The Sprawl: Mission-based cyberpunk, powered by the Apocalypse

Glide through the most secure corporate computer networks. Crack the ICE that stands between you and that big score.

Drop your cyberlinked autoshotgun to the floor empty. Flick chrome blades from your fingers. Dive into the midst of that corporate response team to secure your team’s exit.

Turn up your synth-leather jacket against the rain. Watch the back-alley entrance of the club for your target. Tail the armoured limo through the neon-bathed streets.

Cut power to the alarms. Drop over the wall into the compound. Slip past the auto-sentries. Locate and secure the prototype. Escape under the eyes of the rotor-drones.

Whatever your story, you are the extended assets of vast multinational corporations, operating in the criminal underground, and performing the tasks that those multinationals can’t do... or can’t be seen to do. You are deniable, professional and disposable.

The Sprawl is a game of mission-based action in a gritty neon-and-chrome Cyberpunk future for an MC and 2-4 players.

  • Create your own Sprawl at the nexus of bleeding-edge technology and fragile humanity
  • Play hardbitten professionals caught between ruthless corporate interests
  • Win sometimes, lose sometimes and be double-crossed a lot

There are a thousand stories in The Sprawl. What's yours?

I'm absolutely in love with this game. It's so amazing! I bought the hardcover, PDF, and some super special, stainless steel dice to use for when I play this game

Are there currently any plans, or at least brainstorms for more content? It seems like a pretty complete project that can definitely capture Cyberpunk in its entirety. But goddam I just want nothing but this game in my life. <3

Thanks Brett!

There are a few more things in the works arising out of kickstarter stretch goals: a set of 1000-4000 word settings, a set of missions (of a similar format and length to The Kurosawa Extraction in the book), Necropolis (a detailed cyber-gothic setting complete with some new moves and playbooks), and Touched (a detailed cyber-magic setting complete with new moves and playbooks). The first three and in a quite advanced stage and the last is still in playtesting. No dates on any of them, mostly because I'm busy with my day job at the moment, but they're all ticking along. I hope to have updates on my blog, ardens dot org, over the next few weeks.

Still reading through it. So far it looks really nice! :)

There ARE a couple of layout glitches I found so far. Is there an official board/forum to get in touch and help improve these?

Also: Please add bookmarks! :)

Which version are you reading? Both the Noon and Midnight versions should have bookmarks. The B&W version is really just intended for home printing so doesn't have them.

The closest thing to an official forum is The Sprawl's community on Google+, but for reporting errors or glitches, its best to just email me directly: hamish at ardens dot org (or use the "email publisher" link above.

Ah yes, I stand corrected regarding the bookmarks. Sorry for that.

I will send you an email about the layout stuff.

Thanks and keep up the good work! :)

The book says The Killer picks 2 cybernetic options, but the playbook sheet says 1... I'm assuming the book is right since it says v1.1 and the playbooks are 1.0, but could somebody confirm that?

The book is correct. As soon as I get InDesign working on my computer I need to change that on the character sheets.

The playbooks can be downloaded from the downloads section of the Ardens website (link labeled as "Publisher Homepage" on the right hand sidebar).

Unfortunately, the website is down right now, but if it's still down when you see this, email me at the Contact Publisher link (also on the right hand sidebar) and I'll send you the files.

Excellent work.
I've already bought the PDF a couple of months ago.
But I would like to give some of my precious bookshelf space to a hardcover copy of The Sprawl.
Is there a possibility to upgrade my purchase to a PDF + Hardcover version?

I sent out an email about that last week to everyone who had bought the PDF. If you have publisher emails turned off you would have missed it though. Send me an email at the "contact publisher" link above.

I bought the PDF + Hardcover book. I just want to say well done with this release, the layout and general 'feel' of The Sprawl is spot on for the genre. I have only flicked through the PDF as I want to wait until I have the actual book in my hands before I really absorb it all. The game system is totally new to me so it's going to take me a while to get my head around it, but I'm looking forward to diving into it when the book arrives. Once again, well done Hamish and the team. Excellent work.

I know this is kind of a weird question, but what programming language is being used to describe advancement on the playbooks? The part where it tells you how much XP you need to advance, in the form of an if-else statement.

NO WAI, VISIBLE "N33d moar XP"

Also, I'd like to know if there's any stealth characters, such as Splinter Cell or Hitman-style characters that could be emulated in this game? Or rules to make such characters?

I just read the blurb again. The game does seem to be oriented towards stealth action.

Craig R May 15, 2016 7:03 am UTC

This is an interesting paradigm shift for players. They'll ask, what do I roll for stealth? The answer is, to do it, you do it. In other words (and to use an example from a game I ran just a few days back), the player would define through the fiction that their character was using stealth to sneak up behind the security guard and Play Hardball. The move is Play Hardball, stealth is defined by the fiction the player presents. When they test the move, the results may indicate that the stealth didn't got to plan; perhaps the guard saw their reflection in the corporate office window. If the move goes well, then they were stealthy.
Customer avatar
Hamish C May 16, 2016 5:44 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
Hi Benjamin. Yes, you can definitely play stealth specialists. The main such playbook is the Infiltrator.

My assumption of the default playstyle is a team that tries to do things by stealth (at least partially) but that has the tools to continue if (when) things get loud.

As Craig suggests, the way stealth plays out is generally as an assumed consequence of success. Failure brings noise, attention, guards, gunfire, sucking chest wounds, expensive medical bills, cortex bombs, and so on.

I've got a question about how health and damage is handled in this game. I've bought other Apocalypse World games such as Spirit of '77 and Monster of the Week. So far I like how damage is done in Spirit of '77. But I'm looking for a bit more grittiness. I'm wondering how this game stacks up to other Apocalypse World games in that regard? And what does this game add to the Apocalypse World engine, overall? Sorry, but the preview doesn't really tell me much.

Customer avatar
Hamish C May 16, 2016 5:52 pm UTC
PUBLISHER
The Sprawl uses the same kind of Harm clock and Harm move as Apocalypse World, and the same damage scale for weapons. Since how gritty the game is depends somewhat on how the MC runs it, it's a tough question to answer, but it should be about the same range as AW. I hope that helps?

If you'd like to discuss this further, I recommend asking for opinions at the G+ community. You can find a link to that on the publisher website, above.

(It's been a couple of years since I ran MotW and I haven't played Spirit of '77 yet, so I don't feel like I can draw a useful comparison for you there.)

Scanned image
These products were created by scanning an original printed edition. Most older books are in scanned image format because original digital layout files never existed or were no longer available from the publisher.

For PDF download editions, each page has been run through Optical Character Recognition (OCR) software to attempt to decipher the printed text. The result of this OCR process is placed invisibly behind the picture of each scanned page, to allow for text searching. However, any text in a given book set on a graphical background or in handwritten fonts would most likely not be picked up by the OCR software, and is therefore not searchable. Also, a few larger books may be resampled to fit into the system, and may not have this searchable text background.

For printed books, we have performed high-resolution scans of an original hardcopy of the book. We essentially digitally re-master the book. Unfortunately, the resulting quality of these books is not as high. It's the problem of making a copy of a copy. The text is fine for reading, but illustration work starts to run dark, pixellating and/or losing shades of grey. Moiré patterns may develop in photos. We mark clearly which print titles come from scanned image books so that you can make an informed purchase decision about the quality of what you will receive.
Original electronic format
These ebooks were created from the original electronic layout files, and therefore are fully text searchable. Also, their file size tends to be smaller than scanned image books. Most newer books are in the original electronic format. Both download and print editions of such books should be high quality.
