Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting

Welcome to the Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting, a swords-and-sorcery milieu based on a Dark Ages fantasy version of the Mediterranean and the lands surrounding it! It is set a century after a Great Cataclysm destroyed the old world, plunged it into chaos, and reawakened magic and all form of ancient races and monsters. Now, the agents of Gods and Titans struggle against each other on behalf of their masters, nations strive to survive or dominate one another, and adventurers descend into the ruins in search of wealth and lost technology.

This universal campaign setting is ideal for adventures of the sorts inspired by the works of Fritz Leiber, Robert E. Howard, and Jack Vance. It has deliberately been designed to be system free and compatible with any set of role-playing game rules suitable for ancient, medieval, or fantasy venues. It is the "Bible" of its world and its contents can be used either as part of a cohesive milieu or individually to enhance other campaign settings or adventures, and both by game designers and writers interested in authoring fantasy fiction.

This book includes:

* MAPS of Kos City, Kos Island, the Aegean, and the Mediterranean.

* WORLD OF KOS, overview of the world, the impact upon it of the Great Cataclysm, and a timeline; sections on Languages, Clothing, Wealth & Money, Entertainment, Military Organizations, and Adventurer Culture.

* KOS CITY, an overview of the community that will be the starting point for many adventures and 50 specific places adventurers might visit in it, to include taverns, training halls, and temples (and which was designed to parallel the general sorts of places described in Skirmisher's Adamantine-bestselling City Builder: A Guide to Designing Communities).

* KOS ISLAND, detailed descriptions of the island of Kos, what lies around it, its 12 major towns and villages, and 10 specific places located on the island or smaller islets in the waters surrounding it.

* LANDS BEYOND KOS, detailed descriptions of 16 different nations, brief entries on nine regions, and writeups on three specific places.

* ENCOUNTERS, 21 encounter tables — 14 nation-based and seven terrain-based — that storytellers can use for inspiration or to determine what things characters might encounter in the course of their adventures.

* LIVES, 118 system-free biographies of personages who live on the island of Kos or the lands surrounding it and are mentioned or appear as characters in the related sourcebooks or stories about the campaign setting.

* RACES, 17 species of people native to the world of Kos, including Antaeans, Arachneans, Bull Centaurs, Cynocephalians, and Myrmidons (along with more familiar Humans, Centaurs, Dwarves, Elves, Gnolls, Gnomes, Goblinoids, Half-Elves, Halflings, Lizardfolk, Merfolk, and Orcs).

* MONSTERS, a section on creatures that dwell in the world of Kos and their places in it.

* DEITIES & RELIGION, a section on gods and godesses, their worship, and the ongoing war between the Olympian Gods and the primordial Titans.

* GLOSSARY of terms useful for storytellers and gamemasters using this book.

~ TSRPG (Travel-Sized RPG) ~

Be sure to check out Skirmisher Publishing's popular and Platinum-bestselling TSRPG (Travel-Sized RPG)! This rules-light storytelling game can easily be played anywhere, from the airport waiting area you are stuck in, to the overnight in some hotel where there is nothing to do (and also, of course, in your own home). All the basic rules fit on one page; no dice are needed; characters have just two stats; and any bookkeeping that might be required can be done on a cocktail napkin with a pen borrowed from a waiter. TSRPG is fully supported with sourcebooks that include "Arms, Armor & More," "Wands, Wagons, Whips & More," and "OS-TSRPG," along with 10 compelling scenarios, "A Long Way to the Top," "Beating Around the Bush," "A Midsummer Night's Scheme," "On the Plane of Magma," "A Violet Shade of Death," "A Rose for Erato," "Into the Terrorium," "Whiskey in the Jar," "Krampusnacht: Night of the Krampus!," and "Temple of the Banished Suns," all of which include pregenerated characters and the basic rules for the game, allowing them to function as quick-starts for it. We have also had TSRPG translated into a number of other languages, including German (along with three adventures, „Eine Rose für Erato,“ „Auf der Ebene des Magmas,“ and „Tempel der Verbannten Sonnen,“ along with the „OS-TSRPG" supplement), Spanish (along with four adventures, "Una Rosa Para Erato," "Un Tono Violeta de Muerte," ""¡El Plan de Una Noche de Verano"," and "En el Plano de Magma" and the "Armas, Armaduras y Más" and "Varitas, Vagones, Látigos y Más!" supplements), and Ukrainian

I can see that the file has been reduced from what appears to be the previous 400MB file size, but at 136MB its still too big. I have lag moving from page to page on my gaming laptop! Any chances of being able to reduce it any more?

If we purchase a hard copy of this book through Amazon, is it possible to get a complimentary PDF here?

Any chance that we could get an reduced file size version of the book? At ~400MB, it's so big that it crashes any app I try to open it with and has crashed Acrobat on two separate computers when I tried to optimize it.

File is massive at 367MB. Difficult to open in any PDF reader other than Adobe.

Thank you for not watermarking it; I was able to use my own copy of Adobe Acrobat Pro DC (ver 18.009.20050) and its automated optimizer to reduce the file for screen viewing.

Thanks for great product!

I'd like to add that the settings PDF Architect 4 used to create this PDF file are really off. You may want to rebuild this document. Others may have more serious issues viewing the document--particularly using basic/free pdf viewers.

Patrick, we have actually had it available in print, in both black-and-white and color versions, at Amazon.com for awhile! That is where we order our own print copies, so those editions of our books always get set up there first and follow here at some indefinite point thereafter. You can find both versions by following these URLs:

Is this a bronze age setting? I have no doubts about the quality (I have and love the Wisdom From the Wastelands series), but I don't actually need another (semi-)traditional setting.

I'm looking for something closer to ancient Greece.

Thanks, Brian! Very glad to hear that you are enjoying the Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting.

There are minor improvements throughout the consolidated PDF and a few new pieces of supplemental content (e.g., the Glossary). And yes, you should be able to get a substantial discount on it by buying the bundle that it is included in, as DriveThruRPG and its affiliated sites will take into consideration the fact you have already bought some of the included titles. We specifically set up this bundle, in fact, so that people who bought the individual volumes would be able to get the consolidated book for a reduced price. You can check out the bundle on this site at http://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/205835/Swords-of-Kos-Fantasy-Campaign-Setting-BUNDLE

Yes, we will eventually have the print edition of the book available here! In the meantime, both black-and-white and full color versions of it are available through Amazon.

Sammy, we have checked all of the files associated with the "Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting" in this bundle and none of them appear to be damaged! Are you still having this problem? If so, our guess is that you are probably using an older PDF reader, which you can replace easily and for free by downloading a newer version from Adobe. Please let us know how it goes and, if needs be, we will continue to help you get it sorted out, because this is a great campaign setting and we want you to be able to enjoy it.

Thomas, Randal, there is a 100% chance we will be offering a print edition of this book and are working on that right now! We are shooting to release it at the ConClave science fiction convention being held October 7-9 in Detroit and it will thereafter be available on this and a couple of other online retail sites. At that point anyone who has purchased a PDF copy of it here should only have to pay the cost of printing to obtain a hard copy of it.

How 5e compatible is this?

Curt, the Swords of Kos Fantasy Campaign Setting is very 5E compatible! It has been used to one extent or another as a setting for all the previous D&D editions and is the official development milieu for Skirmisher Publishing, which is developing RPG materials primarily for the 5th Edition system. Among other things, we currently have in the works several sets of monster stats and are finalizing two "Titan Cycle" adventures, all for 5E and located in or compatible with this setting, and our "Men & Monsters of Ethiopia" sourcebook for 5th Edition is similarly compatible.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
