The Drac Hack

ADD TO WISHLIST >

The Drac Hack - a creature list for THE BLACK HACK.

This changes *everything*.

That's what I said after reading David Black's wonderfully elegant oldschool RPG system, The Black Hack. All those old modules could be dusted off and shared with players of all levels of RPG experience, requiring very little prep from the GM, and very little work for the players. The first book to get the dust-off for me was the I6 vampire classic that shall-not-be-named (for copyright reasons). Presented here are my lists for the old adventure, for use with The Black Hack.

What this is:
The Drac Hack is a complete list of monsters and NPCs for the original adventure module, and from the new Death House module, with Black Hack-appropriate Hit Dice, Average Hit Points, and number of attack stats.

What this is not:
A complete stat block for every creature.  I've already had to tiptoe around angering the copyright gods, and I want to remain in their good graces.  All the additional info you'll need is in the adventure module.  I haven't actually even referred to the original stat blocks in my own sessions.  I've found that with this barebones info, I can decide how most of the creatures will attack, based on the strength of the party and the flow of the game.  I expect I'll need to look it up for the named creatures, but aside from that, I find it better, and more in the spirit of The Black Hack to determine, on the fly, that *this* particular wolf will get 2 attacks, and that its claw will do 1d6 damage and its bite will do 1d8, and so on.

These creatures are based on either Hit Dice or Hit Point data, or some compromise of the two, to try and retain the proper challenge for the players. Average Hit Point data is based on the standard average calculation for The Black Hack's only creature Hit Die - the d8, and is meant to allow you, the GM, to quickly determine an HP value, without the need to roll for each creature. Thankfully, The Black Hack allows challenge-level discrepancies to be trivially adjusted on the fly by adding Hit Dice, Hit Points, or by using the advantage/disadvantage mechanic. Expect to make some adjustments, and embrace the idea of that, since a big part of The Black Hack's beauty lies in the agency it gives you to mold the entire system to your players and their characters.

This crappily laid out and cobbled-together digest assumes that you have both the original adventure module (or one of the many remakes), and the Black Hack book. All the necessary attack and rules data can be found therein. Both can be found online at the One Book Shelf websites. If you don't have either of these, do yourself a favor and grab them - you won't regret it. For the vampire classic, I would recommend the either original, or the new 5th edition version (which is only available in print at this time).

I am currently busy compiling creatures for the 5th edition book and hope to add them soon.

Also, have a look at our Monster Mod Cards.  They're fun, I promise!  :)

I've found a formatting error, where some creatures are listed twice. That will be addressed as soon as I'm able to make the edits.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.

Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
