Midgard Worldbook for 5th Edition and PFRPG

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Adventure In a Dark World of Deep Magic!

It is an age of war. Civilization slowly gives way to encroaching wilderness, and once-mighty empires now lie beneath the waves. Only magic and the warmth of hope keeps lights aglow when dread things prowl, and priestly wardings are bent by demonic rage.

The omens are dire. The roads to the shadow realm are open again, and the fey have returned to claim their ancient tribute. In the north the giants prepare for Ragnarok, while the goblins in the west grow restless. In the Crossroads, the shadow of the vampire princes falls across the land. The World Serpent is stirring—and not even all-knowing Baba Yaga can say what will happen next.

Now more than ever, Midgard needs heroes to stand against the dark, driving it back with spell, steel, and cunning!

The 460-page Midgard Worldbook includes:

  • Detailed description of Midgard's empires, cities, and kingdoms, with associated heraldry, rulers, and adventure hooks for each state, large or small
  • Characters from Baba Yaga to the lords of the Dragon Empire, from the honest folk of Zobeck to various elven holdouts of Dornig and the vampire lords of Morgau
  • Full lore on the pantheons of the Northlands, Crossroads, Elves, and others, including divine domain lists, rituals, divine demands, and the various masks and sacred texts—plus rituals and ambitions of the Dark Gods, for the GM's eyes alone!
  • Revised and expanded lore of the planes, history, calendars, and conflicts of the world
  • Forbidden lore of blood magic, void magic, and various dooms and items not meant for players' eyes!
  • And much more!

Start your next campaign off right—put your players on a dark road!

I have to say that I was so disappointed that your newest version is for D&D 5E instead of your original series in PF1E especially after the entire WotC OGL nightmare. Ah, well, but for a crystal ball. I hope you stop this 5E foolery as PF2E is a much, much better game ~ IMHO! Personally, I grew up playing AD&D 1E/2E/3.5E but after 4E and only more reinforced by WotC OGL... I will never purchase another WotC Product - D&D or Magic (and I have $1,000s of dollars in Alpha Beta Cards from MtG) Product again.

Firstly, how could they have known about the OGL scandal 5 years before it happened? Are they a third party publisher or a clairvoyance agency? Secondly, do you like Pathfinder? Wonderful, have fun, but many people and the publisher like D&D, so respect other people's opinions.

SERIOUS REPLY: I will begin by noting that I have purchased nearly all of their old material for PF1E. So, as a now former client, I do believe that I have the right to express my distaste for their choice and switch. After all, I have invested considerable money in prior material and world that no longer fits nor upgrades to PF2E or PF2E-R. So, despite what you think, I am a past client and I do have a voice about their change.

JUST SOME TOUGHTS: It is always wonderful when someone asks you to respect others opinions when they disregard your own. I assume, yes, yes, XXX-u-me, that you know the meaning of IMHO and did you missed the line 'but for a crystal ball' (cf clairvoyance). Am not sure the reason you are so defensive when I was clearly giving my own opinion.

If I have the 5e version, but I want to try Pathfinder 2e, do I need the Pathfinder 1e rulebook for this setting or are the rules close enough where I can stick with my hardcover version for 5E?

Pathfinder 1E is more like AD&D 3.5E. While I have to say I love this game world, I would not go 5E (hold off)... to see whether they flip back to PF2E (after the OGL Nightmare) or wait for them to release their own Black Flag Game System to see if it's more Unique, 5E-Like, or PF2E-like. After they release their Black Flag System, if you do not like their BFS, then I'd go 5E and convert to PF2E.

I have purchased the physical book, and have receipt of purchase. Any chance I can get a copy of the PDF for free?

How is this different from the Midgard Worldbook for 5th Edition?

This version includes a Pathfinder 1st Edition rules appendix, with selected PF1E rule elements in various other chapters. This version does not include the index or the short encounter tables that replaced with PF appendix in the 2021 edition.

The overall page count is about the same.

A truly magnificent book! I could expect no less from Wolfgang Baur and the team.

By the way, if someone from Kobold Press is reading this, are you also going to update the other Pathfinder setting books (Northlands, Southlands, etc.) or are they compatible with the current Midgard Worldbook?

Thank you so much! We do strive to make the setting books stand out!

The Southlands update to 5th Edition is heading to press this summer--preorders are available now on the Kobold Press Store, and the PDF will come to DriveThru when the full set ships (there's a Southlands player's guide and a mini-campaign as well as the Southlands Worldbook).

Thanks for the answer! So I guess that means the older Pathfinder setting books will stay as they are, and are perfectly usable with the current Midgard timeline; that is, I won't have to buy a revised/updated edition of the Pathfinder Southlands book or something later on, if I decide to get it now for that system, correct?

How does this book compare to the original Midgard Campaign Setting, Southlands Campaign Setting and Northlands Campaign Setting books for Pathfinder? If I get this, is it really worth getting the original trinity? And is it possible to get this in a printed format? I'd much rather have a physical copy than a PDF copy.

You can buy a Print version at Kobold Press' website, which includes a PDF copy with each physical purchase.

How does it compare to the old version? There is lots of new stuff, for example a whole section on the Shadow Realm. The timeline has also advanced ten years, which has a few implications. For example the Electoral Kingdom of Krakova was annexed by Morgau and is now a vampire controlled province. Domovogrod has fallen to giants and the survivors are hiding in the hills.

There is some bad however. Those nations that haven't changed much or at all (Dornig, Zoebeck, Magdar, Seven Cities, etc) very obviously re-use the exact same text from the first book. There may be a new paragraph here or there to represent the last 10 years in the meta-plot but for the most part the text is re-used. If this is your first midgard book its great but as someone who has the 2012 Version I was disappointed somewhat.

It doesn't overlap with the Southlands much at all, only explaining about...See more

Unfortunately, I cannot leave a review for this book as I bought it directly from Kobald Press on their website. However, I cannot say enough good about this book! I sling it on Facebook so much that people are probably starting to wonder if I actually work for Kobald Press! I would give it 5 of 5 stars in a second. The PDF quality is amazing. Also, they have an incredibly interactive world map online to supplement the book!

This is a beast of a book. Absolutely enormous and a veritable wealth of information. Wonderful writing and artwork and a first class book. I bought the PDF and then ordered the book version later online from another retailer, I loved it that much. The printed copy itself almost needs a new shelf to sit on. Its thicker than the Pathfinder Core Rulebook! This is a fantastic product that I cant wait to dive into as a DM.

Is there any way purchasers can get higher resolution maps from the Worldbook? The Shadowroad map is difficult to even read the names on without zooming, and zooming in makes it look blocky and pixilated. I'd ideally like to print big versions of the world map and a few of the regional maps as well as the shadowroad/leyline maps.

Yes, you have at least 3 options here.
1) There is an enormous poster map included in the print edition of the Worldbook.
2) The Poster map is also available separately from the Kobold Press store, shipped rolled in a tube.
3) A searchable, zoomable, digital version of the map is available for free on the Kobold site at http://midgardmap.koboldpress.com/

That digital world map is one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. By far that's the best cartography I've seen of a campaign world, when you consider the quality of the art, the ease of use of the tool. It is a delight to move around that map and see the world, and not be bogged down by learning to navigate the system. The layers add a ton of inspiration on their own. Simply amazing. Great, great work!

I just have to say. I was put off by the price of the PDF initially. Most PDFs are between 10 and 20 dollars. But, this book is amazing. I will be running my next campaign in the Midgard setting for sure. It is deep, balanced, and covers all the gambits I am looking for in a fantasy setting. I recommend it to anyone who is looking for a departure from the forgotten realms setting.

There is a section about the Ghoul Imperium included under the Dark Kingdoms, as well as the vampire cities etc. The Worldbook is quite in-depth.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
