Star Trek Adventures Quickstart

ADD TO WISHLIST >

Welcome to your new assignment, Captain. Your continuing mission, to explore strange new worlds, seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no one has gone before…

“We’ve received a message from Narendra Station that a runabout  called the Susquehanna has gone missing in the Carina Nebula, deep within the Shackleton Expanse. The Susquehanna was  investigating an unusual alien signal that originated from the nebula  when all contact was lost. We have been ordered to enter the  nebula, find the runabout, and determine the origin and cause of the alien signal. Starfleet has also advised that Romulan and Ferengi ships have been sighted in the region, so we should exercise  caution since they may well have detected the alien signal as well.”

This is a FREE 30 page Quickstart for the Star Trek Adventures Roleplaying game, and contains an introduction to the main game’s core rules, plus “Signals” a self contained adventure with six pre-generated characters for you to enjoy.  You will also need:

  • At least two 20-sided dice (d20) per Player, and several
  • 6-sided dice (d6) to serve as Challenge Dice
  • A set of six chips or tokens for Momentum
  • A set of twenty chips or tokens for Threat
  • The pre-generated characters found in the back of the booklet.

Inside the main Star Trek Adventures core book you’ll find:

Star Trek Adventures takes you to the Final Frontier of the Galaxy, where new discoveries await keen explorers of Starfleet. Your duties may take you to the edges of known space, or to Federation colonies in need, to the borders of neighbouring galactic powers or into the eye of interstellar phenomena. A new threat looms from across the Gamma Quadrant, as it is confirmed by Commander Sisko and his crew that the Dominion, led by the Founders, represent a significant threat to the Alpha Quadrant. Tension is already high in the region of Bajor and Deep Space 9, as the Maquis continue to act against the Cardassian-Federation peace treaty, with Captain Janeway and the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager preparing for their mission in the Badlands. It is a volatile time for the Federation and new crews have never been in higher demand.

The main cover image on this product page is wrong - it uses the core rulebook's cover image (from here: https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/214552/Star-Trek-Adventures-Core-Rulebook), instead of the Quickstart Guide's actual cover image (here: https://www.modiphius.net/collections/star-trek-adventures/products/star-trek-adventures-quickstart-guide).

Am I missing something in the Quickstart or can I just not find the rules for Healing? There's a medic so I am guessing the rules are in the Quickstart somewhere but for the life of me I seem to be missing that section.

I tried to leave a review, but the option is missing for me, so I'm leaving a comment instead.

I already had bad experience with 2d20 (it's one of the worst systems I've played) but as I'm a huge Star Trek fan, I thought I’ll check this out and maybe I'll like it. Wow, was I wrong. It's even worse than I feared.

- What's with all this black? My eyes fall out by reading it. Even if there was an option to turn off the background (there is none) it would be too much white. I wouldn't buy a printed book with all black or all white background, so this one is already a no-go for me.
- The system is still as bad as I remember from another 2d20 game, I won't get into details, I really don't like it. If the other aspects were great, I might overlook it, but they aren't.
- The adventure is really bad. Yes, this is a free product, but I have no idea how a Star Trek adventure should look like. After reading this I get the impression that they are bad / useless, and I shouldn't bother....See more

I completely agree that this "adventure" is...it's BAD.

I wonder if there was a longer version of it, but they needed to keep the page count down so they chopped out entire sections of "plot" to condense it.

Spending Momentum isn't so bad, once you play the game (I was able to during Free RPG Day at my local game store today). It works the same way Inspiration points in 5th edition D&D does, and similar to how Hero Points in Pathfinder 1st ed worked. That doesn't bother me. Perhaps watching an actual play on Youtube might help convince you otherwise.

But the utterly nonsensical adventure is a real MAJOR turn-off.

I, too, would love a version of this that was printer friendly. It would make it easier for my 52-year old eyes to absorb.

Honestly, I get what you folks at Modiphius are trying to do here, and the product LOOKS stunning. I just cannot read it well. I have the core book in print version, because I like Star Trek and wanted to try some iteration of the 2d20 system. Again, love the way the book looks, but cannot read it. The headache it induced sent me off for a different 2d20 book to pick up (in my case, Conan) that was easier on the eyes.

That said, I like Star Trek, and I would like to buy and support that line. I cannot, however, justify buying books that cause me physical pain to read. I'd like to believe that this is a case of just because you CAN do something cool doesn't always mean you SHOULD. ;)

After reading mostly negative comments about the 2d20 system on forums, I previously delved into the 2d20 Conan and was pleasantly surprised and my players love the system. In my experience, its charms only emerge in practical implementation. From reading through the core book, Star Trek seems to be a slightly more flexible implementation of this system adapted to a sci-fi setting. The 6 core stats and 6 Disciplines are flexibly linked together depending on the situation. For example, if a PC wants to manipulate a Warp Drive they would use the Engineering Discipline but the core stat they link it to depends on the task in some cases it requires 'Daring' if the engine room is on fire, 'Fitness' if they need to weld heavy plates onto a failing warp drive or 'Reason' if they want to build a new component from the ground up etc. Additionally, success beyond what's required for task completion provides 'momentum points' which can be spent by the PC or pooled for the party to use in succeeding at other tasks that are...See more

"STA QSR is for tablet only, not for print," because nothing keeps the group focused like a GM screwing around with an iPad. He can check his email when he gets a chance. While he's at it, the players could all just use "dice apps" on their phones. Better yet, everyone could all Skype in. From respective Moms' basements. In their underwear... Ah, screw it, we'll play xBox when we wake up.

The PDF files like these are not intended to be printed out, read electronically. The sections that are intended to be printed out such as handouts i.e. the character sheets, have white backgrounds.

I'd agree that an ink friendly version would be useful for those like me who would want a paper copy.

Other wise it looks fine to me. The PDF follows the design of the original core book, on my iPad it clear and readable.

That's great if the QSR has the same layout than the Core book. I am interested in this game BUT I need a great Voyager expansion book!! TOS, DS9, STE and in a little measure, TNG, are not my preferred ST universes.

The cruddy production (saturated colors on a black background) is so toner/ink robbing that it's worth a review. Seriously, is everyone in game production so far on the spectrum that they can't grok that tabletop RPGs are not typically run from electronic devices? Keep your unusable promo: I can keep running "Far Trek" or d6 Space, both free and both quite excellent.

Wow!! What a harsh comment!! The STA QSR is for tablet only, not for print. It's no use to bump off this new game. You like to play ST with other games, it's great. So why such rage??

As a free product we want people to experience the core book as they will get it, the relevant sections that need to be printed have been provided as printer friendly items (including the character sheets) whilst the rest is as you would find the core book to be.

Chris, here's the issue though. I would like to run STA at a convention next year. I'd love to be able to print out a few quick starts to either keep at the table or hand out to potential new players. With a low ink version would allow me to do that. I really don't want to be passing my iPad around the table for others to reference.

That's why we gave the handouts and characters sheets as printer friendly items as usually players don't need more than this if you're teaching the game. We are considering it but the design team are stretched getting priority projects finished and doing a printer friendly version is not as simple as turning off a layer and pressing save. It's several days work followed by approvals and changes, edits etc. At the moment we're getting the next major Star Trek books completed in time for launch. In the meantime the core book is exceptionally cheap and includes a full printer-friendly edition :-)

Obviously you missed Darren's point.... He wants to print out the whole starter book so those interested can take it with them and possibly buy your full version.... Not hard to understand his intent.....

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
