Gratuitous Anime Gimmick

ADD TO WISHLIST >
Selected Option:

Magic. Aliens. Catgirls. Giant robots. Powering up, yelling, and then shooting a laser beam out of your hands. Gratuitous Anime Gimmick delivers exactly what it implies: gratuitous anime gimmicks. Crunchy where it needs to be, rules light where it doesn't. Sturdy but flexible. Packed full of cliches, tropes, and stereotypes. Don't take if nursing or pregnant.

And it only uses d10s. Ridiculous.

GAG is an anime flavored tabletop roleplaying system. Everything you need to get started is here, including:

  • 9 classes, including Magical Girls, Mecha Pilots, and the generic protagonist of every harem anime ever. Each class is built so that its fundamental gameplay and powers create the feel of the genre they're meant to evoke
  • 11 races like 10 ft. tall oni, shapeshifting tanuki, and an empire of small but squishable frog invaders
  • A combat system where remarks and insults cut just as deeply as swords
  • A haphazardly thrown together bestiary with robots and ninjas and motorcycle gangs
  • You can turn people into cats
  • A bunch of magical artifacts and technological wonders, including stuff what makes you wrestle good
  • DM tips and a basic world setting, based on fictional modern fantasy Japan

Cheers, we have here in germany a anual event called "Gratis Rollenspieltag" which translates to free Roleplaying day. Mostly Publisher give free stuff to shops and other roleplaying locations. But it is also possible just to register at your local game shop and provide a round of your favorite rpg. I very much like GAG. Also I do not believe I could make it work for longer campaigns, one shots schould be fine. So I decided to host a session of GAG at my local Gamestore. I would like to ask of you Mr. Morgan if you can provide me with some help. For example I would need a list of all cross class Gimmicks, since I only have around 4 hours to play and need 2,5-3 hours for my planned adventure. I somehow need to speed up the character creation process. Searching for the perfect Gimmick will take to much time. i don't wanna make pregen characters, that would hurt the picture I am trying to bring across. I want to give the players as much freedom as possible. Maybe you can share some insight in how I can...See more

Hmm, so question. You say that Mecha are capable of otherwise impossible feats of strength, but physically how much stronger are they than your average player character? How many pounds, tons, etc. can they lift?

I'm totally shooting from the hip on this one, so feel free to discard it if it doesn't sound right--but I'm going to say a couple of tons, at the very least, without having to roll for it. I haven't crunched any GAG related numbers in a while, but I picture a mech lifting a car without much difficulty. It could probably lift more, but you'd have to roll Powerful for it.

When I start working on new content, I'll take a second look at it. I'm kicking myself a little for not putting that in the book the first time, so it'll end up as either official errata or an addition in the next book.

Are there any big differences in 1.01?

A few terminology changes, mostly. The most significant change is that the dice penalty for having lower HP is removed, eliminating the death spiral effect on player characters. This is also outlined on the 1.01 character sheets, if you don't want to go through with downloading the whole book all over again.

hey there Matt, i just a quick look at your book and i saw the few class/archetypes available, are you planning to make more classes because the most obvious class is missing : Idolu.
and also an other question : for the threats stats, were you inspired by Wushu ? it looks a bit like it with the "threat level" and the hp/chi points.

I am actually planning to release more gimmicks and classes later! There was a few that I either couldn't hash out all the details of in a satisfactory manner just yet, or didn't fit the "feel" of the current classes. The current plan is to integrate idol-style gimmicks into a future version of Magical Girl, since trying to live a normal life while also being a huge celebrity that affects millions of people emotionally fits into the duality of that class. The idol stuff still needed some work, though, so I've left it on the backburner until I've got it cleaned up better.

I've actually not read Wushu yet. A pretty significant number of the Shonin's chi powers were an attempt to imitate DBZ, specifically, with a few other archetypes thrown in (like crazy sword fighting). I had to fight myself over whether to go with chi or ki. The threat rating in the bestiary was actually a last minute addition; a previous test version of the book didn't have any sort of challenge rating or anything, and...See more

Small typo in the table of contents: "Curses/ransformations"- pretty sure that's missing a T. Looks promising though.

Hey, thanks! The typo should be fixed for future downloads, and I managed to edit the print version before it got out.

Rules question: How are ties in initiative resolved?
Rules suggestion: Since initiative isn't affected by any abilities, gimmicks, etc. you can just use a deck of cards, ala Savage Worlds. It's quicker, there are no ties, and the GM doesn't have to write anything down. For Usagi, draw 2 cards and take the best.

If it's between two players, let 'em work it out themselves or roll for it. If it's between a player and the DM, give the player the edge. I lean toward giving players the benefit of the doubt as much as possible.

It's on the way. Not sure how long the process usually takes, but it's been sent off for validation. I'm hoping to have print versions available in the next week, at most.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
