Blood and Bone is a dark and gritty fantasy roleplaying game.

Play as a ragtag company of sellswords, a savage band of raiders, or a gang of outlaws and thieves in the unique and deadly world of Ossura.

Create rich characters, driven by human desires in stories fueled by war, intrigue, and exploration.

Mechanics:

The core mechanic is a simple, streamlined d20 based system -- easy to learn and easy to use.

Character customization is the heart of the system. There are no professions or classes, instead, characters define themselves through an expansive list of unique Traits.

Half the book is a campaign setting, which can be easily used with any other roleplaying system.

Could you please say something about the magic system, which isn't in the quickstart rules. Who can use magic? What are the limits of magic powers? Mechanically, how does magic work (spell slots, magic points, etc)? Thanks!

Absolutely! So called magic in in the setting is referred to as Blood. It can be gained thought the Traits that characters gain as they level, if the take the first Trait at character creation. It has the power to destroy and repair flesh, and even raise the dead. Mechanically it functions like all other Traits, giving access to abilities, granting perks, and empowering characters. Characters that use Blood do have a magic point system, called Power. Blood abilities frequently cost one or two Power. Power be replenished through rest, or from nearby deaths.

Now here is a question, when creating a campaign with Blood and Bone does a DM need to make all the NPC selfish, greedy, or unpleasant? Can he encourage his players to consider making characters who are generally decent people, though not without flaws, and actually have it that there can be heroes?

Mainly, is one required to make things as grim and cynical as Game of Thrones/A Song of Ice and Fire? I am fine with low fantasy which is a bit gritty, but not if it has to be played like that series.

The players can absolutely be good characters, and villains can certainly be evil. Blood and Bone simply encourages steering away from binary absolutes in favor of human motivations. Your game can be as dark (or light) as you want, the system just suggests that both of those are shades of grey.

Is there a chance the PDF will actually be optimized? 300+mb for 90 pages, no bookmarks, makes it kind of a pain.

Hey Jeff, thanks for pointing that out. We've put up an optimized version that is about 30mb.

Could we get a look at some more of the interior art? That's the one thing stopping me from buying this book right now. When I look at the Kickstarter, the art you guys show here is way better than the art shown 2 years ago.

Certainly, we'll put more up. Fortunately we had the budget to use superior art to that shown on the Kickstarter.

How gritty/deadly is the combat? Is it standard d20 fare with roll vs AC and do damage to an abstract pool of HP? I like the look of this, but I'm trying to decide whether to get the full product or the setting-only product (I prefer a deadlier style of combat).

It's inspired by classic d20, but, that said, is its own beast. Damage isn't rolled -- succeeding on an attack results in a "damage" called a wound. Most characters have around three vitality, or "health". We'll be putting up a free quickplay soon.

Ah, sounds good. I prefer wound levels to generalized hit points.

You are offering the campaign world/setting separate from the rule-system. Will you be offering the rule-system separate from the campaign world?

We don't intend to offer a stand alone rules system at this time.

Sounds interesting. Love the artwork. Though I am not sure what it has to offer in comparison to other gritty systems out there (like any vanilla version of d100 for instance)

Thank you! Even if you feel one gritty system is similar tot he next, the setting of Blood and Bone is truly unique and can be purchased independent of the mechanics.

Off course. But I was genuinely curious about what makes the system unique :)

I really need to know more about the "d20 based system" before I'd ever drop $20 on a product.

Could you give some details on your web page (or in the above description) so that we know how this system works?

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
