A giant robot is smashing down Main Street. Your best friend tried to kiss you. Your mom thinks your grades need work. Your mentor thinks your team is bringing you down. Oh, and your costume is ripped.

Just another day in Halcyon City...

Masks: A New Generation is a superhero roleplaying game in which a team of young heroes fights villains, saves lives, and tried to figure out who they are—noble paragons? Dark avengers? Or regular kids? All against the backdrop of Halcyon City, the greatest city in the world.

In this book, you get:

  • Ten playbooks for young superheroes, so you can create your own awesome characters
  • Rules for superheroic action, interpersonal drama, and changing identity
  • Detailed instructions for running the game, building villains, and playing to find out what happens
  • Tools for creating your own custom material for Masks

Masks makes use of the same rules-light engine as Apocalypse World, Monsterhearts, Dungeon World, Urban Shadows, and Epyllion to create stories about young superheroes in the vein of Young JusticeYoung Avengers, and Teen Titans.

So what're you waiting for, hero? Time to get to work.

Will the extra Playbooks be exclusive to those who funded the campaign, or available for everyone to Purchase later? The harbinger sounds really interesting.

Any chance of getting printer friendly character playbooks? They look great, but I'll use half an ink cartridge printing these guys out.

Well, thanks!
Hey, I see you are from germany. Is there a minimal possibility that this game would be translated to german?

I missed out on the Kickstarter for this, but I was more than happy to purchase this when it came out. Definitely worth every penny. Keep up the good work!

I am really interested in this game. I have played (and really enjoyed) Worlds in Peril. Has anyone played both games, and if so can you say how they compare?

I am in the same situation as you. From what I've read secondhand online, the two games have a different superhero focus. Worlds in Peril offers a classic look at superheroes while Masks zooms in more narrowly on teenaged superheroes. The strength of Worlds in Peril seems to be how well it handles powers as well as the fallout being a superhero has on one's bonds with society and people. The strength of Masks seems to be how it handles the adolescent struggle to explore and establish one's own identity in the midst of social pressures and frustrations. Worlds in Peril has been compared favorably with the now discontinued Marvel Heroic Roleplaying game rather than an Apocalypse World game. In comparison, Masks seems to be seen as a relatively more traditional Powered by the Apocalypse game.

All of the above is just based on reading several forums and reviews that discuss both games.

There's also another Powered by the Apocalypse superhero game under construction called Just Heroes that...See more

I have a question about some of the inspirations in particular I was wondering how beast boy would fit into the legacy playbook? I would consider him more the outsider or even transformed. Some even say the beacon but I don't see that.

Beast Boy its probably a Legacy because in the comics, he's been around in almost every iteration of the Teen Titans and the New Teen Titans and Young Justice, and he's got a Doom Patrol pedigree. He's got the experience, and he hasn't graduated up to any other big name team. So, even when the rest of the roster cycles and new people come in, its always Garfield hanging around as the lynchpin of the team. He's *the* Teen Titan, or whatever. He even had a storyline relatively recently about his unwillingness to move on, and making peace with *not* being a Titan anymore.

Animated Beast Boy may not be a Legacy, but classic comic book Beast Boy as a Legacy makes tons of sense.

Beast Boy is also a legacy of the Doom Patrol, which is what I think was the intent in him being chosen.

I checked out the kickstarter and saw you met a large amount of bonus playbooks and such. Are these additional pdf stretch goal unlocks included with this pdf download?

There are three supplements coming which contain the stretch goals. This book is already jam packed and couldn't contain any more than it does TBH

No sorry. The content is all on the KS page and I think they even said what was in each book on an update. For a softcover book like these, I would expect USD20. Maybe more if they are full colour.

Luke's got it right! The supplements will have those additional materials; this book is complete and finished on its own. Check out the Kickstarter page for some idea of the breakdown of the supplements, but they are generally separated by topic.

I didn't receive an email notification, either, but if you log in to your Backerkit account and review the details of your order, you should see a "Get Your Digital Downloads" section toward the top of the page.

How do I purchase and/or download the Hero Deck and Deck of Villainy? The book says to go to http://www.magpiegames.com/masks/ but that doesn't seem to have anything on the decks as of 9/15/2016.

Will the playbooks and move sheets be printed in the actual book? I prefer that they are so that the book is complete, just in case anything happens to the downloads.

@Luke - We had to make a tough choice with this book: cut multiple pages of material to make room for the playbooks/move sheets or host the playbooks/move sheets outside of the book. Ultimately, we figured that folks download them anyway, so we decided not to include them in the direct text.

Cool. I can't say I am a fan of that approach. I much prefer the book to self contained, even if parts of it are downloaded for table use.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
