Unknown Armies Third Edition Book One: Play [digital]

ADD TO WISHLIST >

An occult game about broken people conspiring to fix the world.

It's about getting what you want.

Unknown Armies presents magick as it might exist in a world informed by crime fiction and secret histories, as twisting wrinkles in reality created by greater and greater risk, sacrifice, and obsession. As a player, you are confronted by the consequences of your character's actions, and challenged by the implicit threat of a world shaped by the will of those who want something more than you do.

It's about being relentlessly, hopelessly human.

Book One: Play is the book for players. It details:

  • Obsession and identity.
  • All of the rules for resolving actions.
  • The central shock gauge mechanic.
  • How to avoid fights, and how to deal with them when you're dragged into them anyway.
  • The magick of adepts and avatars.
  • Gorgeous full-color art and layout.

Created by Greg Stolze and John Tynes, Unknown Armies presents an entirely original yet disturbingly familiar approach to mystery, horror, and action in roleplaying games.

This digital product includes PDF, ePUB, and MOBI files.

Is this book stand-alone or does it require books two and three to run?

You need Book 1 and Book 2 to have a complete set of mechanics.

Book 3 is an encyclopedia of game-focused setting material. Invaluable for the GM, but not strictly necessary.

If you like setting material I actually recommend book 4 and 5 over book 3.

Book 3 is literally a glossary of a ton of different ideas for the game. If you like your Lore in the smorgasbord style, as I do--just a list of ideas that you can pick and choose as you like--Book 3 is pretty great. But if you want extra splats, factions and NPCs, you're better off skipping it for Book 4 and 5, which include additional avatars and adepts.

But yes, you only need book 1 and 2 to play. If you're mulling over a hard copy, and counting your cash, my advice is--get the first book in hard copy and the second as a pdf. There's not much in Book 2 you're going to need to flip to in a hurry for a rules check.

Was fixed the next day. Apparently DTRPG wasn't downloading the full pdf.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
