Using the most up-to-date rules text, the BattleMech Manual has been designed from the ground up to cater to the BattleTech player wanting to engage in an all-’Mech battle. Includes a variety of optional rules, terrain and more. Welcome to the most table-usage-friendly BattleTech rulebook ever published!

BattleMech Manual VS. Total Warfare

The BattleMech Manual is an alternate presentation of the BattleTech rules as seen in Total Warfare, not a new edition. Most of the rules as published in both books are the same, though the BattleMech Manual rewords many of them for clarity or reduced word count. It also incorporates all relevant errata as of its publishing date.

Additionally
, the Manual adds rules and items of equipment from sources other than Total Warfare, such as combat-dropping BattleMechs and expanded terrain options. As many players regularly use such rules, the Manual includes them to provide a one-stop BattleMech play experience. However, some of these rules appear in a simplified or stripped-down form compared to their original form, in the interest of presenting a taste of the wider BattleTech ruleset but not overwhelming the reader with complexity.

BattleTech Survey: We've an extensive BattleTech survey we've launched. If you finish the survey, you'll receive $5 off code for use at store.catalystgamelabs.com. The survey can be take here: http://tinyurl.com/BattleTechSurvey
Important Note: The BattleTech Manual Open Beta will not provide a free upgrade to the final version when it releases.

Does this have the Super Heavy Mech rules in it??

So they want me to pay money to do a survey and tell them what is wrong with their book even though I already own total warfare?

Nothing has changed in the rules at all, it's still a freaking monster and most people don't want to play it. They would be better off streamlining the rules instead of making another rule book to explain the rules.

No, actually they're going to pay you... with a 5 dollar off coupon for this book. The fact that the BattleMech ruleset is such a monster is exactly why they published this book... streamline and clarify.

This kinda book (in it's final form) is the sort of book I'd be interested in, having not bought into the tabletop game in any form thus far. So for the newcomers, this is great. Looking forward to the eventual Introductory Box Set reprint. :)

Including the Vs. Total Warfare section in the previews would be immensely helpful.

Indeed... right now that, coupled with the "The BattleTech Manual Open Beta will NOT provide a free upgrade to the final version when it releases" makes it pretty much a no sell.

Agreed. I can't possibly see what this would give me that I can't do with Total Warfare, and I'm not spending $10 to find out.

Well, it could be 5 $ if you buy it via their shop and answer the survey (provided you don't spend those 5 bucks on something else that is). You actually do get some flow charts and explanations that you don't see in TW, but all in all I really think it's not really that attractive.

The quirks table is what makes it worthwhile. I've been wanting an official and relatively complete list for ages, and this provides. I did the survey, and basically paid $5 for that table :)

The problem I see with that is the part about not getting the final version. If that's the case, I'd rather wait for that final version and see if it interests me. This is not exactly what I would call an "open beta" either, TBH.

I'm not sure that they were so from the start, but I might have missed it.

PURCHASER
I think the intended audience might not be those that know TW inside and out, but rather new players.

More like intermediate players really. For real beginners there would be things like Sword and Dragon and Battletech Introductory Box Set. This book is IMO for those who want more, but don't want to bog them selves with full combined arms mess :)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
