Blue Rose: The AGE RPG of Romantic Fantasy

Watermarked PDF
$24.95

A decade ago Blue Rose shook up the RPG scene with its vision of romantic fantasy and inclusive gaming. Now the world of Aldea returns in a new edition using the Adventure Game Engine (AGE), the popular rules that power the Fantasy AGE and Dragon Age RPGs. This beautiful, full-color book contains everything needed to create and tell stories of heroic envoys of the Sovereign’s Finest as they protect their homeland of Aldis from threats like the shadowy Kingdom of Kern and the fanatical Theocracy of Jarzon, as well as monsters and artifacts from the cruel reign of the Sorcerer Kings. Aided by the rhydan—their psychic animal allies—the champions of the Kingdom of the Blue Rose safeguard the light of the world against the power of Shadow.

Will you answer the Sovereign’s call?

I remember someone saying that there was a psychic class in this game. Is there actually a psychic class or is it just a fancy version of the mage class from the Fantasy Age core book?
Customer avatar
Steven J February 03, 2017 6:41 am UTC
There is no psychic based class. The classes are Warrior, Expert and Adept. The Arcana system has more of a psychic feel but it is still Arcana and not Psychic power

You can build an Adept on solely Psychic Arcana, if you want. But it can also have more overt powers of a decidedly non-psychic bent.

So what does this book do aside from changing the system to use 3D6 instead of a D20?

Kills the lich king, replaces him with his 7 lieutenants all vying for control of kern.
Adds new rhydan options.
Flesh warping is no longer inherently sorcery.
alot of good info on aldis.
alot of info that was in the world of aldea supplement.
new rules for relationships that foster positive and negative intimacy with npc's or other pc's.
and the specializations can help player's settle into their roles quite a bit better
and some good gm's stuff for running blue rose in different genres (from dark fantasy, to swashbuckling adventure, to narnia-esque coming of age stories)
I haven't done a cross reference but this is a corebook so it's more concerned about updating the setting, setting the tone and helping the narrator figure out how they want to run the game

Changes all mechanics basically.

Hi, I have a question. Is it stand alone or still required Fantasy AGE core rulebook?
Customer avatar
Bobby J January 26, 2017 3:07 pm UTC
Me too! Also, I know there are printed copies available from GR, but any chance on a POD version here?
Customer avatar
Steven J January 26, 2017 3:53 pm UTC
Just need the Blue Rose book. The Fantasy Age Bestiary may also be useful if you would like more threats for your heroes but also isn't required.

The print edition has not been released from Green Ronin yet. Odds are if they do a POD version it won't be for a very long time.

I'm curious about this book... I love the AGE system and am currently playing and GMing in a few Fantasy AGE games. Is this compatible with the typical Fantasy AGE books? I read somewhere that the magic system is totally different and a lot of aspects would force Blue Rose to be treated as a separate entity rather than an addition to the Fantasy AGE rules. Would it be a waste to buy this if I already have all the Fantasy AGE books? I assume a lot of it is the same content, like explaining the abilities and focuses. Can anybody shed any light on this for me?

The basics are pretty much the same. There are some changes to the classes (all classes have scaling armor, expert has some social alternatives to certain combat abilities, and the adept is much less focused on offensive magic by default), but the basics of the game, including many of the talents, will be pretty much familiar. That said, there are a lot of new options, such as new specializations, races, a few backgrounds, enemy monsters and et cetera. A lot of those are transferable between normal Fantasy AGE games and Blue Rose games without any real changes. The one exception is the magic system for players, where you either pick the Blue Rose version or the standard version, and apply that to all players (for monsters and NPCs, it doesn't really matter which one you use).

I'm glad they did that. I have a few questions if you don't mind.
1. Which rule set do you think has more "crunch" to learn. I have the old book and I have (but never read ) the AGE Dragon Age Book.
2. Does this book keep the same feel as the old one. It would seem so from the art, in fact it seems more intense. Does this book have the same devotion to portraying gays as the old one or does it put it on the back shelf.
3. I know stay with me. Has this book defined better what a Rhydan is? Meaning in the old book there were the cats you could play but also wolves and even by the books standard Unicorns were Rhydan.
Thanks.
I'm asking all of these because I've been burnt recently on Kickstarter projects.
Customer avatar
Steven J January 18, 2017 10:59 pm UTC
Crunch I would say the AGE have a little more. The feel is still the same (new system better supports it). The setting is still LGBT friendly and does a better job on inclusion ( the quiet Knight are amazing). There are far more Rhydan options including guidelines for making you own. Hope that helps.

There is more crunch in this new edition than older one?... I don't know the AGE system but I had read that it was lighter than True20 :-/

I've read this book and while the rules are a bit different from the expected norm i'd have to say they are alot easier to get your head around than true20. Pretty much all the combat rules are covered over a couple of pages on chapter 1 and there are far less situational modifiers on any given task
Customer avatar
Diego B January 20, 2017 7:00 pm UTC
Any new "narrative" rules?

You mean like FATE style aspects? Not really.
Relationships I suppose could qualify as they can increase your stunt rating, and you have a few stats for thing like motivation, good motive and evil motive. It also has a dark side meter that only comes up when dark magic is involved.
NPCs use the same rules as players and the magic works the same both in and out of combat, nothing that can be done in story can't be done with the rules.
I recommend the review it goes into detail on the rules

This from the Green Ronin site:

Ten years ago we published Blue Rose, the roleplaying game of Romantic Fantasy. The idea was pretty simple. While Dungeons & Dragons and many subsequent fantasy RPGs drew inspiration from authors like J.R.R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, Michael Moorcock, and Fritz Leiber, a different sort of fantasy fiction began to develop in the 80s—what we call Romantic Fantasy—and there wasn’t a game built off its common themes and tropes. We thought there were a lot of fans who’d want an RPG inspired by writers like Tamora Pierce, Mercedes Lackey, and Jacqueline Carey. And we were right. The game was conceived and published as a three book series, with a core rulebook, a world book, and a rules companion. Blue Rose was quite successful and for many years people have asked us if we were ever going to revisit it.

The short answer is yes! Thanks to the generous support of our backers on Kickstarter, right now we are putting the finishing touches on a new edition...See more

Drivethru really needs to put a stop to these publishers putting up worthless crap and calling it previews. This isn't a preview, it's a glorified add blurb.
Won't even consider this for purchase until a decent preview is available

I completely agree. The previews these days seem to be little more than the table of contents and the obligatory "what is role playing" garbage. How about some pages from character generation?

Jesse, I totally get that. I would suggest you message the DTRPG team (contact us) button at the bottom of the page since I'm pretty sure they are the ones that load in the previews, and this one is lacking.

If you do think if anything I could maybe answer just ask :)

I appreciate the time you have taken to address my questions.
*I would like to begin by saying I am a fan of the AGE system and would like to know how the system has grown / changed with the addition of Blue Rose to the AGE family.
*I understand that the setting has also grown from the previous iteration. Please elaborate on the changes to the setting as well as your opinions of these changes.
*Over all what would be your assessment of the Blue Rose RPG? Is it worth getting at this time and at this price?

Again, thank you.

***I appreciate the time you have taken to address my questions.
You are very welcome! I hope this helps.

***I would like to begin by saying I am a fan of the AGE system and would like to know how the system has grown / changed with the addition of Blue Rose to the AGE family.

The Core System is still pretty much the same, 3d6 stunt points etc. The changes, there are new Races, especially the Rhydan, for those that knew the True20 Edition there are a lot more options for Rhydan and guidelines for making your own breeds. The Fantasy Age Classes have been replaced with Adept, Expert, and Warrior, these are close to the ones in Fantasy Age but with some tweaks. There is a new relationship mechanic, as well as some tweaks Focuses & Talents, but the biggest change is to magic. Known as Arcana in Blue Rose, it does not use magic points and is not broken into the 3 tier levels. The new Arcana system is more in line with the True 20 edition then it is to Fantasy Age. ...See more

I'm really interested in purchasing this but would like a better preview before I invest $25. Can you please provide more than the credits page?
Customer avatar
Wayne R January 16, 2017 12:48 pm UTC
I thought I'd look at the "Fullsize Preview" to get an idea of what this system might be like before committing $24.95 - due diligence and all that. The "Preview" is nothing but a nicely illustrated credit page, which provides no information about the game itself. If the publishers are reluctant to give me any idea of what the product contains (other than their generic sales pitch), then I wonder: Are they concerned that closer inspection of the product will not support the $24.95 price tag?

Thanks, but no thanks. There are dozens of systems and hundreds of games competing for my gaming money and time. When the first impression a publisher creates is that they are trying to sneak something by, I'm not disposed to give them a second look.

I don't know. Maybe they just didn't have a preview ready or uploaded the wrong file. I once set up a preview and only discovered a couple days later that you get my entire PDF via the preview. I think Green Ronin has been around long enough and provided over a decade of quality product to get my benefit of the doubt. No one is "trying to sneak something by".

I actually felt the same way about the Fullsize Preview and so I sent a message to DrivethruRPG about about the comments about the same issue. I just noticed they have updated the Fullsize Preview to not just be the table of contents.

Too Long; Didn't Read: Thye updated the Fullsize Preview page.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
