The Daring Comics Spotlight series focuses on powers, rules hacks, and character archetype concepts for the Daring Comics Role-Playing Game. Each spotlight issue is a small, easy to use PDF dedicated to a specific concept.

In Daring Comics Spotlight #1: Teleportation, we take a look at different ways the teleportation power can be used in your series, and provide you with guidelines and examples for duplicating a popular power usage from comic books: the teleport attack.

Thanks for the honest explanation, didn't know their was "overhead" in pdf too. I see now there's not much "room to maneuver" at those low price points.
Hope that doesn't discourage you from continuing to support the game the way you do ;)

Well, keep in mind that it varies from publisher to publisher. Some guys can do their own writing and their own layout, for example. In my case, I’m really just an author. I never learned Indesign and other programs, so for all my layout needs I have to hire freelancers to do that. I haven’t the first clue how to do it myself.

So even basic layout needs, like typesetting my fiction, it goes to someone else. For RPGs, it all goes to someone else for artwork and layout.

So for guys like me, all the artwork, cover art, graphic design, editing is all overhead. The only overhead I don’t have in a PDF in relation to a physical book is any printing, which I handle via POD anyway.

So for the Spotlights, the real overhead is the layout.

Not to worry, though, I expected the Spotlights to be small sales. I didn't really expect to make enough to pay myself even a low-low end for the writing. And there’s no danger of me not supporting the RPG.

The reviewer voices a valid concern on the Spotlight series price point, so let me address it publicly.

It comes down to economics. The Little Tin God adventure was funded via the Kickstarter, so that overhead was paid by the backers. That gave me more room to maneuver on MSRP.

For the Spotlights, though small, they’re funded by us. The lowest I could have gone was $1.00, unless I did Pay What You Want, or free.

Spotlight #1, counting just the actual text (not the license, credits page, or stat blocks at the end) was roughly 3,500 words. Layout was around $30. Assuming a very, very low-rate per-word pay of $.02, that’s still $70 for a total of $100.

At $1 per copy our take is $.70.

At $1.50 a copy, our take is $1.05

So, with a $1 MSRP we’d need to sell around 43 copies just to break even on layout cost. At $1.50 MSRP that’s roughly 28 copies.

Keep in mind, we have not yet sold 28 copies of the spotlight, even a...See more

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
