Classic Fantasy Expert Set - TDM501

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Classic Fantasy Expert Set is an expansion containing a selection of high level spells for Ranks 4 and 5. Acting as a taster for the full high level expansion - Unearthed Companion - the Expert Set equips Classic Fantasy characters with a selection of Arcane and Divine spells so they can easily advance beyond Rank 3.

Also included are rules clarifications for the core game, and a detailed look at a new monster: the Mind Slayer, along with psychic powers for this devious abomination (which can be used by player characters too...)

The Classic Fantasy Expert Set is a must for every CF GM.

There are some mistakes in the Arcane spell tables in the back of the book--four 4th level spells appear on the 5th level list.

Under multi-class characters, it says Rangers cannot multi-class. Is this for humans only? Are half-elf Cleric/Rangers sill an option under the rules?

Thanks for catching the Rank 5 Arcane Table error. It appears the last 4 spells are a cut-n-paste error from the previous table.

With regards to Rangers multi-classing, I did not originally intend them to be able to, but I did not state as such in the original book. However, please don't let any arbitrary restrictions on class and race stop you from playing as you wish. The restrictions are included to honor the source material, which itself changed with every edition. Plus, like I mentioned in Classic Fantasy, my wife plays a half-elf berserker. That is NOT Allowed. But it's my game, and if I want to break a rule I'm going to. Well, if you spent money on it, its your game too. Enjoy. ;-)

Thanks for the quick response. I'm a long time D&D player, but new to the Runequest-style %100 system, so I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't a good reason for disallowing such that my limited understanding of the system prevented me from grasping.

That being said, I'm considering using CF to run my favorite setting, Mystara, the game world of the BECMI D&D rules. As you probably know, those rules had an elven racial class (a fighter/magic user who could cast in any armor), and later supplements added a skill system which allowed skills such as Tracking, Survival, etc. The Dawn of the Emperors box set introduced Foresters, humans who were raised among elves and trained in ranger skills. They used the elf class, meaning they could cast arcane spells from first level in any armor and had the above-mentioned wilderness skills.

So my question is how could I represent this in CF? I suppose I could give Rangers the arcane spell ability of bards and let them cast in any armor,...See more

It's a long story, but Classic Fantasy actually got its start as a hack of Mystara way back when I was playtesting Basic Role Playing.

However, why don't we bring this conversation over to my Classic Fantasy Yahoo Group? I have a great assortment of like-minded players there that do all sorts of conversions, and I'm sure someone, myself included, can answer all your conversion questions. Plus maybe we can post the results.

All of the stuff in this pdf will be included in the Unearthed Companion? One request for the latter when released: I would love to see a quick and easy way to play the game without hit locations. That is the only thing that doesn't seem to jive with an old school approach (IMHO).

Have you looked at how BRP/Magic World handles general Hit Points?

Hi Bill,

Yes, all this material will appear in the Unearthed Companion - and a whole lot more besides. However, we've no release date for the companion yet, and wanted to support CF this year.

Thank you for the suggestion on General Hit Points; it's definitely possible, although some mechanics would need to be rejigged, which isn't always as easy at it seems. Do take a look at M-Space, Frostbyte's SF game based on Mythras - that has optional general Hit Points which you should be able to port over quite easily.

Per Lawrence...
"The Unearthed Companion is being edited. Once editing completes, it will be over to art direction and layout. This is a big tome. It takes time. It will released in 2023, and will likely be our priority (and biggest) release of the year."

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
