The room flickers in front of you for an instant like a PMP losing reception. You hear the hammer snap back on a cheap poly and you can almost smell the ozone as the bullet glides out of the chamber. The window flies apart in shatterproof shards the size of disembodied limbs. Your neurochip feeds you the trajectory of the unequivocal sentence of death speeding your way as your eyes swivel in their machined sockets. Juice crashes through your veins. You've only got a split second to make a move. What do you do?

The Veil is a collaborative storytelling game Powered by the Apocalypse designed to tell cyberpunk stories of your own making. Use world building tools to come up with unique settings that look and feel like the cyberpunk you and your friends have always wanted. Put questions that drive your characters at the heart of heists, mysteries, and conspiracies. Break a near future world and then try to put it back together. Play to find out what happens.

The most recent version of the rules appear to not have their outline/table of contents not hotlinked properly. Hopefully this gets fixed soon?

Yup second this comment. Those bookmarks in recent update takes you to the front cover of the book only.

Not sure how the PDF got broken but we manually added the bookmarks back. Also updated the files for an upcoming second printing.

This game looks amazing, but it requires internet access because the print game doesn't include the necessary playsheets. If you bought this somewhere other than here (like a convention), contact Samjoko to download the files from DriveThruRPG.

Actually got a print copy of this at a local convention in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Extremely disappointed the Playbooks were microscopic on the pages and unable to be read. Returning the copy to store as I can't really play it. :(

Unfortunately way too late by now, I returned the copy as I was rather disappointed that it turned out that way.

Any Powered By the Apocalypse game will either have no char sheet/playbooks printed within the book, or isn't sized big enough to photocopy, but they usually have playbooks and reference sheets available as pdf downloads that are free. Every PbtA game I've purchased does this.

Nowhere did I find that on their website, which is incredibly sparse at best. Again, I returned the book and have no interest in pursuing the product no unfortunately.
Actually Apocalypse World 2E has the playbooks in the book that could easily be photocopied, and they have the pdfs online.

I've seen that a lot in Kickstarter productions. They want to get .pdfs in-hand to the backers as soon as possible, and when they print the book they match it to a certain format. For example, 3rd-party Fate Core games match their book size to the size of the original blue digest-sized Fate Core System rulebook. But once they fit the page to that size the actual font size is MICROSCOPIC! Some forethought on that is necessary, or even increasing the number of pages in the .pdf and making the font bigger (.pdf users won't mind as they can flip any number of pages easily).
Consider carefully the font outcome; my eyes are not as young as I think I am.

I'm really enjoying reading this game and can't wait to try it out. I had a problem with The Apparatus- Unlocking a State wasn't completely clear to me. I finally figured out that since Apparatus is a synthetic being, it starts with only one State and has to unlock the others, assigning numbers to the others as they are discovered by the Apparatus (at least I assume this is how it works). Apparatus intrigued me because this is the sort of character I played in TransHuman Space (GURPS). So I recreated my Bioroid and found character creation to actually run fairly smoothly and much more flexibly than with THS. Since my original character starts off with a thirst for knowledge, I had a little difficulty deciding which State to unlock. I researched the Wheel online and determined that Peaceful was the one I was looking for, since Curious is not on the Wheel in the rules text. Can you provide better guidance than this? I'm looking forward to trying this out with my gaming group.

Hi Michael, we've updated the files to the 1.0 version now so it may be more clear now. If you look on the playbook for the Apparatus it says under states that you should only start with one unlocked, I would go with whatever you think would be the most interesting.

There are many feeling wheels, I just went with a standard one. Since the core emotions are always subjective to the players and how they're feeling, what you role and what emotions are under the core ones are completely up to you! It's just a helpful tool, you can ultimately decide what emotions are under your core stats as based on your own character. I expect it'll change for many people as everyone interprets this stuff differently. For me, I'd have gone with peaceful as well for curious as thoughtful is in there, or powerful for intelligent.

It's always going to be pretty subjective as to where people think those emotions are going to be placed on the wheel though, so don't think of it as set in stone, just a guide...See more

Yep, that's great, Fraser. I am looking forward to playing a one-off on the 17th at our local group's Holiday Party. Chargen will be a peace of cake and we'll try out a simple objective-based scenario to keep it short. My group played Cyberpunk and TransHuman Space for over a decade, so it's nice to have a new perspective in this area.

Hey Kyle, yep! There is an off-set print run coming funded by the Kickstarter. It'll probably be fulfilled by IPR though since it's off-set. If people really really wanted a POD option I could ask Kyle about that.

Hi,
PoD would be awesome. So a "really, really" here!

It looks like we are going to be able to supply the offset print run through IPR as well as overseas, so I'm not sure we would need a POD option. Offset run will be way better quality and cheaper I'm sure. If you get an offset copy anywhere, it should also include the PDF with it as well. Is there any other reason people would want a POD?

I think having a POD option just lets you guys have another option and provides us another option because some of us might like to keep all our pdf's here on drivethrurpg. Although I am really just speaking for myself on this. Especially if it's premium hardback quality, then I'd pay extra for that.

Hm, I'll talk to Kyle about it and see. Hardback would be suuuuper expensive on here, I think. Because it's almost 400 pages and graphic novel size, but we can see. I'll dig into it!

Even if you do go to IPR, having the option to also have PoD here might not be a bad idea. It would provide more options to getting it.

We have two places to ship from, one the store page for samjoko publishing that will ship from Korea for cheap, and IPR for local US people, because yeah -- here in Canada we are aware of the postage costs for IPR. So with both options you could get the book shipped cheap to anywhere.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
