios and campaigns, including a Gamma world style campaign. What was so nice about it was you had all you needed in I think less than 120 pages of rules. So concise! I think what doomed it is once you bought these rules you didn't need anything else especially if you and your friends already had a pile of comic books. Whereas the other RPGs manufactured all kinds of reasons why you needed that next supplemental book encouraging you to spend more and more money. Hat's...See more

I don't want to brag, but my son and I got to play V&V with Jeff Dee at Chupacabracon last year. Just downloaded the PDFs. Probably should get a scenario book or two. Any recommendations for a couple of noobs lol?

Does this include the intro adventure Crisis at Crusader Citadel? I have the book but if it saves me from scanning the maps I'll buy it...

Is there any chance this will be made available in a print version? My ludicrously ancient copy from way back in the day is falling apart.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
