Lovecraftesque is the GMless storytelling game of brooding cosmic horror you’ve been waiting for. You tell the story of a lone Witness at the mercy of strange and terrifying events. The game helps you create a slow-building mystery, culminating in a climactic scene of horror.

- You create your own monsters and mystery that feel like something out of Lovecraft's notebook.
- All the players contribute clues to surprise and creep each other out.
- The rules ensure that the story flows seamlessly, as if an invisible GM were guiding it.
- There won't be any Mi-Go or Deep Ones—you'll get a completely fresh take on the genre.

This book includes everything you need to play, as well as scenarios and other material to inspire you.

LOVECRAFTESQUE IS A GAME FOR 2-5 PEOPLE AND TAKES 3-4 HOURS TO PLAY.

Note: "Multiple File Formats" includes PDF and ebook versions of the game.

Lovecraftesque has been nominated for the Golden Geek game of the year 2015, and was a finalist in the IGDN awards for best setting and best art 2016.

Lovecraftesque is mostly freeform in system, albeit constrained by a set of three rotating roles:
- The Narrator, who describes the world, plays NPCs and introduces the Clues that drive the game.
- The Witness, who says what the main character does and says their fears and rationalisations out loud.
- The Watcher(s), who add to the sense of atmosphere by elaborating on everything the Narrator describes.
The roles rotate at the end of every scene, so everyone gets to take a turn or more at each role. There's a system called "leaping to conclusions" which makes sure that, even though there isn't a GM to steer the story, the Clues follow a logical pattern rather than just being random ideas thrown into the pot. Basically after every scene you write down your theory as to what is really going on, and then use it to guide your contributions.

Although the game is freeform, it follows a structure - the first six scenes are investigation scenes in which one Clue is introduced...See more

By the way, if you want to get an idea of how the game plays, there's some video demos out there. There's a bunch linked to from the Black Armada website (link in the sidebar above), or google "lovecraftesque video demo" and there's one in the first few hits.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
