Old Friends

Old Friends is a freeform live-action ghost story by Jason Morningstar and Ole Peder Giæver designed for 4-6 players, with no GM. Playtime 3-4 hours.

Back in the ‘90’s you hunted ghosts together. You used an ancient technique that reliably bridged two worlds, and you put a lot of souls to rest. Like any team you were a mess of individual flaws, contradictions and rivalry, but it worked.

It worked until Sara died.

And now, here you are, 20 years later. The past has brought you back together. Together for that one last job.

Old Friends was nominated for 3 Otto’s at Fastaval 2016, in the following categories:

Best Presentation: “Not a single word is wasted in neither the tight scenario text nor the crisp cards. The game master is impressively equipped to introduce the players to the form and then put the scenario away and participate.”

Best Roles: “A character with complexity and everything at stake is created by using chance and minimal amounts of text. The players have ownership before the scenario even starts and are dealt a strong hand to get the ghost story under their skin.”

Best Effects: “Rituals, a mask and possession cards lets the participants create a harrowing experience, when the class room gets haunted and the ghosts ... compel the roles to reveal the truth about their past and darkest secrets.”

Fastaval players wrote:

“The Mask. A brilliant mechanic that let us create the illusion that there was an extra person (player or ghost) in the room.”

“I loved the idea of a condensed ‘nørdic’ game, by game designers I trust to deliver. (...) Character creation and the possession mechanic somehow make the impro work, which is impressive.”

“I was blown away the second time [I played], it was so intense. (...) [The players] were fearless.”

“As I read ‘ghosthunters’, I thought it would be a comedy. I was surprised how much emotion/drama there was.”

A very well-written game. The rules are brief and concise, containing everything you need to play. The only thing that prevents you from running this game in ten minutes from printing is that it takes a while to cut the cards. I've now run the game fiv [...]

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
