Welcome to the new Alternity Science Fiction Roleplaying Game, the game where you get to create your own future! The game shares a name and heritage with a popular RPG from the 1990s, and is a game that embraces all genres of science fiction, from low-tech post-apocalyptic wastelands to ultra-tech space opera. 

This Beta Test Edition contains the latest snapshot of the Alternity game rules still in development. In it, you'll find an overview of the Alternity rules, an adventure scenario, and 6 pregenerated characters so you can get straight to the action. We've included a full color version and one that's a bit more printer-friendly, if that's your thing. We've also included an initiative tracker you can print out to keep your game running smoothly.

The initial release includes The Magellan, the sample adventure used in our first playtest, appropriate to run for groups of seasoned RPG players. The release also now includes Escape from the Institute, an introductory adventure that walks the players and GM through the process of character creation and running the game.

Update: We have also now included the Thunder Run adventure! A heavy metal death ride through a post-apocalyptic wasteland, Thunder Run showcases a second sci-fi genre possible in the Alternity game system. This short adventure includes its own set of 6 pre-generated PCs, too.

This packet does not yet contain the full rules for character generation, as we want to focus on how well the system plays, and we'll include those rules in a later update. Also, please note that nothing in this document is final, and any element may be changed at a later date as we continue to iterate and incorporate feedback. As we make updates to the system, we'll also update the files in this title, so you can always get the latest playtest document.

About the Alternity Team: The three Sasquatches are David Noonan, Richard Baker, and Stephen Schubert. Together, they bring over 50 combined years of RPG experience. Rich was one of the primary designers on the original Alternity game back in the 1990s, along with Bill Slavicsek, who is also helping out with this relaunch. As a company, Sasquatch Game Studio created the Primeval Thule sword and sorcery campaign setting for multiple game systems (available on DriveThruRPG), the Princes of the Apocalypse adventure for 5e, and the Ultimate Scheme board game.

Anyone know the latest progress on this project as I can't seem to see anything recent on the publisher's website or Kickstarter........can't help thinking it has died.

Their latest update was in mid January. They seem to be almost finished.

I just wanted to say, I backed the Kickstarter campaign (Expedition level) because I loved the original Alternity so much, and on paper the new rules looked great. However, after finally getting around to a play test, I am worried I may have made the wrong decision.

With myself in the GM spot, my group and I just completed the "Escape From The Institute" adventure. Even thought the adventure itself was slickly designed, we came away with a number of issues that left us somewhat disappointed.

Our group found the new combat system to be very slow. The new initiative system sounds like a fantastic idea, but is a pain to keep track of. Furthermore, weapons either have minimal effect or are overpoweringly powerful. In comparison to the original system, the new damage track is functional, but my whole group found it terribly clunky and unrefined. Another issue was with attack rolls, it is just as easy to hit a fast dodge character than it is a slow moving tank, where's the resistance...See more

Avoiding hit is in the Dodge skill now, and requires use of the dodge manuever, which slightly reduces your other action speeds; looking at it, someone with a decent dodge skill can actually be pretty hard to hit. I can't comment about the other things because they're "in play" kinds of things. And I can promise you that a lot of people really dislike roll-low; I've seen a fair number of people who flat out won't play roll-low games.

I have already have the alpha tester packet, and I've backed for Everything on KS or I would have left a bigger tip -- aiming to keep it all in the KS budget :)

This used to be a D&D system game. Is it still D&D or has that changed.

No, it is its own system. It used to be a unique system (not D&D) that used a d20 plus a control dice to determine a level of success. The new system utilizes something similar, but instead of comparing the result to your character's skill, you compare it to a Difficulty Class.

Alternity has always been its own system even when produced by WOTC and TSR.
They moved away from any DND system you maybe familiar with even D20.

So, how long are you planning to keep the beta stage open? I'm asking because it might take a few months for me to gather my group of old gamers (and specifically people with Alternity experience) and I really want to contribute. Thanks

These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
