Bloody Hooks

System: Any, contains no rules-specific material.

A collector of horror movie memorabilia is found dead in his home and his collection is missing some key elements. A new homeowner discovers there may still be someone in the old bomb shelter buried under his backyard. A late night infomercial turns horrific as the host demonstrates his new gizmos that make vivisection so easy! A man in a vegetative state suddenly gains the power to prevent the doctors and his wife from "pulling the plug". Someone or something is repossessing transplanted organs from their recipients.

Bloody Hooks is a collection of short adventure hooks and ideas suitable for modern horror gaming. Each entry is short, usually no more than a paragraph, containing only the strange premise, the hook, designed to spark your imagination and inspire you to craft a suitably diabolical and horrific scenario for your players.

Despite the low price, this is a quiality product. You get a goodly number of clearly written, system-generic scenario seeds. Best of all, they avoid religious overtones entirely, which is something this genre is inclined to tread harshly on. [...]

As is expected with the better adventure hook compilations, I found about half of the scenarios on offer here to my liking, and the rest may be useful with a little alteration. For example, "The Projectionist" (a captive audience at a horror [...]

A series of short (1 to 2 paragraph) un-statted story hooks in the genre of psychological horror and weird events, as well as a useful sidebar of minor disturbing events. The hooks without explanations were better than those with, I thought. Readers [...]

There is something to be said for the inspiration for Bloody Hooks, by Big Finger Games. I imagined the author sat in front of their television, swapping DVD after DVD in a darkened room, sifting through scary movie plot after scary movie plot taking [...]

Bloody Hooks is a short 6 page pdf containing a number of horror-related plot hooks. It's suitable for use in most horror games, although in particular for modern horror, rather than fantasy horror since most of the plot hooks provided contain elements [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
