In the canyon of Thunder Rift, in the village of Kleine, goblins have always been a nuisance, but the natives have dealt with them and continued an otherwise peaceful existence. Now, a valuable magical item, called the scepter of truth, has disappeared! The ingenuity of the crime bears the mark of the goblins' leader, the Master Thief Raven. The scepter must be recovered, but there is no one in Kleine with the strength and courage to penetrate Raven's trap-laden hide-out, deep in goblin territory. A party of stout adventurers might survive the mission, but they will have to be quick, smart, and especially careful.

This module has been created especially for the inexperienced Dungeon Master and players who are interested in the exploration of dungeons and ruins.

  • Recommended for four to six character, levels 2-3
  • A large map sheet and stand-up figures are provided
  • Only the Dungeons & Dragons Game Box is needed to play this adventure
  • Can be used in conjunction with several other adventures and accessories based in Thunder Rift, or it can stand alone.
  • Features easy-to-follow rules for smother role-playing

Product History

"Assault on Raven's Ruin" (1992), by Tim Beach, is the second Thunder Rift adventure. It was published in April 1992.

Origins: Simple Adventures. The release of the The New Easy-to-Master Dungeons & Dragons Game (1991) called for a line of simple, low-level D&D adventures, the first of which was "Quest for the Silver Sword" (1992). "Assault on Raven's Ruin" continued the line with a new twist: it was the first adventure that was explicitly set in the realm of Thunder Rift.

Graphic Tropes. Like its predecessor, "Raven's Ruin" continues a more graphical presentation of the D&D line. The GM gets a nice black & white map of the dungeon with descriptions of every room, while the players gets a poster map of the area that doubles as a battle map.

Adventure Tropes. In keeping with the idea of simple adventures, "Assault on Raven's Ruin" is another dungeon crawl. Players explore ruins to kill goblins and recover a MacGuffin, the Scepter of Truth. The adventure is framed as a mission for a nearby town and ends with a negotiation with a high-level thief, giving players the opportunity to do a little more than just explore and fight.

Exploring Thunder Rift. "Assault on Raven's Ruin" is set near the town of Kleine in what's called "the area of Thunder Rift". The adventure contains very little detail on the Rift itself, though various descriptions in the book make it obvious that it's a hilly wilderness realm since it includes "the Burning Hills", steam vents, and geysers. However, you have to read the back cover to learn that Thunder Rift is a canyon!

A month later "Thunder Rift" (1992) would more fully detail the area and also reveal that the village of Torlynn from "Quest for the Silver Sword" lies in the Rift.

About the Creators. Beach did most of his D&D writing from 1991-1995. Although he got his start with Maztica supplements (1991+), he was now writing for a variety of settings, including both Dragonlance and the Forgotten Realms.

It's downloading now. 2 files, 2nd is a zip containing the map sheet. Stand up figures are not included, but scan appears to be complete otherwise.

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
