This rule system looks great from what i've read of the free preview, just had a quick question before I buy the book. I know the system is relatively new, but are there any pre-made character resources, or possibly settings / missions? My group doesn't have time to meet often so for the game we play now we heavily use pre-made characters and single session missions and this works great for us. Thanks for any information on this subject.

Hi Brandon, thank you for your interest in M-SPACE! There is a new scenario called REFLUX to be released in a few weeks (late March or early April). It presents The Weaver setting, a 'mythic sci-fi' universe inspired by classic science fiction. In addition to the scenario, several worlds, major forces and alien species are detailed. Plus a couple of potential patrons and recurring villains. Pre-generated characters will also be made available from our website at the time of the release. More titles are planned for later this year, so stay tuned. I'm also hoping to add shorter missions as free downloads, but unfortunately I can't give you an ETA on those yet.

How "crunchy" are the rules for spaceships? Is there any support to design vehicles like tanks and mecha? I'd like to design a campaign based on the Battletech universe, but without the tons of details the latter requires, so I'd like simple mechanical designs, simple tactical/strategical combat etc.
Thanks!
Antonio

Hi Antonio, tanks should not be a problem. The vehicle system is very similar to the starship creation rules, where you add the modules you need and do a couple of simple calculations at the end of the process. You can download a starship design walkthrough from our webpage, to get an idea if the crunchiness will fit your needs (www.frostbytebooks.com).

Regarding mecha, I can't really say. I'm not much of a mecha person myself. If you are fine with tweaking the vehicle system slightly, it will probably work. For a more specialized approach, you can try Alephtar Games' BRP Mecha. It's unfortunately out of print, but they may be planning a new version now that Revolution d100 is out.

Thanks Clarence! I hadn't looked at the website, that's very helpful. I see you include "Walker" as movement type for vehicles; that should cover my need for mecha (I am not after the Super Robot types, but more "realistic" stuff like Battletech and Mobile Suit Gundam.) I know about Alephtar Games' Mecha, and didn't like it; way too complex. In general, I don't like systems where hit locations are a factor, as I find they take too much space and time at the gaming table.
Thanks again, I think I'll buy the game! I have been looking for a simple science fiction RPG for a long time.

People don't like squares - haven't you heard of the golden ratio? :D
My own preference is either your typical 8.5x11 or 9x12 portrait if available as a hardback book, or something roughly 6x9 / digest sized for reading on a tablet.

Hi Emiliano. Yes, there is a bundle of sorts: if you buy the printed version, you get the PDF for free. Just send me an email with a copy of your Lulu receipt, and I will return a download link within a few hours. My email is: clarence.redd@gmail.com. And thank you for your interest in M-SPACE! I hope you'll enjoy it.

Firstly I really like the look of this game. It will get its first test run on the 18th. Already my players are happier with this than Eclipse Phase, which was felt far too complicated.

I also like the fact this is using attributes found in games like Call of Cthulhu as I’m planning on running a Sci-Fi horror game and the POW stat lets me introduce Sanity rules.

Couple of quick questions on skills in character generation

The professional skills that aren’t selected do they default to 0 as they require training ?

When selecting professional skills do you add the base chance attributes to the point spent on that skill ? Or is it purely the skill point spent?

I'm happy you like it! And yes, you have interpreted the rules correctly. All professional skills are at zero until you put some points in them. Then they start at Stat+Stat, and add the skill points on top of that.

Sci-fi horror sounds great. Let me know how it develops. You also might want to take a look at the sanity rules in Luther Arkwright.

Is there any chance we will see this otherwise great book in some other paper format (e.g. A4)? Currently printing/reading it on a tablet is a bit painful.

Hmm, that's strange. I use it all the time on my iPad without any problems. What is it you find painful?

I'm not a tablet user myself, but that's the feedback I got from a fellow player. Apparently her budget device goes bonkers when she tries to read any kind of "unusual" format so I guess this is a non issue after all :D. Personally I'm more interested in printing the book since I like to have a physical copy. No pressure though, I was just wondering whether I should hold off because there might be a more suitable format on the horizon.

Ok, I will see if I can load the PDF on another device and try to replicate the problem. Regarding printing, you will end up with lots of white space (at the bottom, or top+bottom, depending on how your printer is set up), but otherwise regular A4 should work just fine. My early test prints were made like that, though you may want to cut them down to square size at a local print shop. Would that work for you?

Oh yes, of course. That's actually the solution I was considering, just wanted to make sure before I started printying. As for the PDF, unless you have a battered, quirky no name tablet at your disposal I don't think it's really worth your time (in retrospect I probably should have considering the state of that device before mentioning any problems, so yeah, sorry for that).
Thanks for swift reply.

I bought this in hardcopy from the publisher. It's a fantastic book and exactly the bridge I needed between good sci-fi and BRP/D100 systems.

Hey Joshua. Yes, a hard sci-fi scenario by Pete Nash (The Design Mechanism) is in layout and will be released soon, with stats for both M-SPACE and Luther Arkwright. I'm also working on a scenario in a setting called The Weaver, and I hope to finish it soonish.

On page 88, what does it mean "1 module per crew member. 4 modules for a cubicle."?
Customer avatar
Clarence R September 27, 2016 8:53 am UTC
PUBLISHER
Hi Jacob, it's simply a way to differentiate between a ship with just a seat or similar for a crew member/passenger (like a small shuttle or fighter), and ships capable to house people for a longer period of time (with small compartments or luxury staterooms). You may want to check out the forums on BRP Central (basicroleplaying.com) or at The Design Mechanism (http://designmechanism.freeforums.org) if you have more questions. Both me and others playing M-SPACE hang out there.

Dear Publisher,

please check your cover-copy for this item. In the main list, it seems... kinda large. In the article view, it looks distorted. Might just be me, but might as well be an error with the image.

Sincerely
Kai

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
