Conan: Rise of Monsters - Public Beta

Know, O prince, that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis and the gleaming cities, and the years of the rise of the Sons of Aryas, there was an Age undreamed of, when
a power-mad wizard set in motion a chain of events that would come to be called…the Rise of Monsters!

These are the Public Beta preview rules for Conan: Rise of Monsters, the upcoming miniatures skirmish wargame. This beta document includes the current version of all the rules, plus unit cards and sample Fate cards so that you can play the game right now.

I *LOVE* Howard's Hyborian Age, so as soon as I saw this for free, I had to check it out. I haven't had a chance to finish reading or to playtest yet, but I was skimming and marveling at how professionally you had put everything together / the lovingly rendered artwork, when I came to something that I have to point out immediately. All of your Stygians are too light-skinned. Howard's inclusion and treatment of "African" peoples (Stygians, Zembabwei, Kush, etc) is one of the most enduringly beloved aspects of his writing. I could tell by your quotes that makers are fans of the original stories, so I have HIGH hopes for this game. Don't mess it up by "white-washing" (intentionally or not) the Stygians. Keep it real.

"The people are typically tan skinned with black hair. Many of the common people are descendants of various races across the world, including men of Shem, the Black Kingdoms, and the Hyborian kingdoms. Taians from the northeast province are taller, more slender, and darker of skin than the average Stygian, wearing dyed kilts to show clan allegiance."

Stop it. Stygians can have any skin color you want.

As for the game, I'll test it soon. Looks good, although I'm not a fan of pre-painted minis.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
