VOYAGE INTO THE FAR FUTURE IN THIS VERSATILE TABLETOP GAME OF SCIENCE FICTION ADVENTURE

[Download a 23-page preview!]

Bounty hunters track down outlaws hiding in trader towns on worlds at the fringe of the galaxy. Starships explore unknown worlds, going where nobody has gone before. Great generational arks seek somewhere to call home. Detectives investigate a murder on a trail which will take them from Mars to Jupiter's moons. Agents infiltrate a criminal organization, going undercover to take down a galactic crime boss. A group of smugglers locates a new hyperdrive system to increase the speed of their freighter.

Play a brave starship captain, a reckless smuggler, a hardy marine, or a daredevil pilot. Are you a cunning bounty hunter, a clever engineer, or a charismatic trader? Over sixty science fiction careers await you!

FULLY COMPATIBLE WITH O.L.D. THE HEROIC FANTASY ROLEPLAYING GAME!

This roleplaying game allows you to create and run adventures in any sci-fi setting!

  • A range of alien species, and over 60 careers which allow you to generate any far-future character with a fun, intuitive life-path system.
  • A wide array of science fiction equipment, including weapons, armor, drugs, cybernetics, vehicles, and more. Wield anything from a laser sword to a sonic pistol; use a gravbelt or a handheld scanner; wear a kevlar vest or a powered suit of armor.
  • An array of optional psionic disciplines and powers, allowing you to play anything from a commercial telepath to a noble star knight.
  • Full rules for running the game, including fast but tactical combat, environments, and extended scientific, medical and engineering tasks.
  • Starship combat rules, both using detailed hex-based miniatures and abstract theatre of the mind.
  • Rules for creating ship crews from which to form specialized Away Teams for specific missions.
  • Astronomical information, space travel, and information on starship crews and operations.
  • Extensive guidelines for building a far-future game setting, with detailed rules for creating star systems, planets, civilizations, races, careers, monsters, and more, along with discussion on genre, theme, and technology.

Whether you're aboard a starship exploring new worlds, a bounty hunter tracking down outlaws on the fringes of civilisation, an agent infiltrating an intergalactic criminal organization, an intrepid hunter of exotic alien species, fighting a galactic civil war, or just a trader trying to make your way in an uncaring universe, N.E.W. has you covered!

This is a What's O.L.D. is N.E.W. core rulebook.

This hardcover book includes the existing WOIN rulebooks Future CareersFuture EquipmentFuture CoreSpace, and Building a Universe.

Also included separately are a PDF character sheet and a bonus EONS article entitled Resolve: Horror, Sanity, & Social Combat, providing an entirely optional rule straight from EONS, the official magazine of the WOIN roleplaying game system.

Here's what people have been saying:

  • "I was absolutely blown away! Not only is the system innovative and really well thought-out, but the presentation is very slick and professional."
  • "Sci-Fi games are hard to pull off, and even harder to do very well, and E.N. Publishing has set a new bar for content, dice mechanics, and playability."
  • "This is the best sci-fi toolbox system I've ever used. You can build a very wide range of universes, or multiverses, with N.E.W. A GM can choose what technology advancement level everyone has access to, choose where on the scale of hard/soft sci-fi the game will be, decide if psionics or cybernetics are present, and set the PC species and careers to make whatever they want. You can really make the game your own."
  • "I highly recommend this game for roleplayers. I have run the game frequently with a group and the system is efficient and allows for fast and exciting action scenes without being over complicated. It is this fast learning curve and versatility that captures the essence of a true science fiction roleplaying game."
  • "TLDR: Really awesome game! If you have the slightest interest in sci fi, pick it up and have a look!"
  • "I've played several RPGs and this one has my favorite character creation system. As you layer on the various options you get a real feel for the character and its history. I've never played a game that got me that involved and invested with a character even before play begins."
  • "This book is a fantastic read, and provides enough options and information to be useful in almost any sci-fi space setting. But better still, the material invokes a sense of nostalgia for so many space-based books, movies, and tv series. As a sci-fi buff, and a bit of a science geek, I loved reading through this for the detail, as well as the mood setting of it's examples of play."

Hey, I have a (very small) issue with the pdf. The artwork/pictures throughout the file seem to be of pretty low quality (low resolution files, I guess?). Even when completly zoomed out, so I can see the full page, I can see blurry spots and make out the pixels in the pictures. I do not have this problem with any other RPG pdf, not even with the one for O.L.D. which I bought together with this one...

Is there any chance of a Printer friendly version of the PDF. Something without the backgrounds / border art, and page numbers in a black font.

As I read it, you need to buy hardcover to get all the books bundled. Is that right?

I got my physical copy in the mail and I am impressed at how good the standard printing is. It's nearly as good as the premium printing. In a way I couldn't really tell the difference when I set this book down next to a premium color book I had already gotten from here. The color turned out extremely well.

The only thing is that the overall look and quality of the physical book itself is marred by someone dropping my book and it landing right on the bottom corner of the book, squishing the corners in and making it all wrinkly. It's apparent that somebody dropped the book after it got printed. Even my copy of the Starship Construction Manual I ordered along with this book is marred in the same way.

I asked DTRPG about what to do when a customer's book is damaged and they said this:

----
If you have any customers who are reporting the books damaged, have them contact Customer Service at: http://support.drivethrurpg.com/hc/en-us/requests/new

Customer Service will need to work with the customers in shipping replacement copies.
----

So that's the first step. If that doesn't resolve it quickly, please do let me know, though.

Write them, send pictures(if you haven't already) in your report. The customer support for printed material is fantastic. I've had a couple of books get damaged due to Lightning Source not packaging it enough, but the CSR's are understanding and work with you to replace your damaged one with a new one. Well worth it and one of the reasons I keep buying POD material from them.

Just a quick note, I recommend subscribing to ENP's 'EON' Digital Magazine for WOIN on patreon! There is additional content for their games added on a regular basis, i.e. Adventures, additional starships, new races, new android upgrades, etc.

Love the SciFi stuff Guys, keep it coming!!

There is a limited edition premium edition with a different cover, but it was promised as an exclusive to Kickstarter backers. We can't sell it, unfortunately. 12 copies exist, and that's all!

We may do another premium edition later down the line, but it's not currently planned. This is the only version for now. :)

Hi Russ,
I think he means an option to buy with DTRPGs premium paper instead of the standard heavyweight paper. The premium paper really makes the colors pop and the color art inside N.E.W. would look great.

Why do I keep getting update notifications for this title when there are no changes to the files? In the side column it currently says "File Last Updated: September 17, 2016", in my library it says "Last updated: 2016-09-17 06:28:02", but there is no info on changes made and the MD5 sum of the files that I download are exactly the same as those that I downloaded on the 10th of this month (the v1.1 update), ergo the files haven't been changed. Same thing happened on the 16th; update notifications when nothing was in fact updated...

The file has only been updated once (to v1.1). I have had some difficulty getting this site to show the full size preview, and re-uploaded it (the same file) a couple of times this week in an effort to persuade it - my best guess is that's what you're seeing.

Is there pre made adventures or encounters for this? As someone who works 70hours a week but likes to run the games, I find it difficult to build worlds and sessions from the ground up without a module to use as a base. Would really like to try this one though.

There's a (very short, 3-pages or so) one in the back of the book, and one longer adventure, Death on Ascalaon, available for free. The latter can be found at the official website, and her eon DTRPG and RPGnow.

http://www.rpgnow.com/product/184840/WOIN-Death-on-Ascalaon

http://www.dtrpg.com/product/184840/WOIN-Death-on-Ascalaon

There are more coming, of course, along with a setting called The Cauldron, and further resources in EONS magazine (again, you can find details about that on the official website).

Finally, it being an open content game, third parties can create and sell compatible products. I know of three adventures in production already.

I'm not too sure I understand the question. The skill list is open ended, so you have an infinite number at 0 and a handful at 1 or more. You only record the ones you have taken. :)

Russ can you provide rules if we want to break out of the whole success versus fail task resolution system? Some new games have wild card dice and other features that allow some positive effects from a so called failed roll, and vice versa. How can this be added to this game? It adds so much storytelling opportunity.
Customer avatar
Russ M September 12, 2016 10:59 am UTC
PUBLISHER
I think a fail-forward system is very GM-dependent. You could totally run it that way; it can be quite a divisive approach, though. The space travel rules operate in that manner (unless you actually want your adventure to be be about being lost in space), but you could choose to extend that to all skill tasks. LUC dice also allow players some limited ability to manipulate things; they fulfil some of the same role as a wild card die in something like SW, but aren't quite as potent. One of the approaches is that in an extended skill task, you're probably going to succeed eventually (unless it is literally beyond you - and even then LUC dice explode, so there's always a chance), but each roll takes time (minute, hour, day, etc.) so what you're really rolling is how long it takes you - which, of course, matters if you have a deadline, or a countdown pool running, etc.
Customer avatar
joshua O September 12, 2016 4:28 pm UTC
PURCHASER
That's cool. I love the countdown pool, seems like a great tension mechanic! I will look at space travel and see how to add. I was also thinking, as your game (and the music next door) kept me from sleeping, that simply adding a wild "GM's background noise" die that is a boon on a 6 and a bane on a 1 might do it -- as long as it did not unbalance the luck already present involved in both the dice pool and the PC's LUC attribute.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
