Critical Role: Tal'Dorei Campaign Setting

Critical Role has taken the roleplaying world by storm. Now, you can join the adventure!

Until now, the wondrous and dangerous lands of Tal’Dorei have been the sole stomping grounds of the show’s adventuring company, Vox Machina. But now, you can explore these realms in a tome from the pen of Game Master Matt Mercer himself!

Will you find one of the revered Vestiges of Divergence or perhaps discover part of the Chroma Conclave's legacy? Can you help the Ashari in their sacred charge to prevent the elemental vortices from overwhelming the world, or will you find yourself embroiled in the machinations of the Clasp?

This setting book takes an in-depth look at the history, people, and places of Tal’Dorei, and includes new backgrounds, magic items, and monsters for the Fifth Edition rules.

The availability of this book off of Amazon is TERRIBLE in Germany. Delivery time is estimated in literally 1-2 months. As such, I'd love to be able to purchase this to be printed from DriveThru, but PoD is not available for this. Will this change anytime soon?

Since the “preview”is just a map, can anyone tell me if this is actually a campaign (like Titansgrave), or is this just a source book only?

As I've gathered from Youtube-videos, this is a source book only, having some class options, feats and plot hooks. No set campaign though. To be fair, what should they take? The whole campaign clocked in at around 5 years of weekly play after all...

Does anyone know of a print/pdf bundle anywhere?

Is there a way to get both this and the printed version for a discount?

Any plans for a Fantasy Grounds conversion?

I e-mailed Doug from Smiteworks about it. He told me that he's going to reach out to the folks at Green Ronin.

For someone not familiar with the show is there anything about this setting that's unique enough in concept that would be worth giving it a look? With so many great other settings out there that push new ideas I just want to know what separates this from the generic Fantasy bucket.

Issues with previews, can't see them in two different browsers. Just me?

Not just you. No preview loading for me either.

And GR, you might want to be less cagey about what this is a setting -for-. At the moment it sounds good but I have no context for what I might do with it.

They're not really being all that cagey. It's under their "5E Compatible" sub-section (literally the only thing there at the moment), and the pop-up info and the sidebar have the system as "5e-compatible." Also, since the show Critical Role (which is where this setting originates) uses 5E, the answer should be pretty obvious.

Just saying, the info is there if you look for it.

As a slightly interested browser, it's not my job to look for it in odd corners of the page. Much better if the description, the core of the page, actually told us what Critical Role is and what the book will do for us. (I did poke around and do a search, but that's a lot of effort for a general web visitor.)

Well, the description has been updated, so I guess you got your wish. However,

A) Since I imagine most people interested in purchasing this product will do so because of the show (what with Critical Role being probably the most watched D&D live-play program on the net), I figure they'd either already know the rules system, or easily figure it out.

B) Having recently acquired a copy of the book myself, I can tell you that most of the information within is just lore, thus system-neutral. There are some new options and items, and some npc/monster stat blocks, but about 2/3rds of the material could be used with any system.

C) Again, none of this information was hidden. It would take maybe 30 seconds, tops, to figure this out (you wouldn't even need to leave the product page). So when you say, "it's not my job to look for [this information] in odd corners of the page," I can't help but read that as, "I'm too lazy to actually go looking for this piece of information...See more

The book comes with a poster map of the setting. It did not upload correctly when the PDF first went live but should be fixed now. If you purchase it, check your download library and it should be there.

P.2 has a partial map, and the gazeteer has a bunch of disparate partial maps but you know what is missing? An actual useable, composite map. Why on earth would GR/Matt Mercer not include an actual setting map?

I agree a map would be great to have.

Who on earth sells a campaign book without a proper map?

Awesome! And the map is really nice. I retract my critique!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
