If you know about The White Hack, The Red Hack, and The Black Hack, you know where this is headed. BLUEHACK™ is a traditional tabletop role-playing game, played with paper, pencils and dice – it uses the Holmes Basic edition of that Original 1970s Fantasy Roleplaying Game as an inspiration, but it aims to create a distinct, streamlined flavour all of its own.

As with all hacks, this is a living document - if you have any ideas, requests, suggestions (or if you spot any errata!), please let me know!

Michael, I love this! Two questions.
1 - Why in the world did you use that odd illustration for the cover? Please fix! Ha ha!
2 - Any chance of a POD?
Thanks.

Thanks, James, I'm glad you like it! In answer to your questions:

1 - The troll's head on the cover is a reference to the J. Eric Holmes short story of the same name published in issue #31 of The Dragon, done in the style of the TBH severed hand.

2 - Coming in 2018 when I get some art. ;-)

Is there a Red hack? Based on the basic red set by Moldvay .

There was a Red Hack in development, but I'm not sure it ever made it into publication. I'm not sure whether anyone ever made a Moldvay Hack (which could be red based on the book cover, or magenta based on the box). However, there is a Basic Hack, which is based on the 1983 "Red Box" version of the world's most popular role-playing game.

Hi! This is one of my favorite hacks. I prefer the way you handled armor in this one. Would you consider adding other races? Or possibly some guidelines on using monsters as characters? I believe in the Holmes edition they mentioned monstrous PCs but offered no guidelines. Great little game as is though. :^)

Thanks, Jeremy, I'm glad you like it!

In fact, I am running a Kickstarter for the BLUEHOLME™ Journeymanne Rules at the moment, which covers levels 1-20. Journeymanne includes rules to let players create characters of any species (like dreenoi, for example), as well as rules for creating combination classes like "fighting mage" or "fighting clerical thief". You might want to check it out, because the prices are lower than they will be when Journeymanne is released to the public.

I will be looking into further material for BLUEHACK™ after the Kickstarter, too. :-)

After a first reading , I really like it; but I already had some questions; why some creatures have no hit dice (blank space) like the Manticora for ex.?
And how many HPs creatures have...there's nothing written about it and it makes impossible to start playing.

Michael: Thanks for doing a TBH product...a suggestion and also a typo found...1. Under Armour Points, I would suggest clarifying that section as to does every hit taken reduce the damage, or is it only the first hit in combat and requires a rest period like the original TBH?..it's not really clear as written.
2. Fighter page: You have Start HP as 1d10 +4 and Halfling 1d8+4, then under HP per level/Resting: 1d12 and 1d10...I believe the HP per level/Resting should be 1d10 and 1d8 instead.

Thanks for those comments. Yes, the fighter thing is a typo. Armour Points are a little different from TBH - lower values but no usage die, so the AP are subtracted from every attack. I'll see about clarifying that in version 1.2!

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
