Is there ever going to be a version available that is integrated into Roll20? PDFs are well and good, but building a somewhat complex statblock by hand takes a lot of time and it would be hugely appreciated if I could skip that step as a DM.

I am ok with the book being revised, but one of the concerns I have with it is that Kobold Press removed some of creatures that are Midgard Lore specific from it. They didn't even mentioned it in the description, and you only could see it in a blog post they added in their site. I started running Empire of the Ghouls in Midgard and have been liking it a lot, but I'm wondering if Kobold Press is starting to move away from their world setting.

What is the difference between the Tome of Beasts (2016) and this Tome of Beasts (2023)?

Thank you for your response marissa W. The "full errata" and "streamlined mechanics" should be updates to the "older" version. 11 all-new creatures, expanded tables, new monster art, and "much more!" is not enough for $29.99. I used to highly respect Kobold Press, but after this they have lost some respect. This just seems like a play for greed on finances.

Yes indeed the errata is available for free.

The store description is wildly underselling the work on the updates. LOTS more information is on the Kobold Press blog about the further development of existing creatures, the honing of new abilities, and how this came together over a 6-month dev cycle.

Check this point-by-point out for better details: https://koboldpress.com/tome-of-beasts-1-revisited/

Are there any plans to give volumes 2 and 3, or the Creature Codex similar updates?

It frankly depends on whether the first remastered edition does well; it was a lot of work, and if people like the updates we'll do it again.

In that case, it would be reasonable to expect an updated Creature Codex in 2024 or 2025.

Hi Wolfgang! I was hoping you could elaborate on whether there were any "re-balancing" changes to stat blocks in the way of adjusting ability scores, AC, HP, damage, etc. or if it was more just clarifying whether things were actions, streamlining spells, etc. Thanks for jumping in here to ask questions!

@Wolfgang I looked at the site you linked above (sorry it took so long), and read the differences. My apologies for misunderstanding Kobold Press' work. I am unable to purchase the product at this time, but I do look forward to when I am able to purchase and read through it. Thanks for all the quality work you and your company has done.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
