I wish I had known about the PDF option before purchasing the hardcover on Amazon. Not that it's not great to have a book but manually adding all the creatures to roll20 is a pain so is there any update on that roll20 compendium?

Also on page 49 the burrowling lists a burrow tactics being able to be used after 6 months with a party, but there is no burrow tactics ability listed only pack tactics and burrow awareness.

Anyone thinking of getting this book its a great, detailed well done product and I am already throwing a Skitterhaunt at my party this week.

Does this have all the Southlands creatures in it? Been waiting on a 5e Southlands bestiary and am wondering if this replaces it.

It does not have all the Southlands creatures, but it definitely has most of them (some were less useful for 5E). At a guess, about 50 monsters, so roughly 2/3 of the Southlands Bestiary creatures.

Recently bought this on Amazon in hardcover. It's great. There is a typo on the Clockwork Myrmidon (page 64) though, it says "A Clockwork myrmidon always moves with moves with a powerful, determined grace unusual in most clockwork creations".

Still a fantastic book well worth the price though.

My copy's images are solid black and I don't know what to do about restoring color, the reader I have doesn't have this issue with other products from DrivethuRPG.

Hey Lachlan, that's definitely odd. Which reader are you using? And does this problem happen when using any other reader?

Try downloading it again. I've had problems with a few pdf's here that disappeared after I downloaded them again.

I'm using the generic reader that came with my windows PC, called "reader" on the App Store. Opening the PDF on Edge has the same results.
... I just tried it on Chrome and it works on there, full colour, I am at a loss as to why that is the case.
I guess if nothing else I can just use chrome even though I would prefer the reader.

Are there any plans to sell this on Roll20 as a Compendium addon?

Yes, it is already available on Fantasy Grounds and on Hero Lab. It's taking longer to get it through at Roll20 but the plan is definitely to offer it there.

I was notified that this has been updated. It now shows 2 download files:

Kobold_Press_Tome_of_Beasts_V3.pdf and
Kobold_Press_Tome_of_Beasts_2P_FINAL.pdf

I don't know which is the more recent version, or why there are two versions, but Kobold_Press_Tome_of_Beasts_V3.pdf will not display properly. It's full of error messages when you try to read it. (Kobold_Press_Tome_of_Beasts_2P_FINAL.pdf works fine)

Thank you for reporting this! There's only one file showing on the publisher side, v3, so we've reported this to RPGNow support.

Thanks! V3 appears to be fixed. I just tried it again, and no error messages :)

BTW, it's not uncommon to see two versions of the same file, often with nothing to indicate which is the most recent. I've always wondered why publishers did that. I never imagined that publishers couldn't see it, too. So I learned something today.

Because the original print run is so difficult to find, will there ever be a possibility of there being a Pod option for us to buy on here?
Customer avatar
Stacie W May 12, 2017 7:32 am UTC
*Waves* Repeat question.

Any chance of a PoD option in the near future, or will it be getting a reprint?

Sorry, missed that Q the first time, appreciate you bumping it! The books are currently on press for a reprint and we expect to have them at the Kobold warehouse within 30 days. They are currently available for preorder there:

Would anyone be able to tell me how the beasts fit into a forgotten realms setting? I've seen some mixed reviews (regarding settings and fit) and didn't want to dump the cash given that that's where I like to stay :)

Well, it's a generic collection of monsters and not limited to a particular setting. Some of the creatures included first appeared in the Midgard Campaign Setting, but that's a relative handful. In cases where the Midgard ties are important, that information is limited to a sidebar.

So... These monsters will work in the Realms with pretty much zero modification.

I can't post a review since I kickstarted this, but I'll post my review here.

Disclosure: I don't know if this needs to be said, but I did kickstart this project, so there you have it.

So this review has been a long time coming. I have had this book for a long time, I have looked at a good number of the monsters in detail (though not all, it may take another few months to a year to do so). I think I have a pretty good handle on this book and its contents in a way that I can deliver a relatively in depth review, and hopefully I can tell you something you didn't already know.

What you likely do know is that this book is amazingly well done. It has many great monsters that are very well thought out and excellently written. It has a lot of baked in adventure ideas that can be based off of nearly any of the monsters within. It has art that is the envy of the 1st party publishers. It has enough monsters to keep your players entertained and challenged for many a campaign.

Anyone else having problems with the PDF file downloaded from DTRPG? I'm getting tons of error messages and cannot fully read the file.

Didn't purchase here but through kickstarter - totally solid resource, happy that there are quite a few for the CR7-12 range - where I find most of my compaigns getting to and slowing down a bit from lack of diversity.

GREAT ART

GREAT ACTIONS - a ton of these monsters in the higher CR range don't just have attack + spells, most have spell like effects through actions which makes them much harder to "resist" or have "immunity" through your party.

GREAT PURCHASE

Give them your cash! Not sad I did!!!!

At first I was surprised by the high price tag. But then I looked at the page count... over 400 pages. Hmmm... Let's add it to the wishlist and see...

I backed the PDF plus print book on Kickstarter and am exceedingly happy with the product. Its over 400 pages and has a very wide range of creatures and a diverse range of challenge ratings. The monsters are from their Midgard campaign setting but would fit in very well with most generic fantasy worlds.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
